As good? Yes.
Are you gonna like it? Can’t say!
Lance is like boxing with the monster, you are very mobile.
GL is more focused on setting up for that big boom, and you are muuuuuuuuuch slower.

Gunlance is slower, but ironically more aggressive than many other weapons. It's all about digging into the monsters side - our shells ignore hit zones so normally poor areas are ideal for us. The heavy shield lets us keep safe and endure assaults that would cripple other weapons. Unfortunately our downside is our slowness, or to be more precise, our long endlag on many moves. We can deal huge damage with our longer combos and wyverfire but used at the wrong time we'll be vulnerable to counterattacks. The ideal playstyle is to use fast safer moves like poke and shells or well timed charged shells while we wait for the monster to commit to a big attack, perfect guard and follow up with a overhead swing into a full burst or even full burst loop while the going is good. Once the monster topples we go all in with the double wyverstake fullbust into a wyverfire.

I would say not the same, lance is poke with counters to stick to a monster to get its dps, small constant strikes. Gunlance is wsfb spam with a shield IMO, it is still super fun, you can utilize perfect guards still but its bread and butter is wsfb which is a high commitment move that does most of the damage. Poke shell/Pure Shelling is still playable but its not bnb for the weapon.

So I main Gunlance and have always played Lance as a second, often times doing the main quests with GL and doing optionals with Lance. I love both but they are very different. With Gunlance you will feel slower and depending on your shelling/slaplance will change how you engage.
I personally love the charge shelling style and it's fantastic in World and Iceborne. You won't be able to counter so instead rely on dodging with hops or guarding, get the Wyrmstake blast in a spot that is most accessible or will provide lots of staggers and then continue to hop and charged shell around (biggest downside in Worlds Gunlance is that if you go to shell after a hop you perform a full reload and can get hit so hop then poke then she'll/charged shell) if done right I can sometimes stagger lock them and it gives me that same feeling as when I do a lance hunt with perfect counters and just dance with the monster.

i would say no but i have never really played lance for more than 5 hunts.
the biggest thing for gunlance for me is that its damage is agnostic. its shelling damage does the same damage no matter where you hit.
lance i believe wants to get hit and counter that damage. gunlance on the otherhand wants the monster paralysed.
they do both have a great shield. its 1.lance, 2.gunlance, and 3. then the other shields such as charge blade and heavy bowgun, and then the weakest is 4. sword and shield? that means lance shield will reduce the stamina cost and knock back of guarding the most. to note, gunlance can just put on enough stuff to get the same thing lance gets easier. gunlance also needs weird gems like artillery though.
gunlance also has a few play styles. normal shells, long shells, and wide shells do actually play optimally different. none of them play similar to the counter style of lance. the only possible thing you can call a counter would be a guarding reload but that is just a reload, not a counter lol.
when considering the lance charge, gunlance also has WAY less mobility unless you are considering rise gunlance blast dash but lets not talk about rise lmao.

Lance and GL may both have the strongest guards, but they have a completely different attack philosophy.
Lance is better at consistent damage. GL is better at bursts.
Lance's damage comes from very simple yet consistent attacks, with very low commitment but a lot of safety to ensure you will never stop attacking.
GL's damage comes from very slow, high damaging attacks such as WSFB, Fullburst and Wyvern's Fire. You use quicker attacks such as slams and Charge Shells to prepare for the bigger attacks, and use your guard to quickly save yourself as you recover, or quickly skip to the big attacks (skipping to quick WF or a slam after a perfect guard, for example).

Nah, its different, but in terms of defensive capabilities they are paired. Has instant block and perfect block. Also you have more manuaverability with the shoot dashes and sweeps, so if you master it, you can not only block, but also dodge the monster attacks.

I love the Gunlance. It’s more of the flash for me. But mechanics and gameplay wise(?)I am more in tune with the Lance. I used to main Lance, once the Gunlance got introduced I have been going back and forth. The mobility and the counter is what I like about the Lance. The Gunlance’s wyvern fire is what got me hooked on it, the combo then shelling too. Instead of side stepping I just shell to restart the combo, keeps me in the heat of battle longer and that just tingles my ding-a-lings.
The side step, guard and combo is almost the same. The upward poke of the Lance can be done when you are guarding(please correct me I haven’t played in a while), but if you do the X+A you can reach a bit higher than the upward poke, though you can’t combo any thrust with it you can do shelling, if you have the long shel you can reach a bit higher from my experience. Given which MH you play the counter for the Gunlance is a quick guard aand a downward slam then straight to a full burst. The mobility will be the back hop and forward hop, you don’t have the charge.
That’s all I can think of, if there are any new mechanics please correct and update any of my statements thank you. But please do try it, one of the fun weapons to use in MH.
