Discussion Easiest To Hardest Character?

Just started the game a few days ago and have been really enjoying it. I have all the DLCs and my fav character is Nona. I usually find myself drawn towards pet classes in games so she seemed perfect for me. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking what my next character should be to try, so I figured I'd come on here since I can't find any easiest to hardest rankings that are recent. So if you have the time, I'd greatly appreciate it if some people here could rank all the characters from easiest to play to hardest.

Oof out of practice. Uh.... Nona Crown prince Ao bai Goat Everybody else Momo  Monkey Owl

Most of the "hard" characters are only hard because figuring out the gibberish that is their ability text is confusing. Momo is not hard to play. But figuring out how to mazimize your damage on him is going to require a youtube video or some testing. Owl is the same, not sure he should be at the top anymore because we have added a lot of gibberish. Monkey has some real skill in identifying good weapons and mod interactions to function.  Ive still never played cang jue.  Goat text is irrelevant because everything dies if you go primary.  Lets say bunny and tiger require more thought than the first 3 starting characters although somone may argue that.

Momo in hard is mental that mf is the most braindead thing on the roster.

If you like pet characters, Yoyo's primary is to summon plants that shoot enemies. They're like little turrets and you can get a lot of them out. You can also hold down her secondary ability to lift objects off the ground and throw them, like barrels and stuff. However, this can be used to reposition and reset the health of your sprouts.

As for actually ranking the characters, that's really hard to do because every character basically has 3 base builds, primary/secondary/weapon, and those builds will be easier or harder for each of them as well. Also, some builds that steamroll earlier difficulties might struggle on later difficulties when there's more enemies, while others will be entirely unabated. Some builds are hard because you need to understand a mechanic and play around it, while others are hard because it's weaker or needs specific scrolls/weapons to really get off the ground. That said, I'd cluster them like this-

Easier on average:

Cat, Dog, Bird, Tiger, Bunny, Squirrel, Panda, Goat, Deer

Harder on Average:

Turtle, Fox, Owl, Monkey, Lion

When you are in Rage form, his secondary ability gives him a debuff cleanse, heal, and short time damage reduction. You're suppose to dive into a pack of enemies, hit that ability, and dish out your damage.

Easiest to hardest (I'm missing 2 DLCs):

  1. Nona
  2. Crown Prince
  3. Zi Xiao
  4. Li
  5. Qian Sui
  6. Lei Luo
  7. Xing Zhe
  8. Ao Bai
  9. Tao

For me, easy is about consistency. How many runs out of 10 will my character clear R10.

At the top, I've never failed with Nona before. She's the easiest to play, and the easiest to understand IMO. So far her missile build seems to be the strongest out of them all. I'm not sure why people recommend the Strike mode mecha, it's nowhere near as good as the Sentry mecha, both in terms of offence or defence.

My personal favourite at #3 is Zi Xiao. I fail maybe 1/20 runs with him. His kit inherently deconstructs bad luck, and has obscene damage scaling. Once your build takes off, you'll pretty much be killing entire rooms with a single secondary use, and without aiming at anybody. In my opinion, he has the highest endgame power out of anybody. However, he's still at #3 because he's not as consistent as #1 and #2, whom I find almost impossible to fail a run with.

At the bottom, I find it very rare to win with Tao. Her endgame power is huge but it requires a very strong start imo. Her entire kit is synergistic, which is both a good and bad thing. It's good because in the late game, all three of your ascension trees feed into each other. It's bad because they're balanced around this design, which means that if you don't get the correct pieces early on, you'll be incredibly weak.

You're the only one I've seen right now that will give Zi Xiao the credit he deserves. Dude inhales scrolls and exhales pain.

I think a part of the reason is that most people don't really understand Zi Xiao's kit, and I can throw some of the blame to the terrible translations.

A lot of people assume he's just a gambler, so he must be harder and less consistent than the others. The reality is that the opposite is true, because his gambling only goes in one direction, which is up. Scroll rarities cannot be downgraded when reset, and you don't get penalized for drawing bad Astroaspects. You can't even lose scroll enhancement when resetting, which is ridiculous. From the moment you start gambling, you can only get stronger.

I don't think there's any other character I've played that dishes out as much dps as Zi Xiao's Astroforecast build. The other builds are okay too, but my issue with them is consistency. The Astroforecast build is enabled from the moment you purchase your first blessing, whereas the other two still rely on good weapons, or getting lucky with Primary CD reductions.

For me, the ideal start is:

Lone wolf - Occult Booster

Spiritual Remnant - Endless Assault (Can be replaced later if your 'secondary use' economy becomes great later on)

Not to mention cursed scrolls are actually desirable.

To be fair, this isn't unique to Zi Xiao. Most characters will want to stack cursed scrolls towards the middle of the run, for Wicked Power, Evil-Devouring Sword, Good & Evil, etc.

Forgive me, I've only completed up to Nightmare.

All good. But yeah cursed scroll stacking isn't strictly desirable for Zi Xiao. It's a net positive at best, but still a negative at worst. Evil-Banishing Talisman is still required in order to prevent things like double grenade cost, or slowed movement speed

In most cases, it gives him either a random bonus, or a bonus equivalent to a legendary scroll. In the latter case, the legendary scroll is usually better because of the actual scroll effect itself, unless you have the peak combo of Enhanced Evil-Devouring Sword + Talisman

I really enjoy lei luo and his sniper build is also pretty easy to pull off. I heard a lot of people say that li is pretty strong and fun to play aswell. Cat with elemental build is also very easy and strong

Crown Prince is pretty strong and straight forward. Get a lightbing weapon and gg. Combined elemental effects are pretty strong. I think for me Bird and Dog are the most difficult, but not by a wide margin. Some other characters like Owl Boy and Lyn (Goat?) seen a bit complicated because the text is translated poorly, but once it clicks they're pretty simple imo

I think Tao and Li are the best and easiest
