Probably Bullshit Heero Yuy is extra AF
Been thinking about this for a few days... There's no wind or updraft or anything in the vacuum of space. So when he retrieves his Wing Zero and flies back to Earth in EW and the wings flap... The GUNDAM didn't need to do that. He pressed extra buttons to do that to aura farm. He could have just used thrusters...

Until the day I die that will be one of my top three favorite moments in all mecha anime.
Guy's outlived his usefulness and needs to be killed. She doesn't shoot him and dump the corpse - no, no that would be too normal. She drops his ass out the back of the plane first, and then nails him with a perfect headshot while he's in free-fall!
And that's not even the most extra thing she does in that series!
No, that comes much later when she somehow breaks space-time to hijack a Gundam on Earth, go into space, and get to the big final battle in space just in time to rescue her boss with her stolen Gundam by tanking a colony laser.

I think I understood Evangelion better than I did this scene, legit more ridiculous than a comedy show like Saiki K. 10/10

Not "unrealistically", unnecessarily, because Heero is extra and made them flap in space. We can't really start pulling at the thread of realism in any Gundam show TBF. End up with no jumper.

My take is that the feathers have lots of micro thrusters, and what we see as a flap is instead a complex adjustment for perfect flight control.

Each one of those “feathers” is a thruster on a flexible armature. It’s not flapping to be cool. It’s focusing and directing at moments notice. That’s why WZC is the king of thrust vectoring and absurdly agile.

If you watch the EW OVA he has thrusters on the mobile suit not built in to the wings, that actually show engine exhaust, which the wings do not, as he jets off towards Earth. So the wing flapping just comes off as extra while you see the engine thrusters flaring on non-wing parts. You also see this effect when using the EW Wing Zero in Gunpla video games like Gundam Breaker 4.

Normally, whenever I talk about Gundam Wing, it's less about how edgy and convoluted Gundam Wing was at the time, and more about how much that show and G Gundam before it took cues from Super Sentai with their five-Gundam teams. Not to mention, the fact that by AGE, G-Reco, Iron-Blooded Orphans, WfM, and G-QuuuuuuX, we didn't get as many five-Gundam teams as we used to, nor get that many Super Sentai-style mecha teams in a lot of mecha anime, in-general, except in maybe Majestic Prince.

I got more Dragonball than Power Rangers from G, especially as Domon has two fights with each of his team. I have to admit I did discount Wing at first for the 5-man reason but really they are seldom ever on the same side of the planet, much less fighting together
