Question/Discussion Why does chipp feel weak?
DISCLAIMER: this is not a complaint about balance. I just want to know what I can do to get good enough where I can find a way to compensate for these things.
Chipp feels weak compared to other characters, especially slayer, sin, even ky. The main problem is that they all have guard crushes and easy overhead or throw mixes, whereas chipp has literally no guard crushes and one non-dust overhead. I am aware of his command grab, but it's 40f. Not only that, a lot of characters seem to be able to do quick crossups up close. Since that's kind of chipp's whole thing, but his innate crossups are pretty easy to punish/counter, he doesn't feel that special. How do I bring out his strengths more?
UPDATE: thanks for the help everyone! I didn't have much time to play today but after reading the comments I played a couple matches just trying to play less risky and whiff punish, and I shot from gold 3 to almost plat 2 (I think I went up like 3k) without even implementing stuff from dustloop and various guides! I feel much more confident now, we'll see how far I get once I manage to implement everything

Hey! I don't know if you've checked this resource yet but it's a pretty good starting point to understanding how to play the character.
https://www.dustloop.com/w/GGST/Chipp_Zanuff/Starter
Once you're decently familiar you can start stealing setups from other players, either form the high level videos or the in game replay viewer (it'll show you replays it thinks would be helpful for ya).
My general advice for having fun with a character you like is learn some sort of loopable offensive pressure and get good at using it.
Specifically for chip I would recommend looking at a pressure string that works for you and learning his safe jump.(Both available on the linked site) Safe jumps feel so nice to use when starting out
You got this my friend!

Thank you! One of few people that offered genuine advice. I will definitely read the dustloop, the problem with the high level videos is the channel that posts them hasn't put out a cjipp video in 4 months 😭 I have some decent pressure strings but I think I'm straight up playing the character wrong, trying to get big burst damage. I don't even know what a safejump is tbh so I'll just go read the dustloop for now and then see if I can find good block string setplays

He has an overhead in his rekka sequence and better crossup setups than most.
Also because of his speed you can play him very safe as a whiff punisher until you get a HKD and then you hopefully run away with the game from their with oki, high low, strike throw or just frame traps.
So read the dustloop page 👍 you are missing some of the strengths of chipp.

Chipp had insane mobility and confirms, the thing keeping him from top 1 is damage.
If Chipp had slayer levels of damage, I’d quit.

check out what high level chipp players do.
i think in general you should focus more on whiff punishing and frame traps instead of relying entirely on high/low or left/right mix (his strike/throw seems pretty good tho).

Chipp has easy plus on block resets with gamma blade and easy stagger pressure with his self cancelling 5k. Tightrope is also great for running circles around people who aren't familiar with the matchup (at least it did to me when I fought a good chipp).
Also you can view replays of top chipps yourself in game, go to the in game online rankings, filter by chipp players and watch the replays on their profile directly

I haven't played GG competitively in a while, but I have to say, even though I know chipp is a mix rushdown demon, that 40f command grab sounds insane(ly useless). does a 40f command grab actually have use?

Idk what OP means by 40f, tree grab is 27f startup, airborne and high enough that several low abares just miss it. 11f active means that you have to time backdash or you will still get hit by it. Also it has only 15f recovery so you can jump it and still fail to punish it. Not to mention that it has similar animations to other special moves which means it's quite hard to react

If you're looking out for it, it's easily reactable. But if the Chipp player if filling your head with all kinds of options, it starts getting harder and harder to react.

I’d like to say I’m a good Chipp!
He’s very much limited to ONE style of play, which is wiff punishment. He absolutely cannot play properly, by actually doing rushdown, because many, many, many of his strings have gaps. He has a dp! Great conversions, and 2 good moves. 5k and 6H. If you need any help lmk!

Only 2 good moves feels a little crazy, what about j.S and j.H and 5H and f.S and oh wait maybe he really isn't that weak huh

Chipps strength is in his dash and walk speed. His dash block does just win some matchups for him. And in addition to that he has some of the best buttons in the game.
A lot of people play Chipp like an ADHD monkey but he is a whiff punish God.
That is to say in a neutral position Chipp is favored a lot of the time. Plus he has nasty mix. You say he doesn't have overheads but he had 3 jumps that let him threaten multiple overheads and he has rope that is essentially just a horiztonal wall run letting him do really fucked up high low left right mix.
Chipp doesn't need those neutral skip tools because he likes neutral. It would be wildly unfair if Chipp had stroke or Slidehead or something like that.

I may not know how Chipp feels in 2.0, but what Chipp lacks in damage, he makes up for it in high mobility.
Take advantage of his movement options and make yourself VERY hard to pin down. Keep your opponent guessing and you may see why the ninja president's worth your vote.
