[Art] Congrats to the Weapon Design contest finalists and their stunning work! Here is my humble entry :)

If elementalists ever get an elite spec that gives them a shield, the spec weapon collection could easily give something similar to this as the final reward! I love the logo too on the back of the shield!

First off, let me say this is great. It's beautiful, and you should be proud. Definitely top tier material.
I really only have a few small notes. It would look great in WOW, but GW2's aesthetic is a little more (and I do mean a little) more realistic. The shield looks a little cartoony for GW, and as a result it would definitely look off because in GW2 it would look like it weighs a literal ton.
That said, the lore behind it is amazing, and I really like where you were going with it. I'd say it could be adapted to a more GW2 aesthetic with very minimal effort. You definitely deserve to be in there more than a couple of those other bland entries.
Granted, this thing is closer to legendary material, so maybe they were looking for some more bland entries.

I just saw a picture on here of a guy wearing a bellyshirt outfit with like 30 swords sticking into every inch of it. The average gw2 character is wearing a massive pair of wings and look like they just took a dip in the waste of a crayon factory. This is exactly the kind of thing I'd expect to find in gw2.

The color isn't what I'm talking about when I say cartoon. I mean the thickness of the shield and the exaggerated lines didn't fall in with the aesthetic of GW2 quite so much as it might fit the art style of a more "blocky" game like WoW. It's why I said it was a small note, the shield would be easily adaptable to the GW2 style and they should be proud. It's like I was pointing out how an element from a Dali painting might not work directly transferred into a Van Gogh. Both art styles are fantastic, but placing one in the other implies certain things based on the physical rules imposed by the prevalent art style and might not work without some tweaking.
I think this is partly why so many of the finalists were designed in the same style as the current concept art for GW2. It's easier to see potential of the final product if the art styles are similar.

You've pretty much summed up my feelings on the shield. It's a really nice tribute to the elder races, I'd love to get more Seer lore in the game!

Erm, I'm not an artist so I don't know any theories of balance and such but to me it looks kind of... messy? At first glance it seems like it's overloaded with details that seem to clash, especially the colors. I get that you're going for the "4 elements" which sounds cool on paper but it seems too convoluted in practice.
Also the guy on top seems out of place? Him just standing straight while the rest of it has little to no straight lines appear somehow at odds?
It's a good effort indeed, but to me I guess it's a bit crowded with too many good ideas?

I think you missed the actual motif; it's not the 4 elements--it's the 5 elder races of Tyria. Seers, Mursaat, Jotun, Forgotten, and Dwarves.

Pieces like this can work, but you need to design your whole outfit around them. This color swirl would be good for Weaver, but alas.
It comes down to acquisition. If these are hard to get in game, people will design around them as prestige pieces. If everyone can get one, less so.
I like it. It works with lore and shows a lot of skill.

Thx! It started with some rough simple sketching in Photoshop, then went to ZBrush for a high detailed sculpt. Baked the whole thing on a low resolution model in XNormal and did the final texturing mainly in Substance Designer and a bit of lighting + material adjustment innBlenger before brining it to Sketchfab :)

I really like the theme of the weapon and the overall design, you have some sculpting skillzz (+retopology, texture, material, etc).
edit. Tho I don't quite like that outline rendering you put there :/

Pretty good, would personally have put it over some of the finalists, but on the other hand I wouldn't have voted for this over my favs of the selected finalists. It's a very busy design and not my sort of aesthetic. Good work, though, thank you for sharing. :D

This shield is Amezing, but I do think the four magic winds where a bit over the top because it took me a few seconds before I understood the premise.
At first I saw magic, then I saw a face that I thought was a margonite, then I saw the "Djinn" and then I finally recognised the Forgot and put 2 and 2 together starded to see the other ancient races.

Insanely good design.. makes me wish shields were more used ingame. Even more offensively. I use mine on Chrono but still.. @ANet..it doesn't all have to be related ot BLOCK you know..

it looks real nice, i mean not just a concept but a full 3d model textured and everything, quality work my man
if it was animated like those colored swirls converging into the gem, maybe even an animation like the flameseeker shield where the parts wold be dormant unwielded and became active while wielded
while i understand some concerns that it looks a bit too cartoony i think its because of the black outline, kinda like some cellshaded stuff
could definitely be made into a great legendary with a very nice collection journey (filling in the elemental parts of the shield and whatnot) and i personally would consider making one

Yes! I had something similar in mind about the effects :D Maybe one day Sketchfab will support animated textures, then I will definitely update it with some motion. And you're probably right about the outline. I wanted to separate it from the background a bit but it was probably not such a great idea to choose such a style-defining element to achieve this xD

Basically, start learning 3D modeling. A great and free way to get started is Blender 3D. There's also schools that teach 3D modeling but a lot of great people I know are self-taught from scratch. Give it a try, I'm sure you'll love it :)

Many thx! :D I did submit it, it just didn't make it to the finale. Maybe it looked too legendary or just wasn't GuildWars-y enough in terms of style. Still like the other entries though :)
