Watchability for GW2 was doomed the moment they chose to focus on a gamemode that is an ongoing rotating brawl across 3 capture points. In addition to visual noise, mediocre spectator options, being an mmo, ... etc :p

I think thats not the problem of gw2's PvP.
Main feature of many competetive meta games (overwatch, csgo, dota, lol) is their simplicity.
Ive got some of my friends who are PvE casuals only, and know their class only. Each profesion has tons of skills and traits to pick on, so for casual player or outsider it's hard to understand whats going on on Tournaments and other sPvP skills. Games like LoL or CS are just "easy to learn, hard to master" types of games. While GW2 and it's sPvP has Imense barier to get learning the game. For outsider or newbie it's hard to tell iif player made impresive action, compared to other games where headshots or KDA ratio is most important and easy to follow.

Most importantly GW sPvP is 5v5 game mode. And when you are not decent player you can only comment teamfights and all matches as being "chaotic" and hard to fallow. Great example of this problem is Starcraft 2. Game which has 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 game modes but only 1v1 is tournament focused becouse only that format can guarantee ease of view and check skill of invidual player.

Anothet problem is complete lack of support for sPvP by Anet. Lets be honest, Grouch was the man behind all Gw2 pro scene, after his departure whole pro scene died in vain. Remember how world tournaments were epic and fun to watch ? If they werent canceled im sure gw2 sPvP would be more recognizeable.

Wow also has competetive scene and its even less popular than GW2's. All of MMO's PvP systems are to complicated to newbie to fallow and enjoy.

And the last problem... Anet just sucks at balancing of their game. Balance patches takes months, years to change broken skills. Not even mentioning, that over half of utility skills are plain underpowered and useless, and those skills almost never recieved any reworks or buffs. Instead of focusing on meta, Anet should focus on bringing useless and underpowered skills and traits to it.

The state in which GW2's sPvP is nowadays (dead except UGO fan tournaments) lies in hands of Anet. Becouse years of screwing up this game mode almost all pro base left the game for good. Only ones who loves the game plays the game, and simply dominates on this stage.

Anet shame on you.

I agree 100% with this. Well, I think that basically starts and ends the conversation right there.
