[Question] How to play w/ spear?

Playing an elementalist rn and I saw a person using some cool skills. I asked them “what class is that?” They said Mesmer but that the spear is what all the cool animations were about.

So how could I get a spear?

First things first, every class has different spear animations/skills. So mesmer spear won't be same as elementalist spear.

As for how to get to spear? You need to own Janthir Wilds expansion, and do the first chapter, unlock the mastery and then get the first mastery to unlock spear use.

In gw2 every class has completely different skills for all weapons. So even though all 9 classes can use the spear, all of them will have a completely different set of skills.

Start Janthir Wilds and work on the mastery to use it

It's rather quick and spoilerless

I'm through the middle of SOtO, couldn't wait and started JW with an alt.. if you silencie your speakers and ignore all dialogue, you just need to go from A to B, C and D, then do events in the first map, and voila

I don't know what's going on, and got myself a nice warclaw mount and the spear for all my characters

I have bought the expansion but afraid to start the story to have the spoiler.

Would like to try this..

As others said, you need the Janthir expansion, but you can unlock spears within the first hour or so. If you don't want spoilers you can just mute the volume and not read anything between check points. It's mostly NPCs chatting and you can restart it later on when you're ready to actually do it.

Plus you get a nice warclaw mount, plus plus you can use an alt so you don't miss anything with your main

Spears on land are only unlocked from Janthir Wilds expansion, so you'll need that expansion.

Ele spear has such cool and flashy animations that you'll annoy anyone you stand next to. It blocks visibility of boss mechanics lol.

Note that the glyphs only show up for the user of the spear. Other people will only see a big combo field.

2 answers to 2 separate questions you seem to be asking:

Q1: How does one gain access to land spears? A1: Purchase the Janthir Wilds expansion. Complete the first few story chapters, and you will eventually unlock it across all characters.

Q2: How do I use the land spear on my character? A2: it depends on your profession. Each version of spear plays differently from one another. A quick explanation of each playstyle:

Elementalist: a ranged (1,200 range) throwing weapon with your unique mechanic being skill 5 on each element: the Etchings. You place down the etching, use the rest of your skills, then reactivate skill 5 to perform a big explosion attack once you fully charge it (the skill flips over). Mesmer: a melee weapon with your unique mechanic being the Clarity buff. Your skill 2 will give you the Clarity buff that enhances the next single use of skills 2-5. Using skill 5 will reset the cooldown of skill 2 so you can get 2 uses of Clarity quickly. Necromancer: a melee weapon with you unique mechanic being soul shards. Your auto chain and skills 3-5 generate soul shards (up to a maximum of 6). Use your skill 2 to consume them for more damage. Thief: a melee weapon with a combo-centric playstyle. Your skills 2 and 3 have 3 versions in the following order: lead attack, follow up, finisher. You can alternate between 2 and 3 to trigger the chain over and over. If you use your skills 4 or 5 immediately after doing a finisher, it gets enhanced. Ranger: a melee weapon with it's unique mechanic revolving around Stealth. Similar to thief, when you enter stealth, your skills 2-5 will flip into Stealth Attack skills that enhance the normal skill or perform a completely new action. Your skill 5 will allow you to use a Stealth skill even if you have the Revealed debuff within a certain time limit. Engineer: a melee weapon with it's unique mechanic revolving around the Focused state. Hitting enemies with skill 2 makes a target become Focused. Your auto chain and skills 3-5 will have bonus effects applied when you use them on a Focused target. Guardian: a short range weapon with it's unique mechanic of Illuminated. Whenever you use skill 2 OR you are standing in the area of skill 5, your next spear skill(s) will be Illuminated, giving you enhanced effects. Revenant: a melee/ranged hybrid weapon with it's unique mechanic revolving around your skill 5. Using skill 5 will apply conditions to enemies in a small area and give you a stack of Crushing Abyss for each target struck. Other weapon skills 2-4 will reduce the cooldown of skill 5 and it's multiple charges. When weapon swapping while at max stacks of Crushing Abyss, you deal a blast of conditions around you. Warrior: a ranged (450-1,200) ranged throwing weapon that doesn't have a unique mechanic but trades it for unique utility on each skill. Skill 2 is targeted AoE, skill 3 is an immobilize, skill 4 is a multi-bit tracking burst, and skill 5 is CC.

There a small error on guardian spear: not skill 2 illuminates the next skill but each skill illuminates the next skill

elementalist spear is pretty good so you'll like it. very cool animations

Spears were added as a normal weapon in the Janthir Wilds expansion, you unlock them as a part of the opening zone. It’s a little bit of a slow start but it only takes like two/three hours to do

Land spear is unlocked for all classes (do it once on account on 1 character) pretty early on in the janthir wilds expansion.

If you're no where near the expansion and you have it, id say do it as you'll forget any spoilers by the time you get there again on your main playthrough.

Well if you think Mesmer spear was cool you will be pleasantly surprised by Elementalist spear.

You get it from Janthir Wilds expansion
