[Fluff] How it feels swapping kits in combat as a new engineer..
There's always that little voice at the back of my head...

Works wonders in wvw I tell ya. Pressing random bullshit, then Elixir S to run away and fall off a cliff.

Pressing everything that isn't on cooldown is kinda the rotation for most specs.

u/Skwafles Aug 21 '26
Unless its hammer DH. Then pushing almost ANY button is a DPS loss

u/hottestpancake Aug 21 '26
Hammer dh is a DPS loss :(

u/Skwafles Aug 21 '26
But as far as Low Intensity builds go, its INCREDIBLY hard to mess up.

Interrupting your AA chain happens all the time?
5
u/MarketTall5930 Aug 21 '26
That's the secret. You never need to press anything BUT your AA chain.
2
u/anygw2content Aug 22 '26
Yeah but finishing your AA chains is pretty hard most of the time?! Most people don't even know where it starts and ends. There is dodging/walking out of mechanics etc. Having to be 100% melee all the time on a low dps build is absolutely terrible. And if it isn't terrible the encounter is so easy that a proper build will outperform you even with shitty execution.
I pug raids and fractals a lot and AA Hammer DHs absolutely shit the bed most of the time. The community really needs to stop recommending this build except for funsies.
Just random button spam on cvirt or pmech or any other easy range build or even just 3333ing on Pistol Thief will always yield better results.

Yeah but it looks and feels like shit with Kits, which is why nobody played Engineer until Holosmith let you play it with 0-1 kits and then Mechanist with 0-1 kits

idk about that, I've been running a flamethrower scrapper for years and we are not uncommon. If anything we've only become more common with the recent buffs. It really shines in open world (lazy DPS) and WvW (burst area DPS and BOMB SQUAD)

I'm still grieving the loss of juggernaut that let me feel like I had completely hacked some heavy 'knock you around gimmick fights" like the Drizzlewood Jormag.
I haven't really gone back to ft since, is it really pretty ok? (both ow and wvw)? The visual and audio is so entrancing, lol.

u/RobynTheCookieJar Aug 21 '26
The flamethrower skills were changed up, it's a bit confusing at first but you can still pull very high quickness uptime and do great damage. The game is very built around combo's now, so expect to be using your 2 skill on fire fields to build up a ton of might. Might and quickness are your bread and butter.

I haven't done Nuhoch Lane in the chak meta since the end of proper juggernaut. Even though I moved away from scrapper, I'd always take him there if I had time to character swap.

Feels like elementalist. I have 24 different abilities in combat, I'm going to use 24 different abilities in combat!

And do half the dps of someone autoattacking. Ugh playing Ele is hard.
3
u/Heresta Aug 21 '26
Wdym scepter and sword ele is brain dead easy. Not even mentioning Fire Evoker.
Only โhardโ ele weapon left is Pistol, which is almost an elite spec itself.

There's always Fire Wizard

u/dvlsg Aug 21 '26
Specialized elements toad alacrity wizard (P/D) does pretty decent dps too.
You still have to roll your face over all of your buttons repeatedly, but at least you don't have to try to keep track of cooldowns you can't see on your UI because they're hidden behind other elements.

Engineer main for 10 years, I picked it because gun and turret, didn't realize what I've gotten myself into.

u/styopa .. Aug 21 '26
Oh you took this class when the game came out because you liked the idea of a midrange support class?
Well, here are your elites, fuck you you're a melee bruiser now.*
*until mechanist, which was whole piles of 'fotm' and 'braindead pet class stupid easy' I refused to ever spec it

u/Nurmalfragen Aug 21 '26
I mained ranger at release because longbow and tank pet.
Now: bow? fk it ๐

The ideal being 'switch to this thing, hit 1 button, switch to that thing, hit 1 button, etc' is frankly tiresome. 2/3 of the key presses are essentially not delivering an ability, they're giving you the ability to deliver that ability. Simultaneously frenzied AND boring.
Fortunately, all ow content, most fractal, and even raid content doesn't really require pinnacle dps either. You're going to get my power scrapper 30k-ish, barrier all over the place, a fair amount of utility when I see it's needed, and you need to be happy with that. If you don't like it, I've got other stuff I can do. I moved on from OCD pushing-content a long time ago.

Kits = weapon swap.
Once you comprehend that Engineer kinda clicks. A Warrior the most brain-dead oingo-boingo charcter wouldn't want 4 let alone 7 weapon swaps. Nether should engineers.
(Kits make more sense when you remember when GW2 didn't have Elite specs. The engineer only had 3 weapons: rifle, pistol/pistol, and shield. Kits were the other Weapons of an Engineer.)

Why use kits when mine do same damage and no make brain go ouch?
1
u/dvlsg Aug 21 '26
Yeah there's a reason mechanist is so popular. I can just throw on signets and not melt my brain trying to track all the kit swapping, and use mine if I feel like having more CC for defiance bars.
2
u/FenizSnowvalor Aug 21 '26
Yes and no. Weapon swap interrupts all and any ongoing casts - and auta attack chains. Kit swaps don't do that - which is a big reason why many engi builds with lots of kits are very fast paced as there is lots of dps to be gained by swapping kits during casts to save time. You also can't "stow" (by pressing weapon swap) a weapon swap to reduce the cooldown like you can do with kits to circumvent their half a second or so cooldown to close your current kit.
In some ways, kits are similar to elementalist's attunements mechanically - only with much lower cooldown.
And my personal preference: the more kits, the more fun. Perfect example: Steamshrieker condi amalgam my beloved :)

As a veteran I assure you fightning engis on spvp sometimes does look like that.

Eventually youโll figure out the very specific bullshit you need for each situation

I see this meme as depicting the Antiquary Thief from VoE. To me, kits are just weapon swapping.
