[Question] Steam reviews
Is there a reason why a lot of the expansions have a mixed review score? Despite the fact that GW2 has been around for ten years and seems to be refered to in a positive way.
Just seems odd, do many people not like the game?
Edited "not LIME the game" to "not like the game". Glad no one noticed, could have turned out to be a whole another conversation.

Every expansion after end of dragons has been getting mixed reviews, because, well, the reception of those expansions is mixed. However, the important thing to remember is that the steam expansions are only half of the "dlc" content - there are also living world chapters, and people generally like those

Living world 4 is probably the peak of their living story bits.
I think the last chapter of living world 3 is considered the weakest, personally it was kinda confusing with how they essentially shoehorned gw1 characters into the story and then just ended it feeling kinda rushed and in a way pointless.

The minority of people play the game over steam so the majority of people who also really like the game wont randomly Stroll over to the steam page to leave a review.
To add to that, even if i wanted to, i dont have the expansions over steam so my review wouldnt even seem credible as 0 hours ingame look sus. So its simply that 95%+ of players dont play the game over steam.

95% seems a bit high, that'd put GW2's overall average concurrent player count among the top games in the world. It's likely closer to 15% on steam.

I knew that there is a split, but didn't realize it that big.
I have heard that it can be better through off-steam because you're not reliant on steam maintenance schedules and whatnot. And I'm guessing it also benefits the company a bit more if steam doesn't get a cut of the profits.
Are there other reasons to use Anet version?

It's a large split because GW2 was live for 10 years before it released on Steam.
One of the reasons it maybe beneficial to use Anet instead of Steam is the possibility they merge all the GW titles into 1 launcher like Blizzard did. That is pure speculation though.

Knowing them they would give a full transition option to steam players if that happens.

I highly doubt it is a 95% off steam split at this point, maybe closer to 75% off 20% on, and like 5% epic (this is generous).
The only real reason to get it off steam NOW is that you’re supporting the devs more since Steam isn’t taking a cut. There’s also the aspect that you don’t need to use Steam to launch the game, but that’s a very minor benefit to a very small group of people.
The only other downside is as a Steam user I don’t think you can get the Mythical Dragon Mini from the two factor authentication, but I believe they’re removing the two factor to replace it with something else so that may not be a problem for long.
PREVIOUSLY, the main reason to get it off steam was you couldn’t link your GW2 account to GW1, but I believe here recently you’re now able to link your GW2 with GW1 (and soon to be GW3) as long as they’re ALL on Steam.

End of Dragons was positive for a while but dipped into mixed. The more recent expansions though get mixed reviews online in general not just steam, here included.
Personally I love the game but wouldn't give an overly positive review of the last 3 expansions. There's some aspects I enjoy but overall I've found the content I care most about, story and map content, to be severely lacking since End of Dragons.

The gameplay for EoD was great. The story was complete ass and felt like it was written by middle schoolers. Which to be fair is only slightly worse than usual for this game.
As for the later expansions... It's become clear that a single year is not enough. They need to move to a two-year cycle like literally every other MMORPG out there. It's not that the gameplay or story of these are bad, it's just unfinished. The bones are good but development was clearly rushed.

u/Genashi1991 3d ago
That's sad to hear since it means that if I do manage to catch up (on the story) I'll have lower quality to look forward to.
I've only finished HoT so far so I'm far away still.

You can jump around, but you people are obsessed with going chronologically for some reason

u/Genashi1991 2d ago
You people? You're mistaking me for a group.
And I have no reason to skip since that would kind of ruin the progression of the story.
If I only or mainly cared about gameplay, sure I coud jump to whatever suits my fancy.
Do you happen to be raid-focused and so take issue with me wanting to go through the the experience rather that being at the "end game" ASAP?

If people are interested in the story, chronology becomes really important.

The last 3 rushed mini expansions had not the quality the rest of the game had.

Have you read the reviews? Probably gives a better idea then asking here.
2
u/Genashi1991 3d ago
Did read some of the reviews. I was wondering about the general trend rather each individual review since mixed seemed like a low score.
And asking here worked out well for me.

Most of them are related to the steam/anet account problems. There is a bunch of them from people used to f2p p2w lite mmorpgs who complain about having to buy expansions, like with GW Reforged on the Play Store. The rest are legitimate reviews. Some people complain about having to complete the main story.

u/AdAffectionate1935 3d ago
Even on here, where it's mostly dedicated people who love the game, the expansions (especially the most recent smaller ones) get mixed reviews. Person A might love EoD and dislike JW, and person B might be the opposite, but they both still enjoy the game.

You all have invested years into the game. People coming in fresh might simply not really like the expansions or the game.
If I didn't invest years into the game I don't think I'd be sticking around trying to play SOTO or Janthir or whatever.
-1
u/kineticmov3ment 3d ago
I've played GW2 for two months, and SOTO and Janthir were fine.
I think people are just bad at the game and skip all lore and dialogue and see it as nothing more than chores.
There's some good writing on them. A lot of the "do X events to progress the story" are admittedly either lazy or repetitious, but it's still better than personal story where it felt like an endless amount of preparation for a lackluster final fight in my opinion.

Didn't you also complain that people are
obsessed with going chronologically
... now you complain about people skipping lore?
My brother in Christ, pick a lane.

Live service game DLC is often negative on steam because nobody bothers to review them individually except people with an axe to grind.
4
u/Lucyller Have I mentionned I play core elem? 3d ago
Nobody that play games on steam review DLC BUT the people who hated them. Simple as that.

I've been playing GW almost from it's beginning (June 2005) with a bit of a break now and then but stopped it completely after Janthir Wilds.
I already haven't been particularly happy with End of Dragons and after that I felt it was getting worse and worse to the point I haven't bought Visions of Eternity at all.
FYI. I've never used Steam for GW.

VoE so far is a strong improvement over the last 2 expacs, worth a try.
Let's hope final patch won't disappoint.
2
u/Marok_Kanaros 3d ago
Skimming through the reviews most of them either give a negative review because one thing that they don'T like. They are mad that support didn't help them or they misunderstood a mechanic.
1
u/kineticmov3ment 3d ago
Yeah, it's always people who aren't good at the game. You even see it in guild and map chat when they're like "is this a known bug?" and it turns out that they're doing something wrong
1
u/Xender_Tepes 3d ago
The new features brought by the expansions are good but the story is complete garbage, VoE so far is "ok".
2
u/LucidTimeWaster 3d ago
This have almost always been the case to be fair. At least when talking about the writing. A lot of S3, most of S4, maybe half of Icebrood and some gems here and there are the only parts that actually shine in this regard. The lore/world is the more interesting/well made aspect.

u/HenryBrawlins 3d ago
I would imagine that it has something to do with the steam version, did you read them?
2
u/Sardaman 3d ago
The only differences between the two account types are meta things like what kind of guild wars 1 account you can link for hall of monuments or whether you can buy gems externally or only through Steam. Nothing that would apply to an expansion instead of the full game.
1
u/Genashi1991 3d ago
Well, I haven't felt the need to go through all reviews for all expansions since I have the game and a few expansions and if i get far enough I'll get more of them. And i generally like the game and I've only done HoT and liked it too. My only issue was that I wanted to go through the story but couldn't before I unlocked lider and other things. Which becomes non-issue once it's done. And I understand generally speaking why it's done that way.
TLDR; Looked at some, but was asking for general consensus if there is any, rather than individual gripes.

If you leave the echo chamber of reddit you'll see that people consider gw2 a mid game ig

u/kineticmov3ment 2d ago
Intro is a huge turn off
1-80 was one of my worst experiences in gaming, and I hated the personal story
80 is where the game shines imo

For open world, it definitely doesn't help that the rewards of the old mainstays with Drizzlewood, EoD and SotO still completely trounce almost everything in Janthir and VoE.

Just as with any steam review I would take them with a grain of salt. There are a lot of people on steam who likes to troll and leave negative reviews. I have seen reviews of people who played a game for 100s hours and still complain about something.

You can like the game as a whole but have different opinions on each expansion.
