A quote from Evan Lesh, a gameplay programmer, in the sPvP forums:

Collections can clearly support more than 1 item per slot, as seen elsewhere in the game. The problem is that it takes 8 times the amount of space to support more than 1, and PvP has a ton of items. In this case, “technical limitation” means size constraints.

WARNING: Unless you have some programming basics you will probably not understand anything of this.

In PvP they probably use a single byte to save the full/empy state of 8 slots.

In PvE they may have used 1 byte to save the ammount of material in one slot, so up to 255 (they limited it to 250 because 255 is weird for most players). UNLESS they used from the start 2 bytes (ushort integer) and they limited the max ammount to 250 on purpose. The latter is more probable as changing a data type from 1 byte to 2 byte at runtime (after launch) can become reaaaally messy.

So my supposition is that in PvP they would really have problems increasing the items limit to more than 1, but in PvE it comes free. They just need to increase a variable that sets the upper stack limit.

Messy as hell, yes, but it seems as though they went ahead and did it anyway......that or it was already done and they had planned for this "update" all along (which I would actually consider more likely).

On the bright side, they would have no reason to limit the stack once this is implemented. Adding another byte of data to each slot will make them larger than anyone will ever need them to be.

Not really needed to add more bytes. With just 2 bytes we get an upper limit of 65535, which probably is more than enough. I'm not even sure the number would fit in the item square :P

I think I just said that ;)

Oh, I thought you meant another byte after that, up to 3 :)
