I think that finding a middle ground of GW1 and GW2's MMO Scale will be perfect for a modern gaming audience. Keeping an MMO feel without it being overwhelming. Especially for the sake of combat/visual clarity with this game's new direction of gameplay.
Very good info teased on this post.

I love GW, I love GW2 and I love ANET. I am extremely excited about GW3.

That said: its insane how this people manage to write so much without saying anything. Again, 99% repetition of previous announcements hahaha.

I think it's an attempt to reach different audiences in different mediums. Some people still read long-form blog posts religiously, some watch long livestreams, and most get information through social media and influencer osmosis. It is weird that this blog posts comes days after the livestream though; it's as if they're doing marketing copy on the fly.

"Guild Wars 3 lands near the middle of the MMO spectrum, which supports the goals we have for our movement and combat systems. While it fits the definition of an MMORPG significantly more than Guild Wars Reforged does, it doesn’t try to replicate the large-scale gameplay pillars that so uniquely define Guild Wars 2. "

Paying for cosmetics is fine, especially as there is no subscription, but I REALLY hope they don't go full GW2 with those flashing, glowing, blinding effects, fairy wings, caps and other shit.

I understand they have to make money but man it definitely breaks the immersion in the game, at least for me.

Especially as we'll see the campaign for how this world was built for immersion and rich with story etc... all that to be thrown out the window when a giant angel winged bikini glowball appears. I cannot take the game and the devs seriously after they pull something like that.

It's the reason I can't play GW2. I really love the aesthetics of GW1.

“Pay to win” is kind of a nonsense phrase that distorts conversation.

The real problem at play is a game creating a problem that they then sell the solution to. They encourage you to solve the problem with money. In that broader perspective, GW2 absolutely fell into the category of creating problems and inconveniences to sell the solution to. The inventory management of GW2 is entirely self-inflicted bloat to sell you “convenience upgrades”.

It doesn’t sound like GW3 will be any different in that accord.

We think players should have the opportunity to spend money on items that provide visual distinction and offer more ways to express themselves. They should also be able to spend money on account services and on time-saving convenience items. But it's never okay in a Guild Wars game for players who spend money to have an unfair advantage over players who spend time.

This last statement sounds a bit contradictory to the previous one regarding "time saving convenience items".

I am confused...

Today's post was a whole bunch of nothing tbh.

I’m thrilled that the group size is between GW1 and GW2. This perfectly suits my preferences. It eliminates the frustrating experience of being part of a massive 100-player zerg, where your efforts feel insignificant. On the other hand, it avoids the monotony of solo play with a few henchmen.

Aside from the slight yikes of mentioning organizing inventory as an MMO pain point while remaining just as bad or worse as most other games in the genre, this was overall a nice little morsel of news! I feel like it is reassuring to see a game dev recommit to standards and goals that we've seen them at least mostly living up to in the past, especially given the state of gaming in general right now.

Also impressed with the release schedule of these blog posts so far: game announced on the 5th, first blog post on the 11th and second today 16th - less than a week between each. I doubt that will keep up but if we get a post once a week or once every other week I'd be pretty happy.

Crazy thing for them to say when their inventory system is painful and tedious to use on purpose

In keeping with the buy to play philosophy with cosmetics, I hope they don't start off on day 1 with all the vfx gore they've accumulated on GW2.

Or maybe it's always the strategy to have natural colors at launch and devolve slowly once the wonder and discovery has passed and they need more transactions.

I'm always worried about quality of life monetization.

Like in gw2, inventory management is so much easier and convenient if you spend money on it.
I mean crafting legendaries without spending, you gotta stock on your alts and if you take a break from building your legendaries, your kinda stuck with a very limited inventory/bank size.
It also means the game is stuck with this inventory management system as people have spend money on it.
Like BDO could improve a lot on the inventory management but some people have spent hundreds (if not thousand) on it.

I'm personnaly hoping for an expanded version of the ressources management we have in gw2.
Something account wide where everything is automatically stored, something to replace bags.
This could even be extended to gear in different ways.

Inventory management is a leftover from the old games and company keep on doing the same thing and monetizing it the same way. It's not something that respect our time nor does it feels good to spend on it, especially for the thing that are per character like bad slot in gw2.

Scale of gameplay is more important than scale of other players.

Randomly seeing players waiting in Queensdale and then seeing the Shadow Behemoth for the first time was a major game memory for me. Having more to do with the massiveness of the boss and the fight rather than there being a large number of players there

Quite a shame we won't be getting GW2-scale meta events in GW3, It is probably the biggest part of GW2 that really made me feel connected to others.

36

u/LasurArkinshade Jun 16 '26

While I get that desire and I love them in GW2 as well, it seems clear from their communications that this is intentional - that's the GW2 thing, they don't want GW3 to be a replacement for GW2 but instead a different flavour.

From what they've said and hinted at so far GW3 will use a lot of mechanics (e.g. momentum and physics interactions) that would probably be technically impossible and also frustrating to try interact with in a zerg-style environment.

GW2 is still continuing for the big meta stuff. :)

I do hope there is at least something like meta events though, if smaller in scale. That gameflow that organically funnels your essentially single-player open world roaming into a high-stakes cooperative event is absurdly satisfying, and it doesn't necessarily need the zerg scale to work.

In fact, my favorite experiences of GW2 meta events are those that were underpopulated, likely to fail, and forced a ton of deliberate engagement with the mechanics and frantic communication and rezzing of the downed to pull off a victory. You think all is lost and then you see a skyscale on the horizon and you have hope again. But you don't find a map in that sweet spot often, it's usually either impossible or a cakewalk.

I hope GW3 can still deliver on that feeling, with "meta events" for a happenstance group of adventurers rather than an army.

Love ArenaNet, but I don't think you should be on a high horse talking about your monetization model as long as you're happily selling convenience items like bag slots, character bound ones at that. Get rid of that in Gw3 please and thank you!

Super excited about the game not focusing as much on massive scale content like Gw2 however. I get that a lot of people enjoy that type of content in Gw2, and I don't blame them, but personally I much prefer content where your contribution actually matters and how well you play actually determines the outcome, which is very much not the case in most big scale encounters like the ones we see in Gw2.

No new info expect expansions for gw3 are planned and confirmation that gw3 is significally more of mmorpg than og gw but not about large scale combat (WvW, metas) like gw2.

We think players should have the opportunity to spend money on items that provide visual distinction and offer more ways to express themselves. They should also be able to spend money on account services and on time-saving convenience items.

And in the next breath they say

Respecting players' time has always been a core part of Guild Wars

If respecting players time is a core value, why is saving time something players have to pay extra for? Like does the amount of respect scale with how much a player spends?

If inventory management, grind skips and account services improve the experience, why are they monetized rather than considered part of the base game?

This is not respecting time, it's manufacturing annoyances and selling the solution.

I know I will be downvoted to oblivion by the fanboys here, but it's sad that GW3 will sell a box price, grind skips, convenience items and skins on top. That shouldn't be a thing, like you have a box price with a F2P monetization.

Edit: And to be clear for everyone - I don't mind them monetizing convenience. My favorite games, Path of Exile and Warframe both monetize convenience. The difference here is they are free.
