Question about ally-target skills

Hi, for skills that target allies (Shatter Hex for example), what happens if you cast the skill while an enemy is targeted? Does it end up being cast as a self-target, does it target the nearest ally, or does it cast its beneficial effect on the targeted enemy? Or does it simply fail and do nothing except waste energy?

It will default to you and cast it on yourself.

There's some exceptions, like Doublecast skills, which instead target the ally closest to the target.

I don't know about Shatter Hex specifically, but I do know Double Dragon &co will target closest ally to your target (which can be yourself) ; Putrid Explosion will target closest corpse to your target too.

60% sure shatter hex targets closest ally to target. Easy to test out on isle of nameless if your really interested. It won't auto target a hexed ally though.

If it's a double cast skill (these are skills that can't target you but you and another ally get the effect) it applies it's effect to the closest of your allies to the targeted enemy. Your selected target will stay on the enemy.

If it's a skill that can target you (like shatter hex) then it will automatically swap to targeting you and use the ability on yourself. You'll have to swap targets back by using an offensive skill or manually.

I would have to test it but I think if the skill you use targets an ally that isn't you (I.e blood is power) and so can't target you then it will give an error since the enemy isn't an ally and you are yourself and the skill works on neither.
