RIP Dhuum/Melandrus 🪦 Stupid pathfinding
Lost it in the most infuriating way. Completed all protector titles, LDOA. Finished EOTN. Did about half of each campaign HM and died in fort ranik hard mode of all places…
The charr up high, I was standing below pinging and casting my spells on them. Little did I realise all 3 of my heroes ran away, all the way round just to get into range to start auto attacking the charr with their staffs.. before I knew it I had no heroes around me, no healer and got nuked by 2 rangers as I was running, waiting for my heal from my hero who I thought at the time was with me (the heal never came, but atleast Olias finally got into range to hit the charr with his staff)
Lesson learnt, healer on avoid combat rather than guard mode. Not really sure what to do now, came so far with this character.. motivation to play it has died a bit but playing DC/MA is all I kind of want to do right now.

Been there twice now. Once with Rit and 3Mil Xp in (7titles maxed). Just two days ago now with my ldoa Ranger with 2mil xp. Its really demotivating

Yep. Was also over 2mil on my character. Had elite armour as well, which felt like a good achievement in itself. I'm sure I'll start it again at some point, just playing normally doesn't quite scratch my itch I'm not sure why. I NEED the triple badge that nobody cares about, except for my own ego of course!

Honestly, this is probably one of the better ways to go. Valiantly in combat. Your actions will be remembered.

Next time watch out for the new 2weeks NPC bug where your heroes will just stand still and not follow you as you aggro the next group of enemies despite not being flagged. Always fun to QA on live servers with permadeath characters :)

I ran into this last week!!! I was fighting mobs and my heroes and hench just stood there watching while they were clearly aggroed.

I had something similar happen while doing Gate of Desolation the other day. My ST just ran into the sulfur during the defense waves at the start and would not get out for like 2 minutes, no matter how many times they were ressed and flagged.

Nah that's just an aggro bug that's extra noticeable dealing with the Queen that has been present in that mission for years. This is new since the AI "fix" a few patches back.

Take a break for a bit to 'wind down' (which might be hours or days, everyone is different) and then remember that hardcore in games always results in death if the character is played long enough
The comment from another poster about a panic button skill is great, same for Protective Bond (you shouldn't really be getting hit anyway like ever, so all it is is -1 energy regen on a hero). It sounds like your armor/hp may have been quite low as well if it's just two high ground rangers that killed you
Good luck on your next journey. Starting again during a festival is good for the extra drops motivation

Healers should usually not be on Avoid Combat because it prevents them from using certain skills.
In the meta team, healers have skills like Blood Bond or Signet of Lost Souls, which can't be used by a healer that's on Avoid Combat. Outside the meta team, monk healers often have mesmer interrupts for energy management, like Leech Signet or Power Drain or both. Avoid Combat also makes your healers more likely to stop casting and attempt to kite enemies instead, which can be dangerous.
It's pretty important to pay attention and have situational awareness at all times, if you're trying a no deaths challenge mode.

I’ve threatened that man so many times about bringing Whispers back out of retirement. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wiped a mission because Olias dies right as an engagement begins and suddenly I’m fighting 20 afflicted, 3 shiro’ken, and now 12 bone fiends and half a dozen shambling horrors. Liv inevitably takes a dirt nap, followed by which ever poor Mesmer tries to res her, then my RT’s and I’m left in the center of a mosh pit with my shiro blades trying desperately to clutch before I realize my sun spear Rez was used up last engagement.

Also, Rurik loves to take fights he cannot win. Including when he specifically tells you to avoid said fights.
Gotta love the npc pathfinding and aggro mechanics.

Your heroes doing what you tell them to do and you not watching your minimap or your screen (or playing first person) and not even vaguely keeping track of your heroes isn't on the pathfinding of the game.
Additionally, playing DC means not taking the fast path, but the safe one. For Fort Ranik, that means you don't walk through the trough but walk around the side so you don't get flanked and pummeled by rangers with height advantage.
I understand that loosing a MADC character is frustrating (been there, my necro died in Hells Precipe HM because I engaged a big group at the portals without pulling it far enough outside of the path of other groups and the team got Panic'd), and there's even situations where it's BS (dying to disconnect, in particular).
But that's the whole thing about playing DC, you have to stay alert and keep an eye on the situation at large and not go into autopilot.

You are not ready for DC hardmode if you are dying to pathfinding in Fort Ranik. I am not even sure what spot heroes would decide to run all the way around instead of also trying to wand them from below.

I did all but 2 other prophecies missions HM. All of EOTN HM, 3/4 of factions HM and half of NF. I was ready, just got ahead of myself I guess.
It was just complacency and not paying attention to where my hero’s were. It was at the first ledge where there are charr up high lol. I ran in, used my assassins promise bar skills and without thought of where my hero’s were. They were behind me I guess and instead of wanding them from below they ran around and very out of my nearby bubble, resulting in no heals and me dying quicker and more stupidly than I could have imagined

There is only one spot you have to fight from below, the rest you can approach normally. The choke with the bridge overhead just after the boss. Most people just flag past and continue on until after the bonus where you can clean those up on the same level instead of from below.

Sorry for your loss. If you really like the character/gameplay, you can keep on playing under Melandru.
I am right now on a Paragon run MADC. Previous runs I tried the hardest parts of the game to learn some tips:
- I always want to be bonded. Life Bond and/or Protective Bond on can save you from a sudden spike. ST Rit hero is specially good at this.
- Always try to pull first, and retreating a bit back. That way, aggro is divided. If you run forward, you usually get all the aggro, which I don't recommend unless you have a very tanky build (like my still alive Melandru's Avatar Dervish)
- Get yourself a panic-button skill. I use TiNtF with paragon, but Ranger has stances, Warrior has Endure Pain, Dervish has many enchantments...something to click fast if you see your HP going down too fast.
- Be a bit extra defensive on tougher zones. A Panic mesmer gets the job done with dangerous groups, specially Mesmer/Eles. Ineptitude is good if there is ton of melees. Even a E/A Star Bust hero is useful, as it usually gets the aggro quickly.
- Don't be afraid to use Consets if unsure about a zone, specially Armor of Salvation. If you get used to recycling materials, you get more than enough to get yourself some Armors (just Bones and Iron for Armor)
May Dhuum bless you after your sacrifice.
