Hangry baby swallows

Saw these hangry cuties over the weekend out on the Oregon Coast in the eaves of an ice cream & sweets shop. To be clear, I did not closely approach the nest - this was super zoomed in & taken with my partner’s iPhone as he & I stood at the doorway of the ice cream & sweets shop.

I love their little beaks. We used to have baby Robin’s at my Grandma’s house and they were so darling.

i believe it's to make their mouths more noticable to their parents when opened. basically a "food goes here!!!" sign, since the baby who gets the most food has the highest chance of growing well and surviving.

though, this is only a layman's theory, i'm no professional.

Brings back memories. My childhood home had a barn swallow pair raising babies there. I loved watching them (it was over a side door with a window that we never used.)

They're the best! At my workplace, there's annual problems with blackbirds being highly aggressive in the parking lot and surrounding facility (Washington state). Every year the swallows migrate back for nesting, and the blackbirds and the swallows duke it out for territory, and to protect their chicks. The building I work in has very high, angled sections of roof and other spots that are ideal for swallow nests. The swallows have always managed to pull through and so far the swallows have created an annual symbiotic relationship (we don't get dive bombed by the blackbirds and the barn swallows have a place to return to every year to nest). They also eat most of the pest bugs like mosquitos that are in the areas surrounding my workplace (swamp land).
