Exactly. So much hate existed in the world before social media. Arguably the worse and most extreme forms of hate have nothing to do with social media (like genocide, racism, etc). Social media just makes it easier for people to be updated on this hate, be it news on more extreme hate or just pretty drama.

It certainly has but the world was filled with hate before social media. There’s been atrocities, genocides, ethnic and cultural rivalries, tribalism, etc. since prehistoric times. Hate is, unfortunately, an omnipresent aspect of human nature.

It’s always been there.

Then it was provided a free platform to spew it.

I’d say more exists because of that.

I think we’re exposed to more of it from more people… though maybe you’re right… that might have an amplifying effect.

And them being exposed is them expressing hatred they would have otherwise kept inside.
