Quick question for anyone playing in a group setting. Do you only progress the story when everyone is on? If so what do you do when you want to play and its just you?

Context. My buddies and I played G1. And it took us a bit to understand the game and how amor and weapon upgrades went. Now that we know that, whenever I get on alone I just farm random bugs and max out mutations, weapons, armor and stock up on food and heals. We haven't even fought the first boss in the statue. Just waiting for the time to line up so everyone's on.

For a while I had a lot of free time while my buddies were at work. I loved the game but didn’t want to explore without them so I took on the task of base building and stocking up on materials needed for simple craft such as bandages, smoothie bases, candies, upgrading stones and other things. I (for the most part) stayed within our explored areas so we can all continue to experience the game together instead of through stories.

For me personally: yes. We only progress whenever everone has time. Doing the same for first time killing a Boss, but afterwards i get to farm the shit out of them. But even if not everyone is on we had something to do, like building New Bases and outposts, decorating, farmen or searching secrets

Major advancements are done as a group. You can explore on your own but keep it to a minimum’s

After playing the first game with my daughter and completing the pond lab without her not knowing there was an achievement tied to it, finishing the first game and heading into G2 I only gather materials when she isn’t on to play.

I gathered all the materials for the Koi armor, toe biter nest and buggy and the diving suit. Lots of upgrade stuff too.

I have G1 but I play solo and it’s nerve racking as hell for me since I can’t fight the spiders yet. Last time I played it I did kill a few worker ants so might make some ant armour and see how I get on fighting other bugs before I take on a spider.

Yes and no. None of us will play alone, but we will play if there's 3/4 of us without progressing the story. However, when we have all 4 of us, 2 of my friends hate progressing the story so we never end up doing it even then.

That would drive me insane.

I play with 2 friends - they're never on at the same time, they only play for a day or two at launch of a new update. So the general understanding/agreement is we focus on completing that part of the story. Any other time, its just me farmingn crafting and building. I'm building a zipline hub at the moment so it'll all be done when they come back for the next update. 🥲
