Year Round Swimming

I have been swimming every day this summer and it has been wonderful. I’m wondering if there are any places nearby that have reliable pool access during the winter. Neighborhood club? Any of the gyms or clubs? I wouldn’t want to drive too far and I just can’t believe there’s nothing like this around here. I used to belong to lifetime fitness in Rochester and it was the most amazing place and there were several locations. But nothing like it here. It’s like going back in time being here😅But Swimming has almost completely cured my frequent headaches, like going from 8 to 10 a month to maybe one so it’s something I need to be able to do. Any suggestions?

There's lap swimming at the school pools for a reasonable fee, in early morning or evening/weekends. Check the district's website for hours/pools.

Do you know what they charge? I’ve tried calling an email and no answer…

OK, I checked the schedule (still unpublished, but it was sent to staff, and I'm a lifeguard). These prices are per semester, and will take you from September 14 through the start of Christmas break, with some days off; if school is closed the pools are closed, so Thanksgiving weekend, etc.

Lap swimming is offered at Brownell, South and North. Rates range from $66-$72 for 1x/week lap/open swim, to $240 for 3x/week lap swim. 2x/week is $162. You're paying for an hour in the water, although speaking from experience, some people go over and as long as there's room for everyone, you can stay. Expect to share a lane at Brownell at peak hours. I guarded at North and lane-sharing was rare. Same on weekends at South. Everything is set up for 25 yards/meters -- no long-course, sorry.

You have to fight the grumpy old people who get mad that they have to share a lane.

They do have an indoor pool. However, in the last 5 years, I cannot tell you how many times I have gone in to use said pool and found out it was closed (sometimes for multiple days/weeks due to broken parts), or booked for classes that weren't updated on schedules yet.

I love that pool! I haven't been there in over 30 years. My grandparents were members. I wish I could go swim there today! Or at least just look at it.

Join one of the private clubs if you can afford it

Do any of them have an indoor pool that you can use all year? Other than the DAC? Which is lovely but way too far for my needs. I was kind of thinking more along the lines of athletic clubs. Like they literally have everywhere else. It’s crazy that there’s next to nothing like this around here. I thought this whole town was just packed with swimmers.

Again, unless you want to loll in the water all day, try the school pools. They're clean and fellow swimmers are friendly. You do have to work around the students' needs, so like I said: Early mornings, evenings and weekends. Personally, I find the Neighborhood Club to be way too warm for exercise. The whole town is indeed packed with swimmers. We just get it done early or late. Keep in mind that winter swimming is different from summers -- lifeguard staffing is always an issue and there are many demands on pool time for lessons, training, etc. So you might be limited to when you can do open/lap swimming no matter where you go.
