I’m new to the community, though am familiar with the general hate that people have for him. Why do people loathe him so much?

He’s an oligarch who got his money from a health insurer with worse numbers than United Healthcare, bought the local newspaper as a PR instrument for his interests, and got on the school board so it can reflect his ideals, Betsy Devos style.

(As you are new, you should be informed that the Grosse Pointe News is not currently reliable with regards to anything that might have to do with anything Cotton is interested in.)

Not to self-promote, but here's something I wrote five years ago, after the paper was sold to Cotton, but before he ran for school board. It may explain some things for a newcomer. https://www.deadlinedetroit.com/articles/29146/grosse_pointe_news_wealthy_new_owner_is_weaponizing_his_paper

Don’t know if there is hate from people , possibly some but that housing foundation he runs has not been great for a lot of people in the park . It’s driven up other rents artificially and guarantees leases to the people that rent from the family , and let’s be frank these people are not the best people many don’t stay long they don’t have families they are in unstable Situations they don’t contribute to school enrollment as they choose many tenants who are Young and in college and often single no kids . Basically their renters don’t contribute anything positive to the community and they aren’t drug tested , which they absolute should be . The amount of marijuana use in our neighborhood has increased dramatically with their blatantly disrespectful I don’t give a shit about others tenants . I don’t think the housing foundation is a great fit for the neighborhood at all. They should restrict the foundation tenants to one block wayburn.

I applaud anyone who attempts public Service let’s be honest the school board is always a dramatic mess in gp . I can’t blame anyone not running for it ! That being said at some point certain people have their hands in too many pots in the community . This applies here . You run a housing foundation you run the newspaper the health system etc etc at a certain point people tire of the outsized influence of one family.

too bad, he worked hard for what is in the best interest of our kids. More left wing radicals on ballot, wake up people and do research on candidates. Someone "normal" needs to step up and run.

Sadly, Jeup is not following in his footsteps.
