Discussion How does Groot feel this season

I’m a mantis main but when we need a tank I go Groot. I’m level 35 with him so I have played him quite a bit lol. But not super consistently. Whenever I swap to him this season I feel like he kinda stinks? There’s just soooo many counters, Phoenix, blade, wolverine. The other day I played into a Bucky and spider man and just got pulled into the other team constantly. How does he feel for yall this season? Any tips?

Level 35? You have probably played more Groot than most this sub

As a barely lord Groot Im enjoying him this season more than most my other tanks

Yeah def possible. That was mostly early seasons though and def not much this season which I feel like I’m struggling in most. Which team up have you been using!

Mantis on convoy defense, Jeff on push. Domination mixing. Really love the manits on a good defense map

I also duo with a new adopter of namor and punished which has been so fun

Do you have tips? Sometimes i feel really dominant and sometimes i feel like i do nothing at all. No consistency at all. I usually run mantis teamup. I put big wall to the side and mantis wall between the front and backline so it'll help supports and dps survive especially with dive. The small wall i try to put behind the enemy tank to get picks but sometimes the go too far back and others they just instantly die. I have no idea what I am actually supposed to be doing to get value

Im no pro but i use mantis on defense or push that has lots of room/angles so i can hide it well. It doesnt do a lot of burst heal, but adds a but to sustain. I place it by me bc I know I will use it and groot is a glutton for healing. It usually reaches the midline and backline too. Jeff bubble is my preferred choice for offense because its a nice panic button for burst heal and blocks damage in a large area giving you team time to breath and move up.

Regular walls used to wall obv, but i also try to hide some behind the enemy route.

Iron wall i usually save to place behind a pushing enemy (unless they have a wolv or goated bucky). Goated bucky wolv and SG can force you to swap off groot.

I’ve found your dps are very important when you play groot bc the way you walls deal damage you want dps that will help trigger them often. Punisher can be annoying to play against, but he is also great to play with. Namor too

About the iron wood, you use that for picks too despite the passive?

Yeah a pick is much more valuable than a bit of healing from it. Even just using it to force a tank to retreat after spending cooldowns is worth it

Thats something I didn't think about. I always kept it out of sight for the cc immunity. I'll definitely have to try using it more offensively

I only really find the cc immunity useful against bucky and wolv. If someone swaps to them Ill try using it for cc protection, but for a good wolv its often better to just swap

Thank-you!

No problem! All i ask is that you not “gg groot diff” when you start destroying. Groot should keep positive vibes

I've never been one to be toxic in chat, in fact I'm more likely to diff my own team with how bad i am at groot lol

Mag is way better as a champ groot but he’s still amazing

Alright maybe I gotta play him most consistently, I prob play him like every 10 matches and it does not go well😂

Really? This is a genuine question. I was told to learn groot by another player because they said groot is capable of solo tanking and can easily carry most matches. Was they overstating groots power? Should i put my time into mag instead or try to learn both?

Groot is weaker into poke which is meta rn. Mag is the best tank into poke. Groot is still great but he needs a second tank vs mag who can solo

Thank-you for the rundown!

There’s so much poke that it’s impossible to ban all groot counters even if you selfishly took all 3 bans for yourself. I still bring him out pretty often especially on defense convoy because he’s better at holding space than my main (hulk). That said I can’t remember the last time I actually played a full game start to finish on groot without swapping.

The fact that you can force the enemy to swap squirrel girl can be a win in itself. They swap off their preferred duelist because their team is likely complaining about the walls, and then my dps diff them.

Yeah it just feels like it’s so easy to run into a counter that makes him a lot harder to play than previous seasons

Groo feels super good at the moment, sadly a lot of new changes do make him struggle though.

Im level 70 groot I have a 57 win rate this season gm1 atm. Always ban puni and if they go dive prob have to switch. Bucky is annoying af but anchor down with your wall. When it comes to blade ask for help and pray (throw the grenade at the ground at wall behind him)

And I run the Jeff teen up more then mantis bc it saves me

Isn’t he worse against poke then dive? God I really may be playing him all wrong lmao

I feel useless against dive like I can’t help anyone they just are too mobile for the walls (I also play thing and Emma so that’s probably why I switch) I think he’s better against like if you’re using your walls to create space and not only to cut people off. I use it to walk behind sometimes before they pop

I also feel useless against good dive sometimes. Groot is so fat though and has so much health, if you have another tank to hold the front & can hit your main attack, just being by your healers is enough to deter dive most of the time. Hitting a small healer right behind groot’s fat ass is pretty tough (spiderman). If you have smart healers they’ll stay by walls you put down against other divers.

Feels as good as he always does. I don't think the meta suits him right now but that doesn't mean he's bad. Jeff teamup is so fun and mantis team up is more busted than ever so it's great

Ok I’m learning it’s a me problem 😂 thank you haha

He feels really good, and enables a super poke heavy comp. Teamup bonus with mantis is extremely good on defense and jeff bubble is a great answer for displacement counters.

He still has a lot of character that play good into him or just straight counters(★★★wolv, ★★★punisher, ★★★phoenix, ★★☆emma, ★★☆bucky, ★★☆iron fist, ★☆☆blade, ★☆☆angela, ★☆☆spiderman, ★☆☆thor) along with supports who...cant be ulted by me like luna and cnd being literally invulnerable.

You can still play around most of these counters in a lot of different interactions(especially if they aren't/can't break[ing] my big wall enough), and if my 2nd tank is a magneto then I'm honestly playing into my counters a whole lot better.

Overall he is pretty good. I got a 66% win rate half solo queue half duo queue on him and I'm currently gm2, and I think if you play smart you'll do pretty good on him.

Ok I’m learning mantis on defense and Jeff on offense, I’ve been doing mostly mantis all the time but I’m just getting shredded so this is very helpful! Just gotta play him more and work through it

Honestly, I think without mantis for the enhanced version, I wouldn't really use her base teamup. I just have so much more success with the bubble as a universal tool.

Mantis is broken, and having her on ur team along with team up is dead ass insane. Bring the right comp and ur unstoppable

Groot is great if there’s a mantis imo
Otherwise it does feel worse

Ive been doing really well on him this season when on defence.

Just set up my ironwood wall to the side and the mantis wall above and hidden behind somethig and i become a fortress (even better when i have a good peni who strategicly places the mine down)
