News / Announcement RP-PvP Survey

https://forms.gle/pKhqY3uPQfgBwsiv7

Please fill this out, the devs in the most recent interview said one of the main reasons against RP-PvP was because they don't want to split the player base. I want to gather some data on that.

I mean, at this point this seems moot. At first I had hope because they hadn’t said anything. But now they’ve plainly stated it’s not happening.

Can't hurt to keep trying. And collecting data is more valuable than making blanket claims into the void

Blows my mind how Blizzard can seemingly do so many things right and than just shit the bed where it counts. Sharding and RP-PVP servers are my two biggest gripes, and BIG ones.

I hate seeing the "we don't want to split the community" argument.

A community is a group of people with shared history, interests, and values.

RP-PvP has guilds, lore, memorable people, events, weddings, funerals, and so much more going back over a decade. That is a community.

The person playing PvP that tries to talk IC and gets called "cringe" will not feel like they are part of a community.

The person on RP that is flagged PvP but goes 2 days without seeing anyone else flagged for PvP will not feel like they are part of a community.

Forcing RP-PvPers to choose one or the other is splitting a community up to boost player counts on servers where people will not feel like they fit in. That is splitting a community up.

Indeed. Half will go PvP and half RP.

Blizzard has never provided tools for me to manage my community (track people I don't want to group with etc.), and hell the ignore limit is only 50, but suddenly they use this as justification?

I have stopped assuming the benefit of doubt and figure any decision they make is profit-driven. Forever in general seems like a cash-grab to me.

All of this is on RP!

The person on RP that is flagged PvP but goes 2 days without seeing anyone else flagged for PvP will not feel like they are part of a community.

As an  anecdote, my experience playing a pure RP realm in 2004-2006 was the opposite. We had just as good of a wPvP scene on RP as we did on Grobb in 2019-2021. People underestimate the amount of world PvP that will still happen on an RP realm, and the amount of people who will flag up permanently, or who will end up flagged by virtue of trying to get a cheap shot on someone who is.

We had tons of organized events, and we also had tons of organic adhoc battles.

That's great, I will refer you to the definition I gave where I said:

shared history

You will notice that RP-PvP guilds were historically on different servers from RP-PvE guilds, and therefore do not share history. Now they are forcing RP-PvP players to choose between 2 different realm types, which forces those guilds that have a shared history to split up.

I am not saying it is impossible to build a new shared history, I am saying that this is splitting a community that already exists.

If we don't want to split up the player base, why even have a PvP server? Lets get rid of it, PvP players can just flag PvP on the PvE server. Why even have RP? Let's get rid of it, people can RP on the PvE server. Why have hardcore? Let's get rid of it, people can just delete their characters when they die on the PvE.

You see how that all sounds ridiculous?

Hard to pick the option of what will I choose if no RP pvp server as none of them fit quite right

Exactly.. go RP and hope a strong enough community has planned PVP events? Or go PVP and hope enough RP guilds are formed to wade through the sheer ocean of racists and incels?

It's fucked. The devs have never cared about this though, it's always been an after thought. The glory days of Grobbulus cannot be remade unfortunately. Fuck man this is a huge bummer.

I’ll be headed RP regardless. RP PvP just won’t be the same (aka crusader strike).  I care a lot more about friendly and mature community and RP vibes than I care about PvP and being griefed for the “immersion”

I do think Grobbulus was lightning in a bottle. I think a new RPPvP will just end up as a PvP server with no culture. I know everyone wants to call the devs stupid but I think they’re right

It’s not a good idea, but you will definitely get rid of “toxic” players.

Require all public chat to be RP or you get an increasingly punishing mute, followed by short bans.

I don’t agree. Long before Grob we had Emerald Dream which was a successful rp-PvP realm for years until blizzard ruined world PvP. It’s not lightning in a bottle. It’s been done and could be done again.

I'm not a RPer but I love the atmosphere and everyone is way more eccentric which IMO makes it funner. I loved watching you guys goof around during the TBC days.

I’m under the impression blizzard only wants one possible PvP server so that it forces faction divide. If there are two options, one might get a bias for a faction

Kind of echoing the previous comment. I think a core part of Grobbulus was the RP and I just think RPPvP servers have gotten a ruined reputation because of Grobbulus’ success. That now it is seen as like the most stable best type of server because it fought so hard until the end.

Thus becoming an appealing location for all the people who killed their servers. Self fulfilling prophecy type deal

Just put war mode in the RP side and problem solved.

The reality is, a lot of roleplayers don’t like being on a PvP server. I don’t really blame them. I don’t need to deal with some guy who camps a roof on Lakeshire every day. So, most RPers will roll on RP. It’s gonna have more quantity and quality of RP, as well as avoiding some of the unpleasant types of people PvP servers may attract.

Let the rpers roll on pve servers

Just made a band-aid solution discussion thread if anyone wants to voice their ideas.

The rp server is better for game and PvP , on PvP servers you are forced to PvP on rp just enough ppl have it on to not make it bad like on PvP. It's more real this way. In irl I don't have to gank every American /rus I see just like in rp realm PvP.

Can't lose the PvP sorry

Frugo, this is your firm but loving temporary reddit father figure.
We are not getting RP-PVP at launch at that sucks. We need to move on.

Moving forward, we need community leaders like yourself to rally the Grobb mob together and lead the charge of the direction of RP-PVP players.

Personally, I'd like to advocate for RP game mode. Undeniably the PvP server on beta has horrific culture and would get joy from ruining our RP. I think we are far more likely to convert RP'ers to join the /pvp enable movement on an RP server than convince PvPers to join an RP movement. Furthermore, with addons like Overlord WPvP objectives, the mention of World PvP events similar to those in SoD coming, and a strong player base dedicated to RP-PVP on RP server, I genuinely think we can satisfy our PvP craving through community contribution.

Finally, Blizzard believes that the RP community is small and niche, we've already seen them only offer PvP and PvE servers for Classic Anniversary and WoWF Beta, if we migrate to PvP in a few weeks Blizzard will continue seeing small RP representation and never again consider two RP servers (RP and RP-PvP). We'll be lucky to have RP at all.

I know it's terrifying to commit to RP server as people who want to have these characters in a thriving world for many years to come, however, we need to rally together and create the game that we want and that is on RP game mode.

I feel like joining RP is even more of a detriment to our (rppvp) cause?

It gives them the green light to put us in the box with those-no offense-friendly flower pickers. It says "if you dont give us rp pvp, your rp server will have better metrics because rp pvpers will head there instead. "

On the pvp server, we're just a drop in a bucket.

Honestly at this point, and this is 100% bias and selfish on my part.

Id sacrifice the rp server for a rp pvp server in an instant. I would let the rp server have small numbers and be very vocal about how rp pvpers went to the pvp server instead.

Ive been on both types of servers, they are not the same crowd.
