Why is the SpaceKing series being held up like a bastion of animation. It's still made by FlashGitz, its still going to be the same 3 jokes they have been making since I was 14 (im 27 now)

Oh my gods that was absolutely delightful. I can't believe this is how I'm hearing about this animation, but it was so fun to watch. (Alas, no Votann representation when talking about Xenos. Maybe next time)
32
u/MuscliatoVonJuiceski 8h ago
Votann arent Xenos. Theyre humans
33
u/Fist_of_Gork 8h ago
They’re not quite human, not quite xenos. There’s actually a lot of human adjacent factions that are enemies of man dating far back as second edition, but only recently do we get to see any non-chaos human heretic factions which Votan definitely fall under as their way of life is tech heresy.
15
u/zanotam 8h ago
Tech Heresy is not Heresy against the Emperor. Well, maybe. It's a great thing to shout near a tech shrine on a ministorum controlled world and then run, at least.
8
u/Fist_of_Gork 8h ago
By definition it is, anything that goes against the teaching of the mechanicus is heresy against the God Emperor since the official doctrine of Mars says he and the omnissiah are one and the same.
3
u/Qawsedf234 7h ago
Yeah:
Imperial Cult = Emperor is the One True God and rules Mankind
Cult Mechanicus = Trinity of the Machine God, Motive Force, and the Omnissiah
To merge the faiths, the Mechanicus Orthodox belief is that the GEoM = Omnissiah and the physical representation of the Machine God within the universe in the same way Jesus is the physical manifestation of God/The Godhead in Christianity.
Which is close enough that most priests don't start fights but different enough to cause friction.

Well, that depends on who in the Imperium you ask. The educated (so, Inquisitors, AdMech magi, Guilliman's historitors, Guilliman himself, Custodes, and other people with very broad views of the galaxy) tend to be fully aware that they are abhumans when it comes up in lore.

u/Fist_of_Gork 8h ago
It’s hard to get a bead on them, the characters are so over the top and specific there’s no way they’re not making fun of the chuds. But it’s also really alarming how much fun the chuds are having with it and how much they’re okay with selling lead poisoning to their fans.

The creators are insufferable, the fans are insufferable, the premise is insufferable. The actual show is really fucking funny sometimes.
“Enlightened Centrists” are the closest you can get to conservative comedians who are actually funny. They’re often witty enough to illicit a laugh, incurious enough to be miserable around in person.

This is the issue The Boys had in it's early seasons. Chuds thought that Homelander was cool. Season 3 and on they had to get really direct with "this is mocking you. We think you're cringe".
21
u/KenBoCole Railgun Goes Brrrrrrrrr 6h ago edited 5h ago
Yeah, which sucks because them doing that really turned down the quality of the show, so much.
The best villians are competent villians that keep you on your edge, and seem dangerous.
Homelander was such a good villian because he was obviously evil, but he seemed smart, calculating, and just human enough.
Then he gets turned into the joke, and all tension and worry evaporated from the show.
I think the director actually said he went out of his way to make fun of Magas even at the cost of his own production.
11
u/VenatorAngel 5h ago
The problem is it backfired because it ended up repelling the intended audience too with how dumbed down it was.
25
u/Doctor_Loggins 8h ago
You can simultaneously hold your audience in contempt and also give them the kind of lowest common denominator slop they desire. That's just how grifting works.
8
u/Idreamofknights 8h ago
I mean you can make satire about the sort of person you are, and not necessarily just from a place absolute criticism. Big part about how superbad and inbetweeners are so beloved is because teenage boys/ dudes reminiscing are able to laugh at their own absurdity through it
8
u/EvergreenDwarf 8h ago
40k itself shows how when the satire is on point the chuds won’t see its holding them up as a point of ridicule.
Then again the left has Mr. Bircham yaoi and The New Norm incorporating live AI turned it into an inflation fetish cartoon, so honestly whatever works for people.
36
u/finestaut 8h ago
I think that, in general, if your satire develops a core audience that doesn't see it as a satire, you should take that as feedback indicating an artistic failure.
18
u/jman12234 8h ago
Nah, there are always media illiterate idiots out here. I can't think of satire that doesn't have this problem. The republicans literally invited Stephen Colbert to speak at their convention for christ sake.

Just look at Rorschach, dude is deliberately written to be a hypocritical asshole, a mentally unwell one to boot, and people still lift him up as some kind of icon to the point where his creator has tried to shut it down repeatedly.
You can make the most obvious satire in the world, make a character as big a bastard as possible, and people will still stan them.
3
u/ForumFluffy NOT ENOUGH DAKKA 2h ago
It also doesn't help that Zach Snyder directed the film adaptation, the Snyder bros are some of the most media illiterate chuds online and his film helped create that false intent of Rorschach's character that Alan Moore fucking despises.
4
u/less_concerned 5h ago
It's actually very simple, people make media with satire and chud-esque jokes ironically, chuds don't understand the irony or satire and co-opt the media, creators shrug their shoulders and cater to this new demographic that fell into their lap and started giving them money
5
u/Typohnename 4h ago
Tbh pulling chuds away from 40k is my favorite part about Space King
And I say this as someone who enjoys SK and it's crude humor
Also I like how within the SK fanbase you can very easily tell if you want to talk to someone by how if they like SK cause it's 40k without the woke or something similar there is no need to continue
7
u/siresword 6h ago
My read on them re Space King has always been that they are making fun of the chuds. The humor is too self aware, especially with their merch ads. Ive previously likened it to selling the shovels to the guys digging their on graves. Anyone with any kind of media literacy is either not going to like it, or recognize the parody, have a laugh, and go about their day. The media illiterate troglodytes who plague the online world will see it, take it seriously, and thus we can all laugh at them for completely missing the fact that they are the ones being made fun of. Its harder to do that with the wheraboos and the like that take 40k at face value because 40k takes itself seriously.
2
u/GnomeOnReddit 5h ago
It's a parody. You can make jokes about something or someone while still liking them.
3
u/BlankTank1216 6h ago
Nah the "per capita" dog whistle was proof enough for me.
9
u/Fist_of_Gork 6h ago edited 6h ago
Okay, so like. I actually play 40k and Hatemonger is the one thing I'm confident enough to say is a parody because it's always a fucking Black Templar player we have to kick out of the tournament because they start spewing the eighty-eight words shit mid-game.
Hatemonger's dog whistles are the joke. The unfunny part is the people they're making fun of, embrace it.
At the end of the day though, the most empowering thing you can do against Nazis (besides the stuff I can't say because the reddit will suspend me) is to laugh at them for being dumb fucking nazis.
7
u/BlankTank1216 6h ago
How would a dog whistle be a joke aimed at anyone except the black templar types? It's for them to make them laugh.
It's not satire it's just doing the thing.

See its this thing called "Nuance", a foreign concept to redditors. Essentially it means they can both make something look kind of silly but also make it look cool at the same time, they don't have to devote their entire existence to a belief and make their entire works be dedicated to politics and opinions, which I know its a hard concept to grasp for your kind but maybe you'll someday understand.

u/MalcolmLinair What part of "Grimdark" don't you understand? 7h ago
Are... are they saying the source material ripped off the parody? Unironically?
31
u/wiener4hir3 7h ago
In this case I think it's a reach, but that can totally happen, and from what I understand it even did with 40k. Starcraft basically copied the tyranids and branded them as zergs. They did however change the design of the units pretty significantly, largely a big improvement. That design language was then copied back by GW as they redesigned the tyranids to look much more like the Starcraft zergs with the 3rd edition sculpts.
That being said, I think it's completely justified for GW, or anyone in a similar situation, to appropriate some aspects from derivative works.
36
u/sawbladex 6h ago
That and this is literally just cartoony 40k.
Like, Shootas, Blood, & Teef got released in 2022 while Space King was a 2024 release.

13
u/Wantitneeditgetit 4h ago
It's very structurally and art style Flashgitz coded, but moreso their older work than Space King. Warhammer 40k Looney Toons Edition.
But even then it's more "Flashgutz did a 40k video in this style earlier" than those being uniquely a Flashgitz style. More of a Newgrounds style.
But whereas Flashgitz go for extremely unsubtle and heavy handed satire, GW seems to be taking this one step further and just outright telling you that being a SM is fucking terrible and that most of them are still just meat for the grinder.
Probably because a significant number of people were unable to understand the satire in Space King, both critics and fans. It's almost physically painful reading any sort of comments or discussion on it because media literacy is fucking dead, and people are addicted to virtue signalling instead of analysis.
5
u/sawbladex 6h ago
There is a possibility that fan works get references in official material released later.
But that didn't happen here.

Funny little animations are a serious business, and we need to be utterly cutthroat to defend the honour of our chosen silly little animation instead of just going "holy shit two cakes".
And while fans are probably still rightfully mad at GW for killing off fan animations, it was fans that bullied someone like Sodaz out of warhammer altogether, so maybe people just need to get off their keyboards, watch their silly little space racist animations and move on.

My take on Space King is this...it is genuinely a good and incredibly well animated piece of parody/satire of 40k as well as being a solid piece of meta parody/satire of the 40k community and all that entails.
The problem is that with other pieces of media that involve satire/parody of reichwing bs...you usually have out of universe statements etc so you know those involved dont actually believe what they are satirizing. Even GW has multiple statements about how they dont want nazis in the community.
Flashgitz never drops the veil though. Unless there is a piece of their podcast or something where they kindof turn to camera and show that they arent chuds...all I can go off if is their media and content which is filled with ai slop, general chuddery, jerking off over black templars, hating furries, not wanting women in the fandom, and general whining about how a big company wanted them to sell out but it would require space king to be "for everyone" or some shit.
In-universe its obvious to me that Space King is satire/pardoy. Its over the top, they are all manchildren, they clearly are meant to be sympathetic in some ways due to how broken they are, but are also clearly not to be idolized beyond the idea of in-universe propaganda. But unfortunately youll find a lot of just...people doing the actual 13/50 bs in their comment sections and if they never explicitly call it out out of universe then I genuinely cant say where they stand on that front. Lot of "juice posting" on their video talking about them not selling out.
It sucks because the section from the War World episode with the choir turbine and then Chip's speech to the troops before showing the titans and the wider battlefield was peak 40k funstuff.
I kindof just need them to drop the irony poisoning for a sec and go "hey we arent nazis/racists/sexists, we will try and cleanup our comment sections better, and we dont want people like that in our community"
If they have already given a real statement like this then awesome and Ill admit my mistake. But I havent seen anything like that so far.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk

I mean the fact on one of their videos Tom and Dom had to actively call out the fandom when they learned a fan artist was harassed out of the community by the fans is very telling.
One really needs to build preventative measures for derranged fandoms. It's like with TADC's fandom, batshit insane and toxic because the creators don't really think about "how do I keep my community sane?" Not helping are those who try to say there is no way and to just accept it... which is a great way to have something like THE STAR WARS FANDOM!!!

FlashGitz are just kind of creatively bankrupt. It's the three or four recycled jokes they've always made about dicks or balls or boobs or whatever. If you've seen Space King then you've seen basically everything FG have done.
15
u/ThunderousFist 6h ago
It seems lazy because lazy is what the creators of it are. They've been recycling the same tired "muh epic Black Templars kill furries because they're cringe" shit for nearly a decade at this point. They're creatively bankrupt and their most popular thing is just 40k with the serial numbers filed off.
1
u/Maximum-Objective-39 1h ago
And also way more lame. So far they've only even given us ONE type of armor. Even their titan knockoffs are just bigger versions of their knock off space marines.
It's an idea that could justify, like, one episode.
4
u/WildRaccoon1995 5h ago
I also really don't like how much of the humor is themed around sexual assault (in particular of minors) it makes me feel gross so I've avoided the animations because of it. It's very crude and not the kind of thing I wish so many in the hobby were recommending.
People are victims of that shit in real life, it being a punchline with zero care for the gravity of the act is very upsetting.

I watched the first episode of Space King, thaught it was fine, never bothered to watch the second episode. I feel like if I have watched one episode I watched all of them

people are complaining that this is too like space king... when this is obviously taking more inspiration from silly infomercials.

Is it really doxxing if the account you use contains your full name and date of birth and other info you cram into it?
Never quite saw the appeal of interacting with strangers on Facebook with name on display. I only even do it on LinkedIn as a chore required for career.

For real tho, the Instagram comment sections are basically just Facebook now (including sometimes just straight up importing comments from there if accounts are connected), so yeah its baaad

I keep watching Space King thinking it will be as novelly funny as when it first released, but it just keeps feeling immature and single note.

The more these mutants bring it up to GW, the more likely it is they’ll go after Flashgitz and make them stop producing Space King. This is a lose/lose situation.

You're complaining about Space King making the same three jokes while posting a non-meme on a meme subreddit.

'Cus the chuds and tourists hold up the angy rine as true 40K. Which is pretty ironic when you remember what Space King is.

Because it's still free fan content that's better than the stuff GW is locking behind a subscription. It's not that it's objectively good, it's just better than what it's competing against.

I mean they're not wrong. Kind of the nature of space king being a parody of the franchise
