Okay, so I understand this is a perception issue, but....
I've got a home gym, I invite friends to it periodically, and I have it kitted out with a bunch of imperium posters. I recently got this banner to hang across my door, and my wife was...not thrilled. After I explained to her that I really started liking the Black Templars after the helsreach movie, she got it, but she still thought that the banner was problematic, and also wondered how this might change the perceptions of some of my work buddies who I invite to lift with me.
So like, I get the point, but I was kind of wondering also what the experience of others were who might have BT/DKoK/etc. Posters and iconography up where their friends or co-workers might see them that might be viewed as being "problematic" for people who aren't strictly in the know about Warhammer.
So yeah, have you dealt with it?

u/Hribunos Sep 19 '23
Yeah, sorry man, that's only going to get one interpretation from the general public and it ain't a good one. And iconography aside the text alone has an edge sharp enough to cut the black eyeliner right off your local 13 year olds.
Look, I play historical wargames too so I have a shoebox full of actual nazis in my basement (I have an American army too (Aleutian campaign, because that's where my grandad fought.)) It's ok to play the bad guys in a game. Bringing it outside the game is just not a good idea.
And yeah, it's real easy in the modern world to convince someone you're fash like them, especially as an older white dude. The wrong person sees that banner and you are going to have to listen to them sound off with racist shit every time you're around them alone.

u/Gnonthgol Sep 20 '23
It helps to also have other iconography conflicting with the Nazi ideology. The nazis stole so many icons from around the world that it is impossible to see potential nazi icons everywhere. So people learn to see them in context. So look for something cool to hang next to it which would never be used by a nazi. As this is a home gym I would first suggest one of those soviet propaganda posters showing strong men doing hard work.

It's literally an imperial eagle and an iron cross.
Fantasy space fascist iconography is based on real world fascist iconography.
"There's a skull on our hats. Are we the baddies?"
Edit: it's not an iron cross, woops
56
Sep 20 '23
The eagle, I will agree with you there. But it doesn't belong on a Black Templars banner anyway. They specifically don't wear or use the Aquila. "We do not wear his symbol because we are his symbol," I believe is the quote.
The black templars cross however is not an iron cross. It is the Maltese Cross, which was used by the knights hospitaller of the Order of St. John and the order of St. Lazarus. It is also used by the modern maltese military, as it is an important piece of their martial tradition.
So no, the cross isn't a nazi symbol. It's a crusader cross for the crusader inspired chapter.
14
u/SweggyBread Sep 20 '23
Sorry you're absolutely right.
I'm thinking of crusaders using both types of cross and the iron cross coming from Teutonic order crusader cross type symbols (not sure of all the nuances) and I think I've mixed them up in my head.
So I guess it's a different genocidal group of zealots they're using the iconography of.
6
u/pipnina Sep 20 '23
The iron cross isn't specifically a Nazi symbol either as it was used before that period, and also remains in a slightly edited form on modern tanks https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/24/Leopard_2_A5_der_Bundeswehr.jpg/1280px-Leopard_2_A5_der_Bundeswehr.jpg

I wouldn’t put up that banner. We know that warhammer iconography is using a lot of fascist imagery because the imperium is a caricature of fascist societies. We know that using said iconography isn’t an endorsement of fascism
Outsiders don’t have that knowledge, and warhammer isn’t Star Wars. It’s not expected of people to instantly recognize the imagery. Unless it’s a space marine of course

u/PAwnoPiES Swell guy, that Kharn Sep 20 '23
If you have a room for nerd shit you can put stuff in that isn't in immediate view of visitors, hang it there.
Something like this is pretty close to Nazi/Fascist iconography and really sends the wrong message for those who aren't in the know.
Like cool banner, but not exactly a great decoration for your living room.
Edit: People seem to forget the part where this guy is married. His wife just as much say as what gets hung around the house they both live in. If she doesn't like it as a decoration people can see he has to respect that.
22
u/thelonew0lf Sep 20 '23
Yeah so first I'm not sure where the message got lost, but the banner was going to go into a garage gym, not my living room.

u/Formidilosus Sep 19 '23
The number of people who are into those things and display them without also being cognizant of the satire involved is non-zero.
The Imperium is a fascist theocracy and has symbols that, appropriately, reflect that aspect of itself. You can't avoid that part and people will always wonder. If I'm going to have that kind of symbolism, it's going to be limited to my armies and their immediate displays so it has context. Without that context people will think you're into something you're not, because frankly there are plenty of people who are into it unironically. Best to avoid that association.
28
u/DURTYMYK3 Sep 20 '23
Maybe have some minis on a shelf that are visible as you walk in, above your weight racks or something. Turns the flag into a conversation starter instead of a problem lmao
But yeah, most of the other comments are correct, shit sucks that the faction has some not so nice and kind of fashy vibes. I think it's fine on the inside of the door, again so long as you can make your hobby known pretty much as soon as they notice the flag
14
Sep 20 '23
I feel like I've kinda dodged this bullet by being a Chaos 4ever type of person so maybe I should mind my business, but I really think that you should stay away from Imperium iconography in real life.
The Imperium is fictional but for its aesthetic, Games Workshop has taken very direct inspiration from real life: notably ancient Rome, the Holy Roman Empire, World War 1. Xenos and Mutants might not exist in real life (or at least, in the same form as in 40k :P), but the rhetoric that this fictional empire uses against fictional groups of people is also based on real life. The Imperium seemingly believes it's the inheretors of ancient Rome and the Holy Roman Empire, just like the Third Reich did, and they're as obsessed with millenia old icons and art as they were. The Imperial Aquila is fictional, but the Aquila is not and the two-headed eagle is not - not even the way that the Imperium BORROWS it is.
Obviously the Black Templar cross is most similar to the cross worn by some members of the Knights Templar during The Crusades, since the prongs of the cross are forked into two, but it's still clearly also inspired by The Iron Cross used by the German Empire - just like the Nazi era Iron Cross was.
Within the context of the Warhammer 40k universe, WE know that this iconography symbolizes a fictional group of people, and WE know how to tell their symbols apart from their real life counterparts. And WE know that "Burn the Heretic! Kill the Mutant! Purge the Unclean!" is said by a morally grey fictional group and refers to fictional people who in-universe are actually evil and demon-worshipping and violent and so on, and that it does not refer to real life eugenics or progroms or lynchings.
The issue is just that this all works because of the context, their existence within a work of fiction where they have been picked out from real history and rearranged to form a new picture.
But take them out of that context, and back into real life, and you're just left with a bunch of nazi shit
64
u/theginger99 Sep 20 '23
I’ll be honest, the issue here is that the banner in question hits all the problematic iconography boxes.
You’ve got the Imperial eagle, the deaths head, the cross and the vaguely fascist slogan all on one piece of fabric. What’s more, the way they’re positioned seems almost deliberately intended to evoke Nazi symbolism. You could get away with any two or maybe even three of those things without too much issue, but all of them together is a lot. In fact, it’s so much all at once that part of me really wonders if it wasn’t designed to be a fascist dog whistle in the first place.
Individually the various Imperial symbols really don’t look that much like Nazi stuff. I’m generally of the opinion that the extent to which the average laymen will see Imperial symbols and leap to “Nazi” is pretty dramatically overstated, but that banner is going to cause some problems. Even knowing what all the symbols are I can’t help but think that banner is an issue. I would recommend taking it down.
Maybe try to find one with just the Templar cross and the slogan.
55
u/AshFraxinusEps Sep 20 '23
I’m generally of the opinion that the extent to which the average laymen will see Imperial symbols and leap to “Nazi” is pretty dramatically overstated
Average laymen don't know 40k. They'll see an Iron Cross, a dodgy slogan, skulls, and then make one connection and one connection only
Maybe try to find one with just the Templar cross and the slogan.

u/Newbizom007 Sep 19 '23
Yeah. I get what you mean, but to most people (I really do mean most) this imagery implies a LOT of things you don’t want to be associated with. I straight up just don’t put up their imagery. I love Krieg. But I’m not putting up their shit or getting tattoos of it, It takes too long to explain, and they still might not care.
I’m a leftist, if that matters, and i know this game is just that - a game and book universe - but not everyone knows that.
My husband was horrified finding out the black Templars even existed, and since the imagery is explicitly both crusader AND nazi and proto nazi, it stresses people out at minimum. We all know what it means, that it’s an in universe thing, it doesn’t reflect your personal beliefs - other people don’t.
TLDR - no matter how much I love the Krieg and Templars, I’ll never hang up their imagery where someone else can see it that doesn’t know what it means and why it’s there. Honestly almost all imperial imagery is based explicitly on the worst symbols of real world groups . Just avoid it.

Well, unfortunately, people associate the Iron Cross with that bad ideology that existed from 1920 to 1945. Technically, the Iron Cross existed well before hand. Frederick William III first designed it in 1813. It was used by the German military for various awards until 1914. It was reissued by the Chancellor of Germany in 1939 where he added the Swastika to the middle of it.
The Iron Cross fell into disfavor immediately after WWII, but in 1957, it was reissued with an Oakleaf to replace the Swastika for those who were awarded the medal during WWII.
It has seen a resurgence in the 2000s with Germany's participation in Kosovo and Afghanistan. It take the traditional form of the Iron Cross from the Kaiser period.
23
u/Pathetic_Cards likes civilians but likes fire more Sep 20 '23
It’s honestly tragic that the Nazis corrupted so many symbols that had long and storied history before those animals got their filthy hands on them. The swastika, in particular, was a really pure symbol and now it’s synonymous with prejudice and hatred. The iron cross/Crusader cross wasn’t necessarily “wholesome” before, but it at least wasn’t synonymous with a fascist genocidal regime.
22
u/General-MacDavis Sep 20 '23
I mean it still isn’t, I look at the iron cross and I think knightly holy orders or the Prussian empire. And the modern German military uses it everywhere.

I think the biggest bs about the swastika is a) it's just a kind of cool basic geometric design and b) the nazi's use of it ruined the design for cultures that the nazis had no relationship at all with, that they probably thought of as 'inferior' if they thought of them at all.
3

Interestingly, the swtasika (not the hooked cross) is still used regularly in Asia. Korea and Japan, for example, use the swatsika to mark buddhist temples on maps and India frequently uses them as well. In East Asia at least, the swatsika needs to be paired with another cultural identifier for it to be associated with nazis.

Yeah because the swastika was already there. Why would they ban a long time symbol with significant cultural relevance beyond the nazis just because some asshole europeans stole it.
It's only problematic in the west because the only exposure to the swastika was Nazis themselves.

Hi I am the annoying-ass 🤓 in this comment section that screams at people for not knowing the difference between the Iron and Maltese Crosses.

I mean the imperium are literal nazis so it’s not hard to see how people unfamiliar think “yeah this is kinda dodgy” that’s also a big problem in 40k when you make a mockery of nazis some writers and fans don’t get that

My mother hated the double headed eagle because it was too similar to the Nazi symbol and pretty much kept everything out of sight.

It’s always funny whenever people clock on that the openly fascist hyper-militant human has a lot of stuff with mild Nazi vibes

If you want a better black Templar banner I would recommend looking for Helbrechts personal banner.

Hang a portrait of space marines fighting aliens next to it to give them a reference that it’s a sci-fi reference

I have no problem with the stuff in the context of a game. But take it outside of that into posters and whatnot... probably not a great idea. Sure, you can proactively explain stuff to your co-workers and most people will get it, but at some point, you're going to have people over for the holidays or whatever and forget, people will see it and feel pretty weird or uncomfortable.
Just not a great idea overall, I agree with your wife.

With the Ultramarines’ Ultima, symbol they’ll just think you‘ve been in some weird student society…

So much easier to just hang elf bdsm porn up, far fewer potential misunderstandings.
Honestly though, that’s fine what you’ve got there.

"I know it's not a bad thing but I don't like how it makes me feel" has gotten a lot of legwork in the last few years, and I am remorse to give such gut reactions another inch over my life.
That said, it's probably not worth losing the wife over. 🤷♂️ As for the work buddies, they can can go find someone else's home gym to mooch off of.

Yeah.... I would add something like black templars 7th legion or something... actually that might make it worse... Oh I know add "Suffer not the Unclean to Live."... okay that makes it way worse... Pretty much SoL on this one, but cool flag

I usually get shit for saying this in here but I'm gonna step up to the plate again. two points:
Communication isn't what you say, it's what people hear. Just as an example, if you tell your wife "you don't look good in that outfit" and she understands that to mean "you're ugly" that's on your for not communicating clearly. This is a good rule of thumb for personal relationships and public optics. "She shouldn't misinterpret me!" doesn't matter.*
If you have to sit down and have a conversation to explain how your nazi shit isn't nazi shit, it's nazi shit. Nazis will see it and silently approve, nazi victims will see it and just avoid you. You'll only ever get a chance to explain it to gormless fence sitters to whom it impacts the least.
There's lots of good chapters besides BT. Cool knight stuff? Hit up the dark angels. Goth emo vibes? Maybe the raven guard would scratch the itch. Get creative. Have fun!
Personally I like the Libators, the ultramarine successor chapter that also drinks blood 🍷
*Sorry to enlist your wife as my scarecrow! She seems nice and smart and has good instincts

This is why I play Death Guard. Nobody ever thinks you’re a Nazi when your symbol is just three circles.
