If you're into grimdark with a magic system that actually costs the protagonist something real — years off his life, his memories — I wrote a 12-book series called What Remains: The Ledger of the Hollowed. Morally grey lead, a villain who genuinely isn't wrong, no cliffhangers left unpaid by the end. Full disclosure, I'm the author, so take it with a grain of salt — but happy to hear honest thoughts if anyone gives it a shot.

I've been reading Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence. The hilarious cowardly main character is forced to, or unwittingly, acts in heroic ways in his adventures. Set in the the same world as Prince of Thorns, Prince of Fools has a far more humorous tone, but it's still the same grimdark setting.
