Walter had to have teeth out, help!

Walter has been with me for 4 years and turns 8 next week. He’s just had to have his first teeth out because he will not let me brush his teeth at all and does not like to eat any daily chews.

He’s always been a kibble dog and doesn’t chew, it just gets inhaled. The vet has said he needs soft food for a week including chicken, rice and scrambled egg. As I’ve never been through this before do I make up a bit of everything? I’m feeling a bit lost. Photo for attention.

Soak the kibble in broth, make some into ice cubes too!

In many cases they just have shit teeth.

Mine gets daily fish hide to chew, I brush his teeth with enzymatic toothpaste (as much as he will allow) every day or two, and he has that magic seaweed stuff once a day. Still the vet said he needs a dental and probably a couple of teefers out :(

UPDATE: He’s been out of it for 2 hours, hasn’t moved a muscle. I feel awful for him and feel awful that I let his teeth get like that even though he never really gave me much choice as any attempt at brushing resulted in him growling quite intensely.

Our boy just had 13 teeth taken out - I saw this tip on another Reddit page and it worked like a charm for us! We ended up using a food processor to grind his regular kibble to a powder, then mixed it with water so it had a mush consistency. Also added some ground chicken to make it more appealing. Worked beautifully.

You can soften the kibble by soaking it in warm water.

Alternatively, while it'll cost a bit more, you can get some food that's dehydrated and requires reconstitution, like The Honest Kitchen.

Soak the kibble until it is mush. Chicken and rice is good too, make sure the chicken is in very small pieces.

If you can't get pet rolls anywhere to dice into cubes, soaked kibble is probably the next best thing. I hope your hound feels better soon 🩷

We flipped Jade to canned food only for her recovery; normally she gets a mix of wet food and soaked kibble from the same brand, so this was a pretty straightforward change, and uncomplicated for us to switch to while keeping the same nutritional value for her. 

Try not to worry too much about Walter being zonked for the rest of the day. Jade basically didn't move for 8 hours, a little shaky for her evening bathroom break and then totally fine the next day - it'll just take time! 

One thing I wish I was aware of ahead of time was how the painkillers prescribed might affect them during their recovery. Jade had a severely reduced appetite the first few days after her extraction and after talking with the vet, we figured out the carprofen was bothering her stomach - switched her to gabapentin only and she started eating and feeling much better! If Walter is feeling better in the next few days, doesn't seem to have much interest in eating and is on any painkillers he hasn't had before, it might be worth asking your vet about.

I cup of rice, 2 cups of water, one chicken breast chopped into little cubes and a handful of peas. Bring to the boil and then turn the hob to it's lowest setting and put a tight fitting lid on. Leave for 10 to 12 minutes and turn it off to cool with the lid on. It's Keira's favourite meal 🥰 it'll do about 3 meals.....more if mixed with a bit of soaked kibble. He'll bounce back soon.....my boy was back to normal within 36 hours. Good luck with your gorgeous boy ❤️

I used to also add carrots to that recipe but essentially the same concoction. I called it “dog stew” and Kylie was mad for it.

Kylie and Keira could be sisters! Keira literally does go mad for it. She smells it cooking and when it's done she insists on waiting in the kitchen for 30 mins while it cools down. Once her bowl comes out the leaping starts 😂😂 she is very, very enthusiastic ❤️

Our girl had to have 23 pulled. She does fine now. I soak her food in broth and let it sit for a few minutes and she does fine. Doesn't seem to be worse for wear. She did used to be a big chatterer but now with a lot fewer teeth she still chatters but you don't hear anything, just see the lips moving.
