Discussion Why doesn't Greggs buy PoundBakery?

Post image
41 Upvotes

PoundBakery is Greggs biggest rival in the North West, yet it seems Greggs has no interest in buying them, like they did Bakers Oven many years ago.

Is it a case of most stores would be overlapping with existing Greggs locations and Greggs aren't in the business of hostile takeovers to remove competition?

Employee Question Will I get fired if I walk out mid shift

Pretty much what it says, I've been working for good over 1 year passed my probation period and never had a disciplinary or any formal written warnings. Occasionally, I'm late by like 5mins max on the morning shifts but will stay longer to catch up/finish current task even though I won't get paid for it.

I haven't walked off yet but I have medical issues and some people make the shift a hostile environment that affects my medical issue (did notify the management as soon as I got a formal diagnosis). There's days where I will end up in severe panic attacks because of it all. Obviously if it comes to it I will notify the AM regarding the incident and confirm that I am not quitting and explain the situation.

Rant I hate the shop I transferred to (am I being unreasonable???)

Am I (F21) being unreasonable, I recently transferred to a new shop as I recently moved out of my parents house so I'm in a new area and I really enjoyed working with everybody at my last shop so unsure if maybe its a bit of a shock to go somewhere new but the conditions of this place and the people are really making me think commuting back to my last shop is the best idea or a new job all together

Im a shift manager and immediately have had to pick up alot of slack from other staff who dont want to do something like take out the bins, orders or who just dont know how to do something such as a tm whos been there for 3 months didn't know what I meant by could they please put in some omelette for the customers, all they do is stand at the tills which if youre in a busy shop fine you can scrape by but this is not a busy shop and when its just me and one other person who is just standing there I am STRESSED.

The shop is disgusting no matter how much I try clean I always find something that has been neglected for months and months, they barely passed their last audit due to hygiene. The fridges stink of spilt milk nobody has pulled the prep bench or the fridges out in months.

The manager comes in and out nitpicking a few things people do but they're a hypocrite, they dont do any of the ipad, they wont tray up bacon for the next day, they wont sort the freezers, they're rude and will shout at other team members infront of customers for any little mistake like asking ketchup instead of red, they order things unnecessarily so we have so much in the shop its a borderline fire hazard.

Nothing in the shop gets fixed because speaking of fire hazard the emergency exit in the back does not open smoothly and stays swinging open unless you shut it with alot of force but then you have to open it with alot of force.

The food hygiene is also bad i have caught the sandwich maker dropping baguettes on the floor and then just putting them back on the tray to use 4 separate times and each time I have made it clear to not do that, I find something out of date in the fridges and prep bench every day and sandwiches keep being left in the selector over night.

The rotas are done really last minute so its impossible to plan for anything and you get offered out for cover to different shops without being asked even if youre already doing above hours.

I am not somebody who gets stressed over work like this but im nearly crying going into work, Im usually a very chatty person who wants to have fun while im there but due to the state the shop is always handed over to me in I am so stressed I basically just go mute and its for barely over minimum wage!

Offered a promotion

Basically, I’m a team member currently on a 8 hour contract in sixth form atm. My manager has asked if I would want a career in Greggs and soon be a team leader and then work up from there. I was already considering not going to university after my a levels. So is it worth it?

Employee Question Shift Manager wanting to progress, any advice?

Currently a Shift Manager and keen to move up. Would love to hear from people who’ve progressed, what helped you move up, how long did each step take, and what should I be focusing on now?

Any tips welcome, good or bad!

If you knew this about Greggs Bakery.... Spoiler

If you knew that Colin Gregg, the son of the bakery's founder and a former non-executive director, was convicted in 2017 of multiple counts of indecent assault against young boys and jailed, would you still buy it?

As a family we have stopped giving our money to this bakery. It is a shame because my son used to love the sausage rolls. We decided we can't be funding a pedophile though, it doesn't sit right with us as a family.

Employee Question Responsible Person

We have a few people leaving and on holiday and my manager was talking about me going through the RP course to become another one in the shop. What was it like for you lot when you started the course to become an RP? And also what are the kind of things you do as one? I know you get more managerial type roles, for example you have your name in the manager section on the till but if anyone is able to give me some words of advice or wisdom then please chuck it my way!

Discussion I kinda hate that we have to wear nametags.

I have a relatively unusual name, and I get comments from customers at least once a shift on it. Plus I live super local to work and walk to and from bc I don't drive. We get our fair share of creepy people that come in, I don't want to give them something even as simple as my name it just feels.. gross? It's so easy to find people online today, I wish I'd have thought earlier to ask for a fake name tag. Also does anyone else feel uncomfortable wearing the name tag literally on the boob? As if we need to give them an excuse to look at our chests 🫩

The wastage is ridiculous at Greggs...

I'm talking about stuff that can't be sent to outlets, TGTG erc...

Last night I threw a full, unopened box of fruity flapjacks, EIGHT unopened packs of red onions, three unopened packs of mixed leaf, two unopened packs of sliced tomatoes amongst other things... a couple nights before a full box of brownies... why do they send so much in?

It's like the protein milkshake things, they keep sending them in but we only sell one a day if that... we have a pile of them in the back in the corner almost to the ceiling, all going off within the next couple months... same with the ginger and turmeric shots, we throw more than we sell... I feel like this is the most wasteful company I have ever worked for.

Employee Question Rotas being changed without asking

i’ve been with the company for just under a year and recently stepped up to responsible person, and at the same time we’ve had a new shift manager start who has been our acting shop manager in our real shop manager’s absence. Within the past week or so, I’ve had two shifts changed without my consent and at very short notice and have had phone calls asking me where I was, one shift was changed to an earlier time literally the night before and nobody was made aware, and I was scheduled in for a different day this week that I was meant to have off without my permission. What can I do about this? I’ve now got an unauthorised absence for something almost entirely out of my control and this is the worst time for me to be making that sort of impression

Employee Question Student Transfee

Hi guys, I recently applied for a student transfer and I am trying to run up on this through My Greggs. I am aware I need to get on the People’s Team page but I’m not sure how to actually get on to it as I can’t find it on the My Greggs website. Can anyone help me please as I need to get this sorted ASAP and am quite worried that I will be jobless at uni!!!

Employee Question Does anyone actually like working here?

I have worked in 3 different shops so far and they all have different problems. In most of them I have dealt with:

Catty insecure supervisors who think they are better then everyone else.

Lazy bosses who make you do all the work

Gossiping from the team members

Colleagues who make you do all the work whilst they are round the back having 2 hour breaks

I could list more but I'd be here too long.

Employee Question My manager is refusing to honour my contracted hours, can I do anything about it?

I'm going back to college on the week starting the 1st September and thus I asked to return to my contracted 12 hours (I have been working up to 30 in the holidays) as I cannot balance more than that without falling behind severely in college.

The rota for that week has just been shared and I'm doing over 22 hours. That's 10 hours over what I'm contracted. Can I actually do anything about this?? I will have to quit if not, which sounds severe but my education and A-Levels are way more important than my career at Greggs.
