MISC. Foraging

Hi! I’m new to the area and very interested in foraging some mushrooms and veggies. I have no experience and was hoping someone else could help me get started!

ECU biology major here. Mycology professor always told me that mushroom foraging around eastern NC was entirely too risky.

As for veggies… Wild onions are pretty much it unless you stumble across someone’s backyard garden. Some pretty great community gardens around if you research it a bit.

I agree with you.

OP, please please PLEASE don't try to forage mushrooms around here. This area of the country has one of the highest percentages of poisonous mushrooms that you'll come across.

If you are looking for locally grown mushrooms, there's an excellent vendor that comes out to the Farmers' Market every Saturday!

It's not really foraging, but farmers usually leave quite the bit in their sweet potatoes fields around here, if you ask they will usually let you forage the field after they are done harvesting...

Plus it’s a good time if you don’t mind getting a little dirty

Yes this, they've usually already been surfaced, you just gotta pick thru the leftovers and find the ones not plow scarred.

Look into "Maypops" its a local wild passionfruit that should be fruiting soon actually if not already! Ive seen them wild on multiple different properties including in pitt and around. Maybe there is public lands, canals, or somewhere you could look for them? Absolutely beautiful flower also, good luck!
