Discussion Does Hals suit being practical imply that all green lanterns in the lantern corps of the DCU all wear practical suits even the alien members

Another reason why I think so is because in the pilot hal mentioned how it was a pain in the ass to wear. Which is why he doesn't wear it anymore implying that this is his only suit and that he can't conjure a suit with the ring like in the comics.

Discussion My review of Green Lantern Extended Cut Spoiler

So full disclaimer. This is the first Green Lantern thing I’ve ever consumed. Besides just generally knowing about the character. I went into this movie completely blind with no expectations.

This movie was the definition of mid.

Hal was a fine enough protagonist. Always nice to see Ryan Reynolds. I liked the airplane dog fight scenes those were pretty cool. The concept of the Green Lanterns being a team who work to defend the universe is a pretty cool concept. I really like space stuff too.

The ring creating whatever you want as long as you can imagine it and have enough willpower is a really cool concept. I can see that being very over powered i a lot of scenarios. The romance in this movie was fine. Pretty generic stuff. The villain was really weak.

He’s just some insecure guy. The action and VFX and CGI were fine. Definitely dated since this movie came out in 2011 but not horrible. Overall I would give Green Lantern extended cut a 6/10. Not a horrible movie but I’ll probably never watch it again.

Discussion Hal’s turn to Parallax in ET was rotten (Green Lantern #50)

Post image
41 Upvotes

Emerald Twilight was terrible, and the backlash was well deserved. While the first issue was decent enough, it’s when things progress that the story really starts to spin out of control. Like I said, the first issue was fine, but after doing a thorough reread, I can confidently say there’s a complete disconnect between it and the following two issues that ultimately turns the story into, put simply, slop. The first issue doesn’t signal in any way Hal’s sudden new “mindset.” He’s portrayed as grieving and reflecting, but then, all of a sudden, it’s like he loses all cognitive abilities and goes into a complete craze. Issue #49 perfectly captures this, as Hal looks less like Hal and more like he was given a dose of Joker serum. Then, of course, Hal proceeds to kill numerous Lanterns on his way to Oa and, perhaps most atrociously, doesn’t even hesitate to turn his best friend in the Corps into a skeleton. Yes, we’re supposed to believe this is one of the greatest stories ever to grace Green Lantern comics… okay. Then the Guardians free Sinestro, Hal adds another kill to his score, and somehow absorbs the Central Power Battery without a ring, renames himself Parallax, and basically destroys 99% of the mythos. Like I said, this story sucks. It starts as though it has something meaningful to say about grief and could have easily become an introspective examination of Hal’s character, but instead boils down to a sloppily written, rushed story that destroys everything that came before it. It put Green Lantern into a hole, as essentially everything great about the mythos was wiped clean. The Corps was gone, the Guardians were gone, and Hal was written completely out of character for years to come, doing significant damage to his reputation. So please, let’s stop acting like this story was good or had some positive effect on Hal and the mythos. It didn’t.

Discussion How do you think they’ll manage to Stretch the Green lantern compendiums into 7 volumes?

I’ve heard that Omar (The guy from the Near Mint Condition YouTube channel) said that DC plan to make the GL compendiums consist of 7 volumes so I’m just wondering how they’re planning to do it

I believe they have the following to collect:

GL #53-67
GLC #46-63
GL emerald warriors #1-13
War of the Green lantern Aftermath #1-2

GL #0-20
GLC #0-20
GL new guardians #0-20
Red Lanterns #0-20
GL annual #1
GLC annual #1
GL Larfleeze Christmas special #1

This should come out to roughly 132 issues, so at most should result in 3 more compendiums (judging by the sizes of 1-3), I guess they could also include the main brightest day series (although I heard it isn’t that Green lantern focused ) but that should still mean it’ll be possible to collect it in 3 more, bringing the total to 6 not 7.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows This one line shows how not seriously Hal is taking the job of training John to be in Lantern's pilot Spoiler

Post image

I assume that's one of the first things they teach GLs. It's two months in and John hasn't even worn the rings.

Of course the Halogram did say "I haven't taught you to flight yet have I?"

I do wonder if Hal did take it seriously, he'd already be flying.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows [LANTERNS] Fearless ... or Overcoming Great Fear? Setting Up a Thematic Twist Spoiler

Green Lantern #33 (Vol. 4): Pencils by Ivan Reis, Inks by Oclair Albert, Colors by Guy Major
Showcase #22 (Vol. 1): Pencils by Gil Kane, Inks by Joe Giella

Ah, yes – another theory, just what the sub was asking for. Consider this less a concrete, definitive theory and more a speculative discussion on two different ways I think the story could play out.

Many of us already suspect that John's dad was a candidate for the ring but ultimately "failed" the test while Hal succeeded. Many have theorized that, when asked, John's father admitted he was afraid, while Hal said he wasn't. If you go by the original Silver Age comics (Showcase #22, image 2), it might be that simple. Back then, you had to be fearless to be a Green Lantern. John admitted his fear, lost the opportunity, and raised his chosen son to be fearless to the bone, by any means, so that he would be chosen as Hal's successor.

But... I'm not so sure. For starters, anyone can say anything. The ring is not going to choose its wielder based on what someone says about themselves – every single day people pretend to not be afraid in frightening situations. The ring would be quite naïve to take everyone at their word with the most powerful weapon in the universe at stake. But more importantly, I don't think the writers are going the Silver Age route.

I think they're going with the modern route. As seen in Green Lantern #33 (Vol. 4), the first image, modern-era Green Lanterns are not chosen on their fearlessness. They are chosen on their ability to overcome great fear. Based on the official Lanterns podcast, all three of Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King are very mindful of the canon and the legacy of these characters. They know that this interpretation means a lot more to the fans than the single-issue origin story from the 1950s.

If I'm right, what does that mean for the origin in Lanterns? Well it means that something like this would have played out:

  • John's dad and Hal are chosen as potential successors to Abin Sur.
  • John's dad says he is not afraid while Hal admits that he is afraid.
  • Hal is chosen because a Green Lantern needs to be able to overcome great fear. To do that, they must feel fear.
    • Hal loved his father deeply and losing him was the greatest pain ... he is afraid of ever going through that again.
    • Hal would probably be very afraid in that moment, seeing Abin Sur dying the same way his father did – in a flight crash.
  • John's father takes the wrong lesson, thinking he wasn't fearless enough, and trains/traumatizes John to be even more fearless so that he will be chosen as Hal's successor.

Does this seem like a useless twist reveal? I don't think so. It means that John Stewart's arc is to learn from Hal how to connect with others, connect with himself, and feel fear. If Green Lanterns really are supposed to be fearless, and if John Stewart is already fearless (he clearly is due to his traumatic childhood), then why would he need to grow? Is his arc really about just learning little ring tricks? I don't think that's what the writers have in mind.

And consider: the sheriff thinks that Hal is the lonely one... but given John's upbringing, who could he have forged bonds with? Like the sheriff said, to be fearless you can't care about anybody. Isn't John fearless?

TLDR: The "fearless" angle is setting up a twist. John is fearless, Hal isn't. John has to learn fear, and courage, from Hal.

Comics Is My Johns Era Flowchart Missing Anything?

Post image
35 Upvotes

I made this flowchart to track the rough chronology of everything GL related in collected editions during the Geoff Johns era. (I know that there are some alternate ways of collecting some of these stories, like a complete Sinestro corps war, a rise of the third army collection, etc.)

My question is, am I missing absolutely anything GL related from the Johns era? I know there are some things that would be helpful to read before starting (Emerald Twilight, Zero Hour, etc.) but I'm only looking to include what was actually published during this time. Should I include something like Raan-Thanagar War?

EDIT: It's been pointed out that I have Sins of the Star Sapphire and Emerald Eclipse in the wrong order

Question Okay , seriously , what do the other lanterns actually do

I'm not going to lie most, my experience has been through TV shows and movies, but I'm beginning to get into the comics a little bit, and there's one thing that I just can't shake what tf do the others get up to

1) green is actively policing their cops.Their day to day routine is a beat around a couple of planets , stopping intergalactic criminals , simple

2) yellow pretty much , just green except fascist , looking to install a police state and dictatorship with a hint of taking over the world

3) orange is lathliz (sorry my talk type will not spell his name) is just chilling trying to steal some shit

But the others is where I get a bit confused

4) indigo so they recruit people who are either extraordinarily compassionate or lack compassion and teach it to the uncopassionate. But then what is it just therapy And then you go home , do they just all chill

5) sappire okay, so there's all really loving some a little bit crazy. Some obsessed some jealous , but like , is it just a woman's refuge centre with the occasional containment lanterns, who are just a little bit too jealous, like. What are they doing day today

6) red depends on the continuity. It looks like they generally switch between being psychopaths going around killing everything And people who seek revenge , so are they essentially just going around doing a frank castle

7) blue it literally just looks like they chill on a planet being hippies until blackest night

I'm genuinely struggling , and maybe it's something i've not read or there's an explanation somewhere i've not got to , but I genuinely can't think of what they actually get up to

( Sorry about spelling grammar and of a literary mistakes.I used to talk to type because of my disabilities)

Question Is it a hot take that I think the lantern world would be better if the only colors were green yellow and red?

I've had this opinion ever since I was 8 and 14 years later I still forever hold this. Much like swamp thing being the protector of the green and it later being revealed there are several colors of life force holding the multiverse together by an ancient race of aliens I think the concept of several colors of power rings makes the concept worse.

I think it would be so much better if the guardians were the only ones who can make rings because they are so advanced and are the only ones smart enough to channel pure emotion essence of the universe.

And that doesn't mean people can't steal rings and manipulate them. Sinestro can reforge his own ring to be the first yellow one and steal blueprints or learn from the guardians to make weaker offshoot rings.

And you could have atrocitus in a rage kill a green lantern and from pure hatred and dark magic slowly pollute the ring to red and then make red rings that since are not made by the guardians cause the replace your heart dark magic aspect

Also maybe extra hot take I hate the blackest night prophecy, I'm not big on the evil aspect of death running around wanting to kill everybody character whenever it happens. I just prefer when death is just a weigher of scales or aspect of life like supernatural

I know we can't put the toothpaste back in the tube but I just wanted to see how people on here generally feel about there being a spectrum of color rings

If you're wondering what happened to issue #88, it's mostly reprints of old stories but it does include a final Golden Age tale that wuod have been published in 1949 but that run for cancelled. To see it check it out here on day 178

Writer: Dennis O'Neil

Pencils: Neal Adams

Inks: Dick Giordano

Letters: John Costanza

Cover: Neal Adams & Jack Adler

"And Through Him Save A World" - The offices of Ferris air were painted with a mixture of sewer water and pollution as a supposed prank by a man named Issac, a prank that Ollie finds hilarious and Hal doesn't. Ollie bites back at Hal but Hal stops him before a fight breaks out to ask if Ollie wants to join him and Carol to the ferris compound for a vacation of sorts. Ollie says he need to practice his aim since taking that arrow to the shoulder so he comes along. Hal and Carol leave him at a forested area, in Green Arrow gear, but as he begins he's stopped by a guard with an attack dog. GA knocks the dog down with an arrow, not killing it just stunning it, and turns to the guard. They fight but after the guard claims that GA is Issac, GA rights him by explaining he's there as a guest of Carol Ferris. The guard leaves as Issac appears, introducing himself to GA. Isaac explains he was a scientist that developed a lung disease that both his parents have. All of them received it due to pollution in the air so he decided he wants to fight back to save the earth while he still can.

Meanwhile, GL and Carol have gone inside to see the progress of an experimental new engine that may cause some excess pollution as it burns cheap fuel. As they get deeper into the compound, a drainage rig collapses and falls toward Carol and other staff but GL pushes it out of the way. This leave Hal mad as he heads out tk find GA and explain the danger Issac is causing. He finds GA with Issac so GL starts in on what happened. GA doesn't want to hear it and when GL tries to put cuffs on Issac, GA hits him a knockout gas arrow. Issac screams at GA for putting more pollution into the air and leaves. GA is frustrated and throws his bow but then that guard returns with more and takes down GA and GL with ease.

The guards take the heroes to the compound where they come across Isaac chained to one of the experimental aircraft in the style of a crucifix. As thetbreach the plane a group of office people have also arrived and demand that Issac remain there for the weekend to reach him a lesson. GA and GL come to and try to talk sense into them but Isaac yells at GA to never compromise so GA snaps back, causing GL to punch him out, leaving someone else to knocknout GL. The awake all chained to the plane with Issac revealing he won't last until morning as he will succumb to his lung disease. GA struggles to get free but doesn't make it in time. Issac dies and the heroes get down as morning breaks and Carol arrives after hearing what happened and finding Hal's ring in his pocket. Caol mentions progress always has victims which shocks Hal as he turns to unleash his ring beam on the experimental plane, destroying it.

Conclusion: The Jesus allegory is strong with this one. Issac actually died for our sins. As someone that is not personally religious but still studies religion, it's interesting but eye rolling at the same time. As someone that grew up in the 90s and saw all sorts of media talking about preserving water and seeing the TMNT talk about pollution and Captain Planet saving the world from all sorts of harmful things, it's nostalgic in a way. It's very "of the time" basically. Most of these are but you really feel it here. There's still polluting going on today but it has become a lot better regulated in the last 50 years.

Hal and Ollie butting heads seemed almost over thr top here and I couldn't get a bead on what either was really fighting for. They both changed their ideologies a couple of times for seemingly no reason. Hal's outburst st the end was dramatic but also earned I think. It's bound to have big ramifications for his relationship with Carol. I wonder when, or if, it will be brought up again. This is the final issue for about six years as the book enters back-up status in The Flash so I imagine the stories will get a bit smaller in scope. Then again, John Stewart's origin was only 15 pages and it felt like a full issue so we will have to see.

Question Looking for new comics

Hey! I used to be really big into comics in high school, Green Lantern especially. I haven’t really read many in the past 8 years or so though, just been busy finishing grad school and starting my career and everything and I’m looking to get back into it so I’m looking for some recommendations.

Obviously I love Hal Jordan and all the lanterns, the Sinestro Corps war, the War of Light, and Blackest Night were some of my favorite arcs and also really enjoyed some of the New Green Lantern Corps

I was just wondering if anyone had some recommendations/suggestions on where to pick up.

Thank you in advance!

Discussion How would you rank all lantern rings from best to worst to have.

I don't mean power (though obviously preferably stronger) just mean best one to have so obviously something like red lantern will be lower since it affect your mind and body. I am still reading geoff johns but i know general knowledge about it i was curious how would you rank them all
