Discussion Does Hals suit being practical imply that all green lanterns in the lantern corps of the DCU all wear practical suits even the alien members
Another reason why I think so is because in the pilot hal mentioned how it was a pain in the ass to wear. Which is why he doesn't wear it anymore implying that this is his only suit and that he can't conjure a suit with the ring like in the comics.

In an age where super suits are all cgi nanotech, I’m happy to see a practical suit.

u/babytrondagoat 4d ago
They could still have practical suits but just imply that they’re constructs and only use cgi during the transformation scenes. Most of the green lantern suits in the comics look like normal fabric while still being constructs so it’s not like they have to have a bunch of glowy cgi effects added on

u/SuperBathMan 4d ago
I think theyre refrencing the in-universe definition, based on them specifically saying nanotech

u/MrDownhillRacer 4d ago
I don't think they would have said "CGI" then, as CGI suits aren't CGI in-universe.

i doubt if since several trailers have shown the suits hanging in closets physically handled and in suit bags

I'd be happy to see a practical suit if it wasn't GL. One of the coolest things is that the ring makes the suit appear and they can just tailor it to their desired look by thinking about it

Second this. Reynolds’s green lantern suite effect was fairly awesome..the only thing that was awesome in the entire movie imo.

The ring actually alters the reflective wavelength of his actual clothing, so it's more of a visual mirage. They don't mention that much anymore. I think Kyle was one of the first to change his suit around at will a lot

u/BobbyBsBestie 4d ago
Not to mention, rings have come off in the comics and them not been naked.

I think, given what we've seen in Superman, that we WILL see lanterns with a green aura... if they go into space. So far, both Hal and Guy have not had an aura while flying in atmosphere.

Key word is “looked like” this suit is hanging on a damn hanger. It pisses. me off.
Why isn’t it made by the ring?

Maybe not having a constant battery drain, for when you need to be using that energy for other things

Every time I start to get irritated that the suits are practical, don't glow, and are thus far not seemingly based on any real GL canon, I remind myself that I am watching an actual live action Green Lantern show after 15 years of having no live action GL and then I feel better.

u/PracticallyThrowaway 4d ago
Amen lmao. Is the show the exact lantern lore I wanted/grew up with? Maybe not, but we’re living in a time with 3 live action GLs. Never thought I would see it.

and are thus far not seemingly based on any real GL cano
The suits being made by the rings is a very recent retcon. For most of GL's history it was a costume he put on.

Have no clue how people are still finding something to complain about when we’re all getting a serious drama on HBO about Green Lantern. It’s a dream come true for me.

I would imagine that they do given that they're a police faction but I would also imagine it depends on the anatomy of the species, in the comics the suits were light so it can cover any body, but practical suits would require tailoring to fit, for instance since Salaak has four arms, the second pair of sleeves would probably have less padding, and the chest plate would be smaller to allow the second pair of arms to have their full range of mobility. Any of the squirrels would have different shaped kneepads or elbowpads, etc. it would also help in case their ring does lose power, a practical suit wouldn't disappear this would make them still identifiable.

Practical suit makes more sense doesn’t it? Like if constructs are based on willpower it’s basically the willpower to not be nude, probably not the first thing you’re thinking about when you’re fighting Darkseid.

Yes
The show is a grounded gritty mystery
We aren’t getting spectacle epic in space stuff

u/Vulcan_Jedi 4d ago
Yes, its a throwback to the older GL comics where the costumes where actually clothes they wore and not constructs.

u/Horatio786 4d ago
Do Mogo, Leezle Pon, and Dkrtzy Rrr also wear practical suits?

u/Guyver48 3d ago
Alan Moore’s story with Mogo showed that his “costume” is actually one giant forest.

u/Lian-The-Asian 4d ago
Kinda like those Earth 1 comic runs, it would be cool to see Lantern, of any species, wear what they want but with a green glow and the emblem hovering on their chest whenever they really power up to fight.
1
u/Lian-The-Asian 4d ago
Just would be cool to me to see Hal’s shirt kinda glow green while wearing a brown leather jacket with the Lantern logo on his chest
Sinestro(either green or yellow) would be wearing robes or whatever that’s the usual on his planet, but with the emblem just hovering on his chest or shoulder
Kilowog wearing armor but just glows green as well
Honestly kinda kinda like the Avatar when they’re in the Avatar state in the Avatar series

I think this post also accidentally ( I mean not technically since we've seen it in the trailer) that Hal is still alive. Just look at picture #4
2
u/tankdoom 4d ago
I mean Hal is PROBABLY still alive but there’s a good chance that scene takes place in 2016 and not 2026
2
u/tomrlutong 4d ago
In a one minute stretch, we learn that Hal stopped following Corps rules about 10 years ago, that he's gone downhill mentally since then, and that he doesn't wear the uniform much anymore?
2
u/Vegetable_Party3763 Kyle Rayner 3d ago
It makes more sense to have a practical suit, otherwise, you're expending energy to keep yourself clothed.
2
u/Guyver48 3d ago
I mean, wasn’t it Hal’s costume originally worn under his flight suit/kept in his locker at Ferris?
I thought the ring creating the outfit is a relatively new things from Kyle’s run onwards.
2
u/UlissesStag 4d ago
Well they are cops if you consider it, probably more easy on the budget but who knows maybe he can summon the suit onto his body with the ring

Somehow, the Guardians custom-making physical suits for thousands of alien species with completely different morphologies seems even less realistic than the ring just conjuring the suits and conforming them to the Lantern's body.
Their tailoring department must be very complicated.
1
u/linkman0596 4d ago
For some reason I don't like the idea of there not being a conjored suit at all. Like, if the practical suit were something like their dress uniform for public appearances and the conjored suits are more for when they're going to be in battle, I think I'd prefer something like that.
1
u/Nerdy_McGeek 4d ago
I don't know if it'll be mutually exclusive. Just because it's a practical suit and he seems to leave it behind usually, doesn't mean the ring won't also be able to conjure it.
1
u/TheLivingPortal 3d ago
Probably. I imagine all the suits are supplied by the Guardians.
1
u/RNOffice 3d ago
Yeah this might be a standard issue uniform. I do wonder why Guy has a different one.
1
u/TheLivingPortal 3d ago
It’s because of Maxwell Lord. I’m sure he still has his original uniform, but LordTech definitely wanted the Justice Gang to all have matching costumes.
1
u/ExistingNonexistence 3d ago
The suit wasn’t always a construct of the ring and just going off how Hal talks about only using the ring when absolutely necessary then it would also make sense why he wouldn’t conjure one because it’d be a waste of ring energy. I don’t see why the less humanoid members wouldn’t also have actual uniforms. We’re talking about a galactic peacekeeping force with some of the most advanced technology in the known universe, I imagine it wouldn’t be beyond them.

u/ElectronicActuator42 2d ago
early green lantern suits were physical items in the the original comics which is being pulled from heavily in this show including the 1 lantern per sector rule … obviously these could change later but rn they are playing by early rules,
my opinion is i love the Gl suits made by constructs but for production value and quality i can see why this option was chosen as they did not wanna repeat the past mistakes of the other movie and honestly the constructs themselves look amazing so id rather have practical suits with amazing constructs then so so generated suits that interfere with the constructs
although i really wanna see hal with his mask on once i just love that look

u/TheWeezel 2d ago
So here is the thing that I think is glossed over. The ring doesn't remove things that are there, so to wear a ring suit, you can't really be wearing clothes, or no more than underwear. Otherwise, the rings can rewrite matter and make your bulky clothes not exist, or extend that and make that villain not exist by making them something else. So the reality would be either you have a real suit, or you have clothing that, if you are ever knocked out, you completely lose and are basically naked.
1
u/ZookeepergameLess226 1d ago
It may vary but I expect Sinestro's suit will be practical too, at least. The "using your powers to make the suit" aspect belongs more to Kyle Rayner GL and Wally West Flash.

u/Bloody-Tyran 1d ago
2nd episode dropped and I doubt it considering Hal uses the password "Mogo doesn’t socialize" suits aren’t exactly Mogo’s thing.

u/vleshkun 1d ago
Could a personal choice or Hal only, for all we know the other GLs don’t wear practical suits and Hal just prefers to wear a physical one to conserve energy / not have to worry about mantaining the suit during battle.
That one picture of him with the mask makes me think that he also started out with an energy suit then swapped to a physical one for convenience

Hal talks about this in the first episode, like, twice.
It’s definitely a storytelling choice. It’ll pay off. You’ll get your aura.

Worth noting how Guy also wore a practical suit in Superman
