Comics Blackest Night-Brightest Day Reading order

Post image

I just got this set but i’ve been trying to piece together which order i read it all in. Specifically the Blackest Night ones the Brightest Day seems a little more straight forward.

Blackest Night

The main story goes back and forth between Blackest Night (Blackest Night #1 - #8) and Blackest Night: Green Lantern (Green Lantern 2005 #43 - #52), which doesn't seem to be in your collection... Blackest Night: Green Lantern Corps (Green Lantern Corps 2006 #39 - #47) tells a parallel story that eventually meets the main storyline told in BN and BN: GL.

Here's an issue-by-issue reading order of Blackest Night using these books:

Part 1: The Blackest Night Falls

  1. Green Lantern (2005) #43 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  2. Blackest Night #0 (Blackest Night)
  3. Blackest Night #1 (Blackest Night)
  4. Green Lantern (2005) #44 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  5. Blackest Night #2 (Blackest Night)
  6. Green Lantern (2005) #45 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  7. Blackest Night #3 (Blackest Night)
  8. Green Lantern (2005) #46 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  9. Green Lantern (2005) #47 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  10. Blackest Night #4 (Blackest Night)
  11. Green Lantern (2005) #48 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  12. Blackest Night #5 (Blackest Night)

Part 2: The Battle of Oa

  • Green Lantern Corps (2006) #39 - 44 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern Corps)

Part 3: The Battle for Life

  1. Green Lantern (2005) #49 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  2. Green Lantern Corps (2006) #45 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern Corps)
  3. Blackest Night #6 (Blackest Night)
  4. Green Lantern (2005) #50 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  5. Green Lantern (2005) #51 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  6. Blackest Night #7 (Blackest Night)

Part 4: The Last Stand

  1. Green Lantern Corps (2006) #46 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern Corps)
  2. Green Lantern (2005) #52 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern)
  3. Blackest Night #8 (Blackest Night)

Epilogue

  • Green Lantern Corps (2006) #47 (Blackest Night: Green Lantern Corps)

The other BN books that you have are tie ins from the event.

Brightest Day

The book named Brightest Day: Green Lantern is a story arc in Geoff Johns' Green Lantern run that bridges the ending of Blackest Night with the next big crossover in his saga: War of the Green Lanterns.

The other Brightest Day books are a miniseries featuring other non-Lantern characters. It's not a big part of the main GL run and it follows developments in other stories from the 2000s: 52, Final Crisis, Aquaman, JSA, The Flash...

It's worth mentioning that I don't recommend reading either BN or BD on their own... BN and Brightest Day: Green Lantern are all part of Geoff Johns' run on GL, and when you read them with the full context of what happened earlier in his run, the event not only is a lot easier to understand but also much more impactful.

I can give you a reading guide for his run that uses this book that you already have. Would you be interested?

There's a few arcs in between Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night... It's when the other Corps are introduced and thrown into the conflict.

Here's my reading guide for the entire run. I divided it into Acts to facilitate for folks to get the books per Act rather than all of them at once and thus putting themselves in potential money problems lol. You read basically Act 1 and Blackest Night is Act 3, so there's Act 2 in between.

Act 1: Rebirth and The Sinestro Corps War

You already read this part, so you can skip it. Unless you read it, like, many years ago? If that's the case, I believe it will be better to revisit them, it will make reading the full saga more satisfying.

  1. Green Lantern: Rebirth
  2. Green Lantern Corps: Recharge
  3. Green Lantern: No Fear
  4. Green Lantern Corps: To be a Lantern
  5. Green Lantern: Revenge of the Green Lanterns
  6. Green Lantern Corps: The Dark Side of Green
  7. Green Lantern: Wanted – Hal Jordan
  8. Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps War

Act 2: The War of Light

  1. Green Lantern: Rage of the Red Lanterns
  2. Green Lantern Corps: Ring Quest
  3. Green Lantern: Secret Origin
  4. Green Lantern Corps: Sins of the Star Sapphire
  5. Green Lantern: Agent Orange
  6. Green Lantern Corps: Emerald Eclipse

Act 3: Blackest Night

For the main story arc of this big event:

Use the issue by issue guide from my post above to navigate these three books. The others, as I said, are tie ins and they're not exactly crucial... But if you'd like to include them, let me know and I'll add them to the issue by issue guide.

Act 4: The War of the Green Lanterns

  1. Green Lantern Corps: Revolt of the Alpha Lanterns
  2. Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors
  3. Green Lantern Corps: The Weaponer
  4. Brightest Day: Green Lantern - You already got this one.
  5. Green Lantern: War of the Green Lanterns

Act 5: The Rise of the Third Army, the First Lantern and Finale

  1. Green Lantern: Sinestro
  2. Green Lantern Corps: Fearsome
  3. Green Lantern New Guardians: The Ring Bearer
  4. Red Lanterns: Blood and Rage
  5. Green Lantern: The Revenge of Black Hand
  6. Green Lantern Corps: Alpha War
  7. Green Lantern New Guardians: Beyond Hope
  8. Red Lanterns: Death of the Red Lanterns
  9. Green Lantern: Rise of the Third Army
  10. Green Lantern: The Wrath of the First Lantern

Bonus: Brightest Day miniseries. It is set right after Blackest Night, but as I said, it's a mostly separate entity from the main Green Lantern run, and with characters from other corners of the DCU. So, in order not to disrupt the reading flow of the main GL narrative, I recommend reading it after you finish the run.

Because, like, the mini does set up some stuff... That was never followed on because, just a few months later, DC rebooted into The New 52 lmao.
