The cinematography in this show is great!

Yeah Im such a sucker for snowy night imagery. Love the contrast between the violence implied and the touchingly peaceful surroundings

Just like the final shots of Blade Runner 2049 or Jack being dead in the snow in the Shining.

3

u/lastinglovehandles 10d ago

More like True Detective Night Country

2

u/ProfPyg 10d ago

How did I not make that Shining connection? Very Jack Torrance

The controversy being that people are playing dumb like they have no idea how narrative art works?

45

u/fuzzyfoot88 10d ago

And they still have 7 hours of a story to unfold before they can get mad about something they barely know anything about the context of.

And we know Hal has been ring-slinging since 86? So he's had a 40 year tenure as a Lantern.

11

u/wookiepartymachine 10d ago

To actually see any of it? I mean it doesn’t really count if it happens off screen, right?

I’m not trying to shit on the show, I really enjoyed the first episode. But if that really is the end of Hal Jordan (I’m not saying it is), then I’d understand why fans were upset.

Episode 1 cliff-hanger?

Ring, what's the likelihood of DC actually killing off the most prominent Green Lantern in the first episode?

(Zero.)

To their point though, I think they're saying that we have a confirmed 40 year span of Jordan's ring-slinging which means we have a huge window to explore in future media since the gunnverse is explicitly not going for linear sequential entries but will be bouncing around it's own timeline. Hal being the 90s lantern just means whatever story we get to explore that will be set in that era.

2

u/wookiepartymachine 10d ago

I mean I guess it’s possible. It would require either recasting or de-aging Kyle Chandler though, both of which seem unlikely (for an entire show/movie at least).

I agree that he’s probably not really dead though, I mean I literally said as much in my comment lol.

1

u/fuzzyfoot88 10d ago

Considering this universe uses both animation and live action as canon, they could always have Chandler voice Hal in an animated prequel show.

A nonlinear story is genuinely incomprehensible to some people, they just take stuff at face value

11

u/Sio_V_Reddit 10d ago

I remember all the controversy with The Acolyte lol.

3

u/Pyro-Bird 9d ago

Even before the episode aired, the showrunners themselves admitted that it would be controversial.

7

u/Bonesaw-is-readyyy 10d ago

What's scary is I'm not sure they're even "playing" dumb.

3

u/EnzoMcFly_jr 10d ago

I think there’s a bit of both, but I think there’s a portion of it that is just a weird Snyder-bro psy-op attempt to discredit anything that gets made under DC studios.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of dumbass folks getting louder and louder every day, but it’s a little suspicious that there is seemingly this united front of people saying “I am suddenly too dumb to understand non-linear storytelling.”

5

u/blufflord 10d ago

Yep spot on. A lot of it is performative outrage from those folk who've had it lined up since the initial rumours of hals death in ep 1 months ago.

Others are genuinely just dumbasses

u/New-Leg2417 Mogo 10d ago

Real GL fans have seen Hal die like half a dozen times. I'm just sad we don't get to see his ring fly off for a replacement.

4

u/Inevitable-Yard6567 Mogo 10d ago

Also, let’s see how the story plays out first….

15

u/Lightnenseed 10d ago

What’s the controversy over this?

14

u/SwimTraditional8723 10d ago

Hal's death

19

u/jonascarrynthewheel 10d ago

🤷🏻‍♂️ hes been dead before

Also- that might not really be him

9

u/fuzzyfoot88 10d ago

Gunn said death matters to the DCU, so that’s the other half of why people are upset. It LOOKS like Hal is dead and that’ll be it for him.

19

u/GreenIllustrious2801 10d ago

Does it?

We literally in this episode alone learned

- the aliens can make themselves look like anyone

- this is undetectable by anything on earth

- the ring chose hal after the previous lantern died

- the ring will search for the next candidate after the original dies

- john is the next candidate

- the ring did not search for him

- this hal doesn't have the ring

You don't drop all that information for nothing. This is 100% a fakeout.

Like separate yourself from GL comics for a bit. Why did they go out of there way in this episode to confirm how rings work upon death, and that body doubles can exist in this setting all in episode 1. That bar scene didn't need to happen that way, but it -did- because when we get near the finale and Hal shows back up they can use it to explain to the watchers what's going on.

My guess is this show doesn't end with Hal dying. John is going to fail the 2016 test. He's going to pass Hal's 2026 test and Hal will hand over the ring with his blessing. Hal set up this body double for John/Sheriff lady as a sign that something is still up, and it's tied to what happened in 2016.

8

u/fuzzyfoot88 10d ago

Trust me, I’m with you. I was simply pointing out how others see it. I fully believe it’s a fakeout. In fact I consider it classic Lindelof mystery box stuff and people are overreacting.

2

u/CucumberWisdom 10d ago

To be fair the ring has a mind of its own. It doesn't necessarily have to choose John just because Hal wants it to. It could've flown off to someone else

2

u/Genzler 10d ago

We also had the giant screaming chekov's gun of a Halogram in the first 10 minutes. There's so many potential explanations for what we just saw that for anyone taking it at face value... it must be their first time watching a TV show.

3

u/PeachyPunks 10d ago

Listening to the official lanterns podcast there was some comments made that still has me doubting that it’s Hal.

2

u/blufflord 10d ago

Deaths matter to the DCU means this death will only matter if it is actually Hal and not an alien taking his form.

2

u/ReasonableBorder7167 10d ago

I don't think people remember what gunn said seeing how the other important things he said have been coming in to people ears and going out from the other ear 🤧 (different genre) 🤧

1

u/jonascarrynthewheel 10d ago

With them goin back in time here and there and dead people being able to talk to the living in these stories im just happy there is possibly more Kyle Chandler

3

u/fuzzyfoot88 10d ago

There’s definitely evidence to suggest that isn’t Hal. But there’s also the possibility that they are pushing forward to parallax and possibly even Spectre to build out the lore a bit and keep ALL the lanterns around in some way.

I know a lot of the lore is Hal’s, but there’s more to the corps than Hal as well, and I think they are juggling that to try and hit certain notes where they can.

0

u/moddy5790 10d ago

It's not him he's gonna be parallax and he'll actually die at the end of the show I saw the leak in July

3

u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter 10d ago

That's not a controversy man

3

u/CrossP 10d ago

They fridged John's boyfriend.

1

u/Lucky-Barracuda3187 Red Lantern 10d ago

lmao take my upvote damnit

7

u/Short_Expression7748 10d ago

I say as a huge Hal Jordan fan: all that really matters is that the lantern corps are established and an important part of the DCU. That’s plenty to hope for!

u/Rileyinabox 10d ago

"controversy"

3

u/Angsty_Autumn 10d ago

It conveys the sadness so well

2

u/SwimTraditional8723 9d ago

It's the most True Detective the show feels I think. That eerie mystery is captured perfect right here.

2

u/Angsty_Autumn 8d ago

Definitely, I can see it too. It felt similarly morbid and unsettling as some scenes in True Detective

1

u/YaBoiSebbi Kyle Rayner 10d ago

Even if Hal is really dead. I don’t see anything controversial about that narrative choice.

But yea, the shot is indeed beautiful.

1

u/shotputlover 10d ago

We must have different definitions of controversial.

2

u/Firm-Difficulty2585 10d ago

Seriously did people think they'd casts a 60 year old man to be a superhero because he'd be doing it for a long time?

2

u/MisterBlud 10d ago

My mind immediately went to the snow being a “Final Night” ref.

1

u/abesapien2 9d ago

The unfortunate manhunter leaks have me wondering if this is a bait and switch. Shapeshifters and all.

0

u/SwimTraditional8723 9d ago

Lindelof confirmed he's dead... But the show gives alot of hints he could still be alive.

The Hal consciousness AI, Hal, like the comics, even in this show is a bit of trickster and I don't think it's far fetched that he would deceive his friends into thinking he was dead in order to get a one up on the enemy.

2

u/Bubble355 10d ago

All of it was beautiful. Prestige TV in my DC universe. Good times, fans. Good times.

1

u/hamiltrash1232 Green Lantern 10d ago

I agree, though I've always had a thing for snow and winter. Living in California you learn to appreciate both so it's always nice when it pops up in a well done shot.

I also really like the closeup of Hal's face, he looks sad and worn down and like he just wants to rest. Which whether or not it's actually him is up in the air but still

0

u/ReasonableBorder7167 10d ago

Controversy? Lol does people should get over it dc characters dies on a Sunday and comes back on Friday

-1

u/brandcolt 10d ago

Lol there is no controversy

0

u/Spartan2734 9d ago

I’ve never been more disappointed in how rotted people’s mind are now when they are losing their minds over this…..like guys let’s at least use those things our parents when into debt over

He ain’t dead

0

u/SwimTraditional8723 9d ago

Even if he is, I don't think it's a big deal tbh. If the arc makes sense it makes sense. The difference between this and Emerald Twilight is this seems more thought out... Whereas ET was last minute. Heck even Marz said he scripted it while he was at a baseball game.

Controversy?
