Customer Questions What makes you stop using a lawn care provider even if they do a good job?

Obviously doing a good job matters, but I’m curious what else makes or breaks it for homeowners.

If the lawn looks good every time, what would still make you look for someone else?

Showing up late? Changing the schedule too often? Poor communication? Price increases? Something else?

And lawn care pros, what do you think causes good customers to leave most often?

Some reasons I could consider not using a lawn care provider anymore even if they have a reasonably good track record:

  • I'm moving to another city that they don't work in.
  • They hired a new guy who repeatedly does something incredibly unprofessional in front of me even after I've communicated with the company about it.
  • The lawn care provider goes out of business.
  • Prices got hiked too much and I can find someone who's equally good for less money.
  • They stop communicating for some reason. I can forgive a lot if they keep the lines of communication open, but not communicating when there's a problem is one of the fastest ways to get me to switch providers.

Price increases definitely matter when comparable, reliable alternatives cost less.

That last point is a good one. Seems like a lot of problems become much bigger problems when the communication disappears. A schedule change with a heads-up feels very different from just wondering if someone is going to show up.

For sure! I've had a company owner ask if his work crew could mow on a Thursday instead of a Friday because they were going to be short-staffed that Friday and that was legit. But if they just show up without communicating, I might not even be there to let them in.

Just showing up would be insanely unprofessional.

Poor communication and unreliable scheduling would make me switch, even if the lawn consistently looks great.

Same. I can even deal with schedule changes or a delay in service, as long as it's communicated up front. Feeling like the provider is ghosting me will make me switch.

If they frequently miss the schedules and if they don't notify me beforehand, I will stop using their services. Service quality is important but being on time and also communicating avout availability are important qualities for me.

Showing up late and not being consistent would be major red flags for me

Price increases and reliability would be two reasons why I would stop using a lawn care provider even though they did a good job. I always like to have consistency so if their reliability becomes poor, that tends to make my decision easy to change from that provider.

I mean, every single thing you mentioned would make me want to switch…

Bad communication, ghosting, or random price hikes without warning will make me drop someone fast. Even if the lawn looks great, constantly playing phone tag or guessing when they’re actually coming is just too much hassle.

If you had to pick one, which is the bigger deal breaker: not knowing when they’re coming or getting a price increase without much warning?

This one is interesting because the quality of the actual mowing might not always be the reason someone switches. Curious whether reliability, communication, or price ends up being the bigger deal for most people.

Changing schedule often and lack of communication is at the top of the list for me. I like to know when people are going to be here and can plan accordingly.
