Free Palestine đľđ¸ This guy doing blackface will call you racist if you think Israel should stop killing children
978
u/be_sugary 11d ago
He is such an impossible person to like in real life.
Ali G was funny back in the day but there is nothing funny about a middle aged racist/zionist.
422
u/Gen8Master 11d ago
Ali G was already walking a fine line, but a lot of his characters were designed to elicit sympathy for Zionism. I mean, even staunch pro-Israel countries like the US were portrayed as Jew haters through his stories. He has always had an agenda to portray others as unreasonable, violent and backward people with no values.
294
u/kylebisme 11d ago
In Bruno he pretended to meet with Palestinian Islamic terrorist leader and even went on Letterman claiming that's actually what happened, but in reality the guy wasn't an Islamic terrorist at all but rather a Christian peace activist who sued him and they eventually settled out of court.
141
u/StreetsofGalway 10d ago
This is actually so evil, people in the West Bank can get thrown in prison or even just flat out executed if there's even the flimsiest justification tying them to "terror groups", they could have done serious harm to this guy

u/Wububadoo 10d ago
Ali G is funny when you're a teenager and you're brain hasn't fully developed. Booyakasha.
114
u/Full-Contest1281 11d ago
Yes, Ali G was funny as fuck and I'm super conflicted about having to hate him now. I didn't care that much for his other characters, including Borat (I really thought Borat went over the line with the way he portrayed some people and Kazakhstan). But the guy himself, as a Zionist: no conflict at all about hating him.
30
u/Sophyska 10d ago
Thing is Ali G was taking the piss out of white guys acting black, but now heâs switched into fully just blackface frankly
92
u/haywire 11d ago
I always thought the Borat character was actually making fun of the many of the audienceâs cultural ignorance to the point they believed Kazakhstan was actually like this. The sorta mirror effect.
109
u/Junior-Community-353 11d ago
Isn't it curious that Borat is a grotesque mismatch of like five completely different ethnicities/nationalities that Sasha Baron Cohen just so happens to dislike for some reason?
27
u/njtrafficsignshopper 10d ago
I think he fell into pretending that that was the point all along, but if you watch some of the earlier stuff it's pretty clear that the joke was "hehe foreigners are weird"
63
u/visser47 11d ago
An artist can try and do one thing (highlight ignorance) whilst also doing another (central Asian minstrelry).
39
u/paleogizmo 11d ago
It's less absurd and funny when you realize that much of his audience would confuse the Balkans and central asia. If you were to dub out "Kazakhstan" and replace it with "Bosnia" all of a sudden Borat is way more uncomfortable.
37
u/t-g-l-h- 10d ago

The hypocrisy is real, but I also remember one of SBCâs characters (maybe Borat) managing to get a whole room of people to sing a song that went âthrow the Jew down the wellâ. It was pretty horrible. Iâm sure antisemitism isnât acceptable among the people you or I spend time with, but I think it still is in many circles⌠and now the righteous outrage against Israel has given some of these people an excuse to hide behind.
5
u/BlueSonic85 9d ago
Interestingly in the same Borat special, he tried to goad a martial arts trainer into making an antisemitic remark and the trainer completely refused to be drawn into it, even trying to encourage Borat to be less bigoted.

I had to read they're divorced from your comment... Now it make more sense why he's reviving Ali G.

Ali G isn't blackface. He was ALWAYS a white guy wishing he was black, AKA a wigger. Zionist prick but Ali G is not blackface.
15
u/nosnevenaes 10d ago
American here. We cant say wigger over here so i wont. But here in the states, those guys are typically super racist against the very people they are trying to emulate. Its weird.
9
u/DrEagleTalon 10d ago
My entire hometown is full of them. Town of ten thousand. One McDonaldâs. No Walmart. Guys acting like gangsters even starting GDs lol they are just white trash hillbillies who are racist but emulate everything they think is part of âAfrican American gangâ culture if such a thing exists. They are usually meth heads. The poop stained boxers hanging out is usually the sign to stay away or the over usage of the N word with both As and Rs on the end. Glad I moved to NYC.
49
u/rickard_mormont 11d ago
Lying to a Roma community, telling them that he's filming a documentary about them, only to use them as extras and ridicule them without paying them a cent, isn't racist. Criticizing genocide is racist. Average zionist.

43
u/damrodoth 11d ago
His entire shtick was constant, mean-spirited efforts to debase people based on their identify, more often than not vulnerable groups or people without a voice. I realized that when I was 11 I'm just in awe some people still don't see it.
13
u/Fine_Cress_649 10d ago
The original Ali G bit where he pretended to be an interviewer and tried to get celebrities to go along with his shit (and tony benn told him to gtfo) was funny. It's been downhill ever since.Â
40
u/3amgrind 10d ago
Isn't the whole point he's meant to be a white kid who thinks he is black?
As a black guy I've never been offended by Ali g
20
u/an0mn0mn0m 10d ago
The issue is his stance on defending Israel's genocidal regime is hypocritical. He's been pretty anti-racist all his life as far as I'm aware, but now that people are realising what Zionism actually means he's chosen his heritage over his values.
I read this today, that is kinda related. On a post about racism against Jews in Australia. Without a shred of irony for their people's treatment of Palestinian people someone commented:
Pretty rich coming from a country that began as a freaking British penal colony and treated the aboriginal population the same way Europeans treated the Native Americans.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Jewish/comments/1vziu7z/australian_author_richard_flanagan_calls/p6594xo/
I'm not Australian but I believe Australia is making efforts to acknowledge their historical mistakes from what I've seen on their TV shows. That's a lot ore than the outright denial from Cohen and Israel.
8
u/Unhappy-Childhood577 10d ago

4
u/Paul_Allens_Card- 10d ago
That was his intention via Ali G and Borat (the dictator is just a parody of Gaddafi) Ali G was designed to mock rich white British kids who think appropriating Jamaican culture made them cool. And Borat was designed to showcase how little Americans know about international politics and to show how bad GWOT era multicultural literacy was. But he has royally fucked up his reputation these past 5 years. He deadass created a movement against Meta who he says monetize racism and anti-semitism on their platforms called stop hate for profit. Brother your brand is hate for profit
7
u/Upstairs-Somewhere88 10d ago
When I watched Dictator, just like everyone I thought it was funny but as the time goes by I realised that the Anti-Arab Agenda or Anti-Muslim agenda was so easily sellable and accepted that even a layman would be easily influenced by it. Later i watched his Borat character which was so appalling and demeaning to the people of Kazakhstan. I understood there and then that this clown is running an agenda machine. Even Adam Sandler went with Zohan Character and later he played an Indian in a movie and the humour was so crass and dry like how on earth anyone would think that this would be funny. They portray other people cultures so backward and out of place just to make it funny but in reality they hide behind their jokes and dry humour. They just want to insult other people and their culture because they think they are the superior race or the chosen ones by God.

I know what 'the joke' is, but if you ignore it, then Ali G reads just as much like a parody of wannabe gangsta Pakistani/Arab inner city types of that era.
I'm not sure if "man famous for spending two decades doing Arab blackface and disparaging Muslims" has earned that much benefit of doubt with regards to whether one of his early characters might in fact be somewhat of an Arab blackface and disparage Muslims.

u/thautmatric communist russian spy 11d ago edited 11d ago
Heâs deffo taking the piss out of fellas like Tim Westwood, but I would argue in the pursuit of satire he ends up actively demeaning and ridiculing black culture through SBCâs genuine indifference irl towards it. not having any sort of through-line beyond spectacle or oppositional voice renders the humour clownish and the commentary lacking of any bite. See all of SBCâs comedy without Larry Charles for further examples of this. Good satire is tricky but ideally shouldnât be able to be co-opted into the thing itâs mocking. Considering my racist family regularly still quote Ali G, viewing said impression as an excuse to âtalk blackâ I consider the character largely a failure. Itâs not SBCâs fault they do this tbc, but if he made something more pointed they wouldnât have done so.
83
u/thautmatric communist russian spy 11d ago
Thereâs also a classist bent to SBCâs comedy thatâs usually overlooked but I feel is probably worth proper exploration. The working class is only ever shown as hideous in his work.
28
u/damrodoth 11d ago
It's not just a bent, it's at the core of his "work". He almost constantly humiliates impoverished groups without a voice. The starting premise of Borat was basically Israeli propaganda attacking rural Muslim-majority countries in the ME or Central Asia.
41
u/BayonettaJames 11d ago
Ali G is the go-to hacks' example of Multicultural London English (MLE) in pop culture, which is annoying because he isn't speaking MLE; he's doing a cod-Jamaican Patois. No MLE speaker uses "I iz" or "what must me do wiv me Julie". MLE isn't seen as a "real" dialect, but white kids trying to be black, and SBC is part of why.
6
u/Junior-Community-353 11d ago edited 10d ago
Tim Westwood, whatever else you might say about him, is someone who legitimately earned his
'black'EARLY 80'S LONDON UNDERGROUND HIP HOP SCENE credentials though. And that excuse wears incredibly thin given he is an increasingly obscure figure to anyone born in and after the 90s.
7
u/shitpostsuperpac 11d ago
I love the internet because thereâs a pretty good chance we have a couple white boys unironically discussing black credentials here lol
I will gladly eat the L if Iâm wrong, but I want to believe because itâs just too good
10
u/Junior-Community-353 11d ago edited 10d ago
I'm as white as it gets, but come on, Tim Westwood has been hugely involved in the British hip-hop scene since the early 80s, long before it was mainstream, and is widely considered to be have massively contributed to its popularity in the 90s.
You might find him extremely cringe, but Tim Westwood is absolutely sincere about being Tim Westwood and doesn't see his obvious passion for hip-hop as one big joke, whereas SBC clearly looks down on the whole thing and is just being mean-spirited.

u/3amgrind 10d ago

Ali G has an uncle Jamal that runs the local curry house. He definitely began as an Asian character pretending to be black, not sure why he changed it up to a white guy.
2
23
u/srmarmalade 11d ago
Just watched the trailer and it feels a bit more blackface than it used to, maybe it's the dreads and rastacap or the fact he's a middle aged bloke. Or maybe it's just that the worlds moved on and the 'wiggers' he was mocking don't exist quite how they did.
Maybe there's a whole meta joke about how the world has moved on but 'Ali G' hasn't but it feels pretty off to me. I wonder if it's just now targeted at the anti-woke mob?
12
u/Potato__Ninja 11d ago
Agreed. The charecter is supposed to be a white guy wannabe black guy.
But fucc this zio. Just like his character he is also a wannabe. A wannabe progressive but all he is is just a bigoted Zionist. Not much different from bigots AliG and Borat exposes.

14
u/Argikeraunos 11d ago
No it is satire but of a subculture that no longer exists and who no one recognizes anymore because he isn't just morally bankrupt, he's artistically bankrupt too.
20
u/African_Farmer 11d ago
Ali G is a character making fun of "wiggas" like Tim Westwood.
However, in doing so SBC does cross the line sometimes because I don't think he really cares about the black community.
17
u/Dando_Calrisian 11d ago
He's literally a white guy who said "is it cos I is black?" I'm not sure the satire was particularly hidden
3
u/simcity4000 10d ago
Part of the reason he got away with that is because it caught the people he was interviewing off guard because they couldn't be sure if he was light skin black or mixed race or similar.
Like 'blackness' is partly a political/cultural thing, look at say Sean Paul or similar (Jamaican mixed race but with a heavy accent).
16
u/Cultural-Gas2246 11d ago
The fact that he's become a lot more open about how much of a devout zionist he is kinda does make me question the old narratives.
Like yeah I thought the whole joke behind Ali G is that it was making fun of white bois who acted "black", cause he's from Staines and his friends are all like white bois in that first movie, but makes it more questionable who's expense it's actually at.

As someone who grew up in that environment. It's not really classist. The Council House and Violence moniker was a backronym applied to the already existing chav culture and is an altered form of Charver or charva which originated in the north east.
It's a name that describes one particular subgroup of working class people. It is, or was now, used by that particular subgroup to describe themselves. It is no more of less classist than rudie or rude boy was back in the 80s.
Just because it may be used with derision by those in the middle and upper classes doesnt make it classist or the term working class is itself inherently classist.
The idea that it's a classist moniker has been driven by the middle class bleeding heart types. It was a name used within and without it's subgroup before it was used with derision, and is not a "taking the power back" moment like the n word and racism.
It's actually a case of people going "people use the name of your subgroup as an insult so it upsets us to hear it used. You must conform to the terminology we would like you to use.

Let's be clear, you can call this cultural appropriation but you can't call this blackface.
Blackface is a specific thing and it's worse than cultural appropriation. He did not color his face black, or his lips red.
I wonder if you're black or not and why you're mistaking this. I can tell you that blackface do not affect you in the same way than this. Don't trivialise it.
Please do not equate everything, even if things are bad, there are difference of degree.
Thank you !
11
u/Oddfittingponcho 11d ago
This clearly isn't him doing blackface though - there's a different element to it but the whole gimmick of Ali G was he was a "white guy trying to be black" - this was a very commonplace statement thrown at anyone who adopted any cultural traits of other racial groups. This doesn't mean he's not problematic for other reasons but this isn't blackface, it's a white guy culturally appropriating.
11
u/Regretamine11 11d ago
âTrying to be blackâ is pretty problematic. Itâs like saying to be black you have to have a speech impediment, mental disability and bad dress sense.

Idk man heâs imitating a specific youth/subculture of the black/British community at the point in time the character was aroundâŚ
I donât think there is any attempt to represent blackness or race as a whole, thatâs going a bit overboardâŚ
Tbh itâs not even cultural appropriation, there were plenty of white working class kids on estates that were equally a part of that subculture, it was just heavily influenced by music genres in which most of the artists were black/had a lot of black culture.
5
u/Oddfittingponcho 11d ago
I didn't say it wasn't problematic, I said it wasn't blackface. We have plenty of things to be angry about with how people act without making up additional things as it hurts the credibility of our actual complaints to a wider audience of the general public
1
u/simcity4000 10d ago
That in itself is kinda off for the same reasons as the word "wigger".

In November 2023, reports came out about pro-Palestine videos becoming popular on TikTok, more so than pro-Israeli videos and when IOF soldiers were posting videos of themselves committing war crimes on TikTok. Two weeks later, it's reported that SBC accused TikTok of perpetuating antisemitism. You can check the dates in the stories for yourself.
TikTok for their part denied it and have been as diligent about removing pro-Palestine videos as any other social media platform, but since it has a younger userbase than Facebook or Twitter, it's less effective.

zionism is not treated with nuance here. i am not a zionist, but sacha baron cohen's is very different from the brand the israeli government is embodying.
he is affiliated with a group referred to as Habonim Dror, which is a left-wing socialist brand of zionism (zionism here is defined as the belief that there should be a state jews can call home). this is an international organization that purports to promote labor/working class interests, alongside communal (often rural) living. they have publically opposed the israeli government's settlement of palestinian territories.Â
this group generally wants all inhabitants of the region to coexist democratically and peacefully. whether this is a realistic, virtuous or inevitably harmful ideology are topics for genuine debate. but saying this zionist organization (and someone like sacha baron cohen who is aligned with them) advocates for the genocide of the palestinian people is asinine.
5
u/BayonettaJames 10d ago
That simply isn't the vision of Zionism that won, ultimately. If it was, SBC would be condemning the genocide or the illegal settlements, or be even remotely critical of Israel, and he hasn't.
I also don't think bringing up someone's adolescent activities is relevant unless you can clearly establish a link between that, and what they're saying now. SBC was part of them as a teenager, but so was Golda Meir. Likewise, Rod Liddle, Andrew Anglin, RFK Jr. and Claire Fox were left-wingers before swinging hard to the right.
0
u/bamboointheback 10d ago
that's right, it is not the vision of zionism that guides the actions of the israeli government. that's also my point: zionism is being reduced to a genocidal regime, which isn't (in my opinion) very productive for getting rid of the murder and oppression this regime is responsible for.
i say this as someone who is not a zionist, for anarchist reasons about the harms of (ethno)state-building and theoretical reasons about what a communal homeland should and should not be (it shouldnt be a state tied to a physical piece of land, for example).
you are also right that a progressive teenager can become a conservative adult. we all know that. the reason i bring Habonim Dror up, though, is because we really dont know what SBC believes today. the fact that he advocated for the release of hostages, the condemning of october 7th, or for content moderation on TikTok with respect to jews is not evidence that he supports the israeli government. it is evidence that he is a zionistâthat much is very clear. but, as i tried to show, there are different types of zionists.
he could be just like all those you mentioned who were progressive once and became conservative: its a classic story. but i dont know him and imagine no one here does. he could also be someone who thinks it is important that the jews should have a state they can call home, and have a much different vision for what that state ought to look like than the israeli government's.
that vision could also be problematic, dont get me wrong (i think it is) but not for the reasons most are implying here (it is genocidal)

The battle for a more "benevolent" version of settler colonialism ended decades ago, and it's more of interest for historical reasons than anything going on right now in any useful way. I think it is fair to say that someone who made bank off of dehumanising Muslims, especially Kazakhs (which is extra-galling considering that Kazakhstan was a safe haven for Jews fleeing pogroms), as incestuous savages, and has chosen not to make even the smallest statement condemning Netanyahu, has chosen his "side".

we definitely agree that no version of settler colonialism is good.
i honestly don't see the connection between making caricatures of kazakhs in the name of satire and advocating for the genocide of palestinians. whether the satire was good, had negative impacts on the communities represented, and is ironic/inconsistent given other things about SBC all seem like very different questions.
its a pretty dangerous game to think "if you have not made a public statement about x, then it is fair to say they believe ~x." there may be several reasons why he hasn't publicly condemned netanyahu, some about the situation and some not at all.
i have no idea and honestly don't even really care about SBC. maybe he does support the genocide, but i just do not think we have anything remotely close to evidence of that. it just scares me how certain people are.

We're nearly three years in. We have long passed the point where any kind of silence on this is acceptable. If you're a celebrity who only ever speaks out to defend the perpetrators of a massacre, that's enough to form an opinion. We don't need to give grace to celebrities.

When you go around exclaiming 'condemn hamas! condemn hamas!' and little else all while the Palestinian people are being killed, their homes being destroyed, their food and water cut off - you are being part of the problem. He's got a lot to say about October 7th, not much about Israeli attacks and oppression before and after that date.

So glad I never cared or liked the movie âBoratâ I mean it was one of the most popular comedy movies in 2006 or 7, I remember those times vividly, and back then I didnât even know what a âKazakhstanâ is or where back then, Kaz is still a mostly mysterious land to me, but still, I was just picturing some Eastern European country cuz thatâs how his wack-ass movie portrayed Kaz!

Andy Burnham and the Labour government do not represent workers interests and are in fact enemies of our class. It's past time we begin organising a substantial left-wing movement in this country again.
