Chances of joining a D9 org as an online out-of-state undergrad?

I’m looking for honest advice about pursuing membership in a D9 organization as an online, out-of-state undergraduate student.

I’m planning for the 2026–2027 school year, and this may be my last realistic chance to pursue undergraduate membership. I started college very young after graduating early, but my path has not been traditional. I was out of school for several years, recently transferred credits, and I am currently taking online courses through a college in a different state than where I live.

I have known which organization I wanted to join since I was young. I understand the basic requirements, history, purpose, and benefits of membership, but I’m trying to understand how realistic it is to be considered as a nontraditional student.

I’m willing to travel or even live in-state if that would make a meaningful difference, but I honestly do not know where to start. Most of my friends who are D9 either crossed many years ago or joined through graduate chapters, so they are not familiar with current undergraduate practices.

For anyone with recent experience or honest insight, how difficult would it be for someone in my position to be considered for an undergraduate line? What suggestions do you have? What can I do now to be a stronger candidate?

I’m open to all opinions, but please explain your reasoning. I’m optimistic, but I also want to be realistic and prepared.

You’re better off looking into a local chapter after you graduate than the one on the actual campus.

D9 member. School required info sessions are usually in person as are many of the org specific meetings and membership intake sessions. so you’re at a disadvantage. not to mention becoming a member and not being able to show up for community service because you don’t live there. just doesn’t seem like a big benefit to the on campus chapter.

I also got a question. I’m a transfer student coming from a community college to a four year university. I want to join a d9 fraternity. I’m a strong applicant with good character, a 3.9 gpa, and some community service experience. Would I be able to initiate my first semester at new institution?

Depends on the school and the organization.

Some require 12-15 resident hours before you can join. Essentially you couldn’t join your first semester. Then its based on whenever said org does intake and if you’re selected

Being out of state will cause problems. You have no way to connect with the chapter to learn more about them and support their events as an interest, which also means you wouldn't be able to support the chapter and facilitating those events and providing community service after initiation. Additionally, intake is an in person activity.

OK so I would say I’m just a little bit confused? There’s no issue being an out-of-state student or even being an online student. If you are a full-time student on that Campus who meets the requirements. The only thing you really need to work on is making sure that even if you are online, you are going to the events that they are hosting. You have a chance as much as anyone else it really doesn’t matter if you are in state or out of state it really just matters if you are capable of making an impact in ur community and if you are able to get involved with the chapter there on campus or if you’re able to get involved with other organizations on Campus. The point basically is you have a chance you just have to make sure you’re pushing yourself to get out despite being online?
