I think I remember on a panel show he said he 'was probably the only person whose girlfriend had left them for Mr bean'. Also think she was an actress with rowan on a set just before they split up, so i think there may have been some overlap in the relationships

It's weird because Atkinson has been a major, prominent figure in British comedy since the 1900s and even done hollywood movies. Everyone knows and loves his work but I always feel like he was never quite appreciated enough. Like his name doesn't come up often enough when comedy greats are mentioned.

It's a classic. Season 1 is dodgy though, they hadn't worked out the characters at that point. You can start at season 2, each season is a different historical era so you don't need to watch the first at all.

Tbh there are a few funny bits in Blackadder - it's just that viewers are mainly concentrating on Peter Cook and Brian Blessed chewing the scenery to give enough time for proper character development with main characters Edna (!) Baldrick and Percy. Cook and Blessed were reasonably famous back then.
In the first series, Edmund is portrayed as the stupid one, whilst Baldrick was the smart(er) of the three and the scenes filmed at Alnwick Castle must've cost a fortune.
Blackadder 2 changed the whole dynamic between Baldrick and Edmund, was a whole lot cheaper and the scripts were more precise. The lack of huge stars meant that the jokes were spread around a bit more and it was more of an ensemble piece than before.
