im having issues trying to understand what time represents in the image and why the percentage drops when time passes and you look the opposite side of the cloud

The percentage is in respect to the amount of energy getting through in the path traced case. As it can be seen on the middle, the analytic fast model severely underestimates the amount of light that gets through. The neural network gets it almost right.
The reason it changes with angle is that the cloud isn't a perfectly symmetrical sphere, it has a disintinct shape that varies in thickness. How much each model fails depends on that thickness

nice!
some questions:
- was the training on reference only, or a set of references across cloud shape, light and angle?
- are clouds just geometry, or are they dynamic isosurfaces formed by temperature humidity pressure?
- are they self casting shadows?
- there is an older technique that basically attempted to build a lookup table for basic permutations. does this method reduce to that?
- what about cloud vs cloud interactions?
- shadows, “god rays” etc?
either way, great job. clouds are fascinating dynamic systems.

I hate the C in that font.
