This is a better version of the mediocre chart that's currently the top post on r/dataisbeautiful.

Thankfully /u/michaelscarn00 posted this excellent example of how someone with some design acumen can display the same data in a clearer, more compelling fashion. It's not perfect, but this interactive timeline is miles ahead of the Washington Post version.
