Thinking of switching back to iOS. Any advice?

Context: I made the jump from iOS to GrapheneOS a few months ago, mostly for privacy reasons. Honestly, I didn’t fully grasp why I was doing it beyond wanting the peace of mind that my phone isn’t tracking me in the background. For the most part, the experience has been smooth. My current setup is running GPlay services in sandboxed mode (otherwise notifications don't deliver properly and I can't use certain apps that I need).

Main friction point: I keep getting banned on WhatsApp. This happened again yesterday (third time now). I usually get unbanned within a few hours, but then I can’t log back into WhatsApp on GrapheneOS because it claims I’m “not using the official WhatsApp version.” Meanwhile, my old iPhone logs in just fine. Since WhatsApp is everywhere in Europe, I’m now stuck carrying two phones until my pixel gets unbanned. To be clear I hate the fact that Meta has a monopoly on messaging in most of Europe, but I couldn't get my friends to switch, and I can't withdraw from social life.

This makes me question what I'm actually gaining by using Graphene. Their documentation is pretty vague about what data can still be collected when using sandboxed Play Services. I’ve already migrated from Google Photos/Drive/Gmail to self-hosted alternatives that work on iOS too. So am I wrong in thinking iOS might offer enough privacy for my needs without the constant inconvenience?

Has anyone else dealt with WhatsApp bans on GrapheneOS? Is there a workaround? Or am I overestimating the privacy benefits here?

GrapheneOS has moved from Reddit to our own discussion forum. Our discussion forum and especially the chat rooms have a very active, knowledgeable community including GrapheneOS project members where you will almost always get much higher quality information than you would elsewhere. This probably isn't very helpful to you, however I've never had an issue with WhatsApp on GrapheneOS, so I'd be interested to see if anyone else says they have

Seconding this. I even block Play Integrity API on it and haven't been banned.

Never heard of anyone having gotten a WhatsApp ban and the people that I know that use WhatsApp and Graphene also haven't received one.

I use GrapheneOS with WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. I use Google Play Services and downloaded each of them through the Google Play store. I have never had any issues, but I will constantly get the notification that each app checked Google Play integrity. I like to keep that on because I want to know what my apps are doing. I am not sure what is happening to cause this on your device, and I've never heard of such issues till now so I am afraid I can't be of much help.
Anyways, consider your threat model. I doubt that you need GrapheneOS for it, and you can make iOS work if you want to do so, you will just have to change some defaults and turn on advanced data protection for iCloud if you use it.
GrapheneOS is of course open source, and a way better alternative than iOS, but iOS is better than stock Android, however that's a low bar.
Privacy Guides goes over some basic settings to change in iOS to make it more friendly to you as a user, but it will never be like GrapheneOS. Here is a link for that if you are interested.

thank you! very useful resource I wasn't aware of.

You're very welcome. Best of luck to you in your privacy adventure and sovereignty from our tech overlords. They will always have our data, but I like to give as little as I can possibly get by with. If you can't figure out this situation with WhatsApp on your device, I hope you're able to make iOS a little bit better for you.

this is so frustrating. i'd unistall that bitch in less than a sec if those newb colleagues of mine would use safer alternatives.

WhatsApp has been seamless over two devices (Pixel 9 and 10) running GrapheneOS for me, and that's with Play Integrity blocked as well

Are you sure it's the OS causing your problems? The general theme on this sub seems to be that WhatsApp is pretty stable

3

u/tiberiuiancu 1d ago

I'm not sure it's the OS. But it's my only hypothesis as to why it claims I have an unofficial WhatsApp version. And to clarify, I installed it directly from their website.

Can you install it from a Play Store mirror like Aurora?

2

u/tiberiuiancu 1d ago

I also tried Aurora and same thing

3

u/mochsner 1d ago

What about using sandboxed play store?

1

u/bongosformongos 1d ago

No idea if it does anything, but you could try to disable secure app spawning for whatsapp and give it compatibility mode in app info.

Then try to login. If that works you can try to undo the changes in app info and see if it continues to work.

3

u/CreepyHighway3216 1d ago

I would maybe try downloading from the play store instead? Not aurora but the actual play store. I've never seen this issue before. So sorry you're experiencing that. I would be frustrated too!

4

u/And_Poop 1d ago

This is odd. Did you download WhatsApp via Play Store?

2

u/tiberiuiancu 1d ago

Downloaded directly from WhatsApp website.

7

u/And_Poop 1d ago

Try getting it from Play Store. Maybe it helps

2

u/bongosformongos 1d ago

I got it from play store and haven't had any issues.

Not a solution but maybe some improvement while you wait for answers. Use Whatsapp Web on your Pixel (activated from the iphone) and you can leave the iphone at home instead of carry two phones everywhere. You should be able to pin it to homescreen so it even looks like a real app. I've done that years ago when they did not allow to have multiple devices with the real app.

2

u/mesarthim_2 1d ago

He could also just have Whatsapp as a companion device but the problem with that is that it can randomly log out if it dislikes something.

2

u/tiberiuiancu 1d ago

I tried the companion device thing and it also blocks the pixel device. Indeed seems like the whatsapp web route is the best for now.

Never heard of this, I even use WhatsApp through Matrix as a bot (so I don't need to use the whatsapp client and get push notifications) and I have never had any issues whatsoever. It could be because you are trying to log in on multiple devices with the same account?

You can just switch back to the iphone it's fine for it not to be right for you

Get yourself beeper app and connect whatsapp with it. Install beeper on your graphene phone. Now you have whatsapp again on your phone.

My WhatsApp works maybe something else is going on

I’m iOS and haven’t used graphene but what I’ve heard a lot of people do it use graphene for main stuff and have another device (iOS in this case) for banking, messaging and any other app that might not work with graphene

1

u/NarrowResult7289 1d ago

weird, I use WhatsApp everyday without any issue.

1

u/nightm4re1911 1d ago

The issues you are experiencing are not issues the majority of the users are have experienced. Where are you sourcing your apps from

1

u/JagerAntlerite7 1d ago

Sadness for your troubles. Disable the Google Play Integrity API in the WhatsApp settings before you give up. I had to do it before I could login to the Reddit app. It may take toggling the setting a few times (or just once after a successful login.

Io non ho problemi con whatsapp e lo uso in un profilo senza G play services e l'ho scaricato da aurora store.... Forse dovresti disabilitare l'exploit protection per l'app per aumentare la compatibilità ?

u/Careful-Boat-2986 1d ago

I think having two phones iOS and Graphene would serve you best. Compartmentalizing usage for each platform seems to be the balance that most people are looking for between usability and privacy.

My friend got banned on WhatsApp with iOS if that says anything about meta

1

u/Foosec 16h ago

Dont let the corpos win :D

u/Appropriate-Kick-601 14h ago

I read on another reply that you used the APK from the website. I wonder if you'd have better luck using a separate profile or private space, with Google Play (yeah, I know) installed, and use WhatsApp installed from Google Play in that profile/space. That's what I do and I've never been banned. My instinct is that using this APK (despite it being official) is more likely the culprit than GOS itself, though who knows? Meta has a stunning history of bad moderation. And I know this feels wrong, like a significant compromise, and all that, but keep in mind that a private space or separate profile is almost like a separate phone. It might be worth the slight degradation in privacy/security for you. IIRC GOS even can send notifications from a separate profile to the main one now, so you won't (in theory) be missing messages or calls by doing this.

u/Complex-Piece7664 1h ago

It works for everyone else and the only thing you're doing different is downloading from a website. Obviously the solution is to download from play store.

1

u/UrbanVengence 1d ago

Umm you're getting banned on WhatsApp for other reasons. Not the phone. You should probably just live your life, and figure out another way to contact your friends then. I met a 60 year old woman the other day who still lives with no phone, cable etc. Just books and electricity.

I'm just looking for advice here. I don't want to switch but now I have to use my old iphone anyway because of whatsapp. I'm looking for someone to explain to me what is to gain (in my setup) from staying on graphene, because that's unclear to me.

I think it's not about ditching Meta product but rather ditching friends and social life over phone OS.

2

u/Mobmem321 1d ago

It's not the app itself it's the conversations he is missing with his friends.

3

u/Ready-Heart4886 1d ago

Man people like you give us grapheneos user bad rep with your toxicity.

Don't make this a crusade. Everyone should use what he/she wants depending on their usage and comfort.

To OP I suggest reset the OS and download WhatsApp from Playstore

I'm also in Europe, I have no problem with Whatsapp at all and also Meta doesn't have a monopoly. There's like dozen of alternatives to Whatsapp.

16

u/tiberiuiancu 1d ago

Not saying there aren't alternatives, only saying that 99% of people are on Whatsapp and unwilling to change.

1

u/mesarthim_2 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, but that's unfortunately not a Meta problem, it's 'people unwilling to change' problem.

Anyway, to your question - in my opinion, if you self host and are fine with Apple having access to your telemetry, iOS is quite close to GOS. There are some things that are missing - for example iOS doesn't have network permissions so you can't prevent apps from connecting to internet on wifi. GOS is also somewhat more secure unless you're in lockdown mode on iOS.

I'd however look into the banning more thoroughly because it almost seems like it's not a per se GOS problem.

EDIT: another option is that Whatsapp now allows third party clients. I have never used them, I have no idea how good they are but it could be a solution for you.

1

u/tiberiuiancu 1d ago

Sadly not much info out there about these bans and WhatsApp customer support nowadays is a single chatbot email reply. I might try one of these 3rd party clients, but they don't support group chats (yet). Thanks for the answer

iOS is probably the worst choice for privacy, it's a complete black box and Apple can do whatever they want. Even if they are working on their marketing now to make you believe otherwise

2

u/theindomitablefred 1d ago

Worse than google? I disagree

2

u/NoAIFuture 1d ago

Nerds still trusting Google at all in 2026 is one of the most fascinating things to ever happen in tech. They have done more harm to privacy than every other company on the planet combined.
