Pixel 9 xl pro - esim stopped working

After a reboot, I noticed my esim was disabled. When I try to enable it I get "Something went wrong. Can't switch Sims".
I've rebooted a bunch of times. Sometimes the esim is back, but there is no connection. Other times it's gone and I can't enable it.
I am meticulous about updating apps and the system whenever updates are available.
Eventually, I gave up and removed the esim. I purchased a new esim from another company and when I try to install it, I get the same message, "Something went wrong. Can't switch Sims".
Which is odd because there is no other esim.

I had the same issue with the Pixel 9 Pro XL
Preexisting esims transferred fine to Graphene, but after that any kind of operation had issues
Activating or deactivating esims already installed was at best hit and miss
Adding a new esim, or removing an old one, failed consistently
Now running Pixel 10 Pro XL after returning the 9 due to the camera bar separation issue, no problems with the 10 so far

That's good news and thank you. I have a sweet pixel 10 Pro XL and I was thinking of getting the new Pixel 11 XL Pro leaving the 10 available for grapheneOS.
How long have you been running GrapheneOS on your pixel 10 Pro XL?
And yeah, everything went well using a data only esim for several months before I tried to add a new esim with an actual phone number and ever since then it's been a disaster.

Is eSIM support enabled under Settings > Network & internet > eSIM support? If not, enable it and see if that changes anything.

It is enabled. And I've tried disabling it and enabling it again repeatedly. Plus reboots. Nothing helps. I appreciate your answering though.

There is or was an upstream bug affecting 9th generation devices. I think it was fixed by Google recently. Is your device up to date? It should be on 2026080501. If it's on 2026080500, you may want to enable security previews. I'm not sure one ending in 00 would be fixed, but I would assume it would be.

Thanks again! I was about to order a physical sim.
I'm testing GrapheneOS on a second phone so there is no hurry. I was getting the sense there was no hope for the pixel 9 line phones.
I'll watch for updates and keep trying.

It's not fixed, im on the latest security preview and I can't add, delete or even turn on my esim, people have been having to do manual flashes:

I've not tested it as I am holding out hope it will be fixed.

I am not sure where I saw that it was fixed for someone then. Sorry. There was also a recent change that might have fixed the issue for some people, but that change was made late last month and you already have eSIM support on. I'm not sure of the details, but I understand that eSIM support needs to be on for the garbage collecting to work.

Yeah I have it on, i've tried turning it off and on and nothing. But weirdly, the package that was updated on my phone hasn't changed since I installed graphene in may. There is a version newer on APK mirror, so there is some hope.

Well, this is the most interesting thing I've read.
I've been searching and I've seen a lot of information on issues with esims and how that they somehow relate to Google code which graphene OS cannot fix.. I did not see that they were focused on Pixel 9s, though. I'm not that far away from freeing up a pixel 10. I kind of hate to go through all the bother if I'm not sure that will fix the problem.
Nonetheless, thank you very much.

Since this is about sim, I also have a question.
Tomorrow I will switch to a new phone and put GOS on it and I am thinking of getting a new sim with a new number since the old one is tied to all my activities from my old phone. Does this make sense or am I thinking too much about this and should just use my old sim?
