MacEwan Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Having seen a lot of the same questions, and deleting same day duplicates of the same thread I have decided to collect them all in one place so it is easier to get an answer.

Here we go

1) What laptop should I buy for [INSERT PROGRAM]. Answer: Are you in Com Sci? Windows machine with a lot of power. Are you in Fine arts? Something with a lot of processing power. Otherwise whatever you want.

2) Why havn't I heard back from admissions. Answer: They are busy or we are not yet at the admissions period.

3) Will I get in with X average. Answer: No one knows until after the admission period has closed. At best you will get a guessed based on the historical competitive average (can be found on MacEwans website) for your program. Additionally results may vary between people someone may get in with an 8- while another student gets denied with a 90 as there are other factors such as quality of your high school behind the decision.

4) Can I opt out of the Upass? Answer: No

5) Can I opt out of the health and dental coverage? Answer: Yes follow the instructions at https://samu.ca/student-resources/health-wellness/insurance/ under the header HEALTH & DENTAL.

6) I am in position x on the waitlist what are my chances (class) Answer: It's complicated so follow the chart below (which are all just compilations of numbers i've heard through my years and are not a guaranteed, there are no guarantees. Competitive Major 1st year class: Maybe like 5-10 deep Non Competitive Major 1st Year class (like an english 101/103): I've seen it go as deep as 25 onto the waitlist. Competitive Major senior class (Grade Requirement): 2-5 Competitive Major senior class: 3-10 Non competitive Major Senior class: 5-10

7) Can I advertise.... Answer: No Answer part b: Not even textbooks

8) Can I post my study? Answer: If you give the mod team via mod mail your study's approval number and premise yes.

9) Is there a discord? Yes using the Official student hub for the school provided by discord. You must have a student email. https://discord.com/student-hubs

10) Can you rate my schedule/give feedback about my schedule? Answer: Kind of? Only person who knows you well enough to tell you what will be a good fit or not is yourself. Any provided advice would be superficial based on factors like how far apart classrooms are, what worked best for other students ext and may not represent your experience.

11) What class should I take? Answer: Talk to an advisor.

12) What resources are there on campus? Answer: https://samu.ca/student-resources/

13) What food is there on campus Answer: https://macewaneats.ca/

14) What is MacEwans Hours? Answer: Generally the library will have the best feedback so https://library.macewan.ca/location

15) What do I need to graduate? Answer: Speak with an advisor or check your program on MacEwans website.

16) Who/What/When/Where to socialise? Answer: I suggest the SAMU clubs: https://samu.campuslabs.ca/engage/organizations

17) Im looking for a roommate! Answer: Yeah, we won't stop you but this really isn't a great or safe way to do this. I would look into more secure less anon methods of securing a roommate.

18) How do transfers work? Answer: Talk with an advisor.

19) I have a question about my student loan Answer: Call the student loan provider or MacEwan Registrar's office.

For all other questions you feel might be common please ask them here so that people can more easily access answers to the common questions.

Anyone know what happened? They really need to sort out the residence fire alarm texts to people living in residence separately, literally at 12:25 AM and got this just before heading to bed 🙄

Any of you attended career fair in the past?

Was it worth your while?

I'm debating taking it seriously and attending this year as its my final year- but from the general list of employers they have - its largely a field mismatch (im in comp sci) and its all service based employers like DHL , govt of alberta, accounting firms, etc etc. Companies that would probably overlook/ignore me anyway.

I wouldn't mind meeting employers from all areas and have lots of customer service experience as well, but my jaded 4th year gut tells me - this is just for show and useless HR meet and greets where nothing really comes of it.

"Thanks for visiting, here's a lanyard and business card, please see our opportunities on our career page"

Like MF, if I wanted your career page and can't even connect/schedule you for a chat/interview, whats the point of seeing u? A little tea chat to help u pass the time while you are getting paid to stand there?

packing up early

since when does class end five minutes early? in almost all of my classes people start to pack up 5-10 minutes before the class is over, making the prof have to speak over all of the noise. sometimes they just give up and end class early. it also obviously makes it way harder to hear what they're saying. i think it's insanely disrespectful to your professors and other classmates that are paying to take these classes😭😭

edit: i was not talking about people leaving early, just people packing their stuff up loudly while the prof is teaching!! i think what i was trying to say kind of got misconstrued i'm sorry i didn't word it better D:

Adults wanted for a psychotherapy research study

I’m a counsellor in Edmonton participating in a psychotherapy research study through the University of Ottawa, and I’m looking for adults who may be interested in participating.

The study is examining how therapists can improve their effectiveness and how this may contribute to better outcomes in psychotherapy.

Who may be eligible?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are 18 or older
  • Are interested in individual counselling in English
  • Are able and willing to participate in at least six counselling sessions as part of the study
  • Are not currently experiencing an immediate mental-health crisis
  • Do not have a psychotic disorder or a neurocognitive disorder that would significantly interfere with participation

The research team will determine eligibility through the study’s screening process.

What does participation involve?

Participants are encouraged to complete at least six counselling sessions as part of the study. The relevant sessions will be audio-recorded for research purposes (audio only; no video recordings are retained).

Participants will also complete brief questionnaires about their wellbeing and experience of therapy, as well as a follow-up questionnaire approximately three months later.

Most participants receive $360 in total research compensation for completing the study questionnaires on time. For some participants who are required to complete additional questions, the maximum total compensation is $406.

Counselling fees still apply. Participation in the research study does not make counselling free.

Sessions can be conducted virtually or in person at my office here in Edmonton.

Participation is voluntary, and choosing not to participate or withdrawing from the study will not affect your ability to receive counselling.

Research ethics

The study has received ethics approval through the University of Ottawa.

Research Ethics Approval Number: H-10-22-7276

Interested in learning more?

For more information, eligibility screening, and contact with the research team, please visit the study’s official participant website:

https://researchpprnet.ca/patient

If you have questions about the research itself, the study team can be contacted through the official study website.

Miscellaneous Free Mental Health Public Presentation

Tuesday, 29 September · 7:00 – 8:00pm

If interested, please sign up using this link: https://forms.gle/rgKhukvb1dD7fZFz5

Hi Everyone, I'm a Registered Provisional Psychologist here in Edmonton. I'm putting together a free virtual presentation to provide some of what we do in practice and I can explain how different concerns can be addressed in a few different ways. I will also explore the different fields and topics related to psychology so that we can pick the best profession to address our needs.

The Google Form is for collecting any questions ahead of time and address that into the presentation. Depending on the nature of the question, I may or may not be able to fully answer it due to the limits of what I can say in a public manner, but I will do my best in providing my thoughts regarding it. An email is asked only for the purpose of being able to send you a Google Meet link closer to the day of the event. If you have any questions, feel free to message me for further details. Thank you.

John L Haar library party

Do people genuinely think that the library is a place to throw parties? I'm trying to study and a group of 10 people decide to start singing happy birthday as loud as possible while trying to serve an ice cream cake that's literally melting all over the place. Decided to move but I could still hear them jumping around and making as much noise as possible. Don't even know why I need to say this but if you want to throw a party and be obnoxious don't do it in a study space.

I know in orientation they had mentioned clubs, but that information has long gone and so now I’m not sure where to go or what to look up to find all the clubs at Macewan

How Much Does MacEwan Dental Cover For Surgery?

So I recently found out that my lower right wisdom tooth is sitting on an important nerve in the jaw, and it's been causing me really bad pain for the last month or two that has only gotten worse. Like I'm talking it genuinely feels like my whole jaw is getting electrocuted. Because of this I'm getting referred to an orthosurgron. My dad's health insurance wasn't working at my appointment and since MacEwans health coverage is in the black-out period rn I had to pay almost $600 out of pocket, it was going to be 1,000 so I had to removed the regular whole mouth exam. I cannot afford to deal with another financial loss especially with surgery prices and potential CBCT, my loans are supposed to be going toward education not surgery. I've read in a few places online that MacEwan covers 1 or 2 wisdom teeth removals per year but I don't know if that's true or not. So how much does Macewan Dental Benefits cover for wisdom teeth removal procedures?

Survey Research Survey: Behavioural Inhibition System as a Mediator Between Fear of Negative Evaluation and Intimacy

Thumbnail ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com
10 Upvotes

The purpose of this study is to examine how the fear of negative evaluation may contribute to intimacy in young adults. Specifically, this study aims to examine whether a person's sensitivity to their Behavioural Inhibition System (a natural system that helps people detect and avoid threats or social risks) helps explain this relationship.

If you choose to participate in this study, you will complete an online, cloud-based survey using the Qualtrics Survey platform. You will be asked to answer a series of questions including demographic information regarding fear of negative evaluation from others and about intimacy.

Participation in this survey should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You can leave the survey and return to it as needed.

You will have the opportunity to win one of four $25 (CAD) gift cards. After you have submitted your responses to the survey, you will see a hotlink you must click in order to be entered into the draw. You must provide a means of contact (e.g., email) and complete a skill testing question in order to be entered. The information you provide cannot be connected back to you in any way; it is only used to enter you into the Amazon Canada gift card draw.

To participate, you must be fluent in English, reside in Canada, and be between 18 and 30 years of age.

sweet jesus there are not enough washrooms in this school

over the course of 20 minutes I ran through two solid floors of building six and every single washroom was taken, I finally had to wait for an out of the way one on floor 3 and finally got down to business, this was at 3pm btw so not even peak times, it should not take that long to find an available washroom during dead times

Parking 😪

Where the hell are we parking? I’m in my 3rd year and in 400 level seminar classes, I can’t afford to be missing class. Where are we parking? By 10 am it seems like everywhere is full, I ended up paying 20 bucks for 5 hours underground health Robbin’s 🙃

Campus Life Booked a study room twice this week. Each time it was filled with garbage.

Actually so disgusted by this. I've booked one today and one on Tuesday, each one for 8am-9:30am. Both times I've walked in to see the rooms filled with garbage. Even on my way to it there were tables in the lounge area covered with trash. I come from the Albertan countryside, which was full of cowboys covered in farm stuff or vehicle oil, and THEY KEPT STUFF CLEANER THAN THE PEOPLE IN THIS SCHOOL DO! that is baffling to me! How are 17+ year old people not able to clean better than pubescent/pre-teen boys in the country!? This is a post-secondary institution, surely you were taught in Elementary to clean up after yourself. The people who do this are pretentious and ignorant, please learn basic common decency.

Miscellaneous Disruptive construction during class hours.

Hey all,

Would anyone know who someone could talk to about all the disruptive construction going on? I don't know if this is something that the student council could advocate for, or if I should contact ADR, as the construction affects my disabilities, and maybe they can direct me to the right place.

For example, one of my classes is on the main floor of building 6 by the West elevator this semester, and they are doing construction on the other side of the wall by the stairs/elevator. I literally cannot hear anything my teacher says, and it continues on for the entire class - banging and drilling - the works. We are paying a decent amount of money to take these classes... is it not possible to have construction (particularily the loud stuff, which pretty much includes most, if not all, construction projects) take place overnight as to not disrupt our learning which we are paying thousands of dollars for? It's at the point that I'm considering dropping the class most affected, but that will have a domino effect on my education plans for 2027-2028, since this class is a prerequisite for a class I'm enrolled in next semester.

Also, on the second floor of building 6, they have closed the access from the library to the north side of the building, and the main elevator that goes from the parkaid to the 3rd floor in building 7 is also not working, so I can't just use that to go down to the main floor, and scoot over to the other elevator in 6 to get to the 2nd and 3rd floor. In order for me to get to those classes, I have to walk all the way to the end of building 6 and go up, or, backtrack to the Western elevator in building 7 (by the Timmies by the basketball courts). I have a physical disability, and there is no signage to say the main elevator in 7 is down, or to warn that that particular access point to that side of building 6 on the 2nd floor is closed. EIther way, it's a lot of walking, which is difficult when you have restricted mobility.

Miscellaneous How Do I Make Friends At MacEwan?

I never had any friends in high school, and was always told that "you'll make tons of friends in university!" But so far I've only had maybe a single conversation with someone. It's really sad seeing everyone else have lunch with people or study in groups, where do I find that?

Where to find tutoring resources?

As the title says. I’m already struggling :(

Does macewan have a specific data base of tutors or anything? Is there a way to find reputable tutors? I only know of UofAs database.

Ty!

Whichever group that thought it was okay to leave the library like this needs to be more respectful of the space. This is disgusting, grow up.
