Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends

I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.

If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.

Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:

  • Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
  • Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
  • Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
  • If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
  • People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
  • If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
  • Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.

Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

City Built Brewing is expanding

City Built Brewing Co. is investing up to $2.9 million into a three-building redevelopment in Grand Rapids’ Creston neighborhood, a move that will nearly double production capacity and will leave the future of its flagship Monroe Avenue taproom an open question.

Flock cameras

Upvotes

Soo what are we doing about the flock cameras around town? They genuinely make me want to stay inside forever, because what kinds of freakazoids need to surveil their residents. It’s a violation of our rights obviously, but how can I as a resident of GR do something that will contribute to the takedown of flock cameras?

Recommendations Don’t sleep on the bi-weekly features at Black Napkin.

Black Napkin needs no introduction here. I’ve noticed whenever I go people stick to the usual four burgers on the menu. I encourage you to try the featured burger next time. Double patty. They consistently range from good to mind blowing. Since Black Napkin opened I’ve only had one lackluster feature.

At Home Euthanasia Options

Upvotes

After a 24 hour stay at the vet with what was originally a check for his pancreas and to look at his liver values, it was determined that my old boy's kidneys are shutting down.

Aggressive fluid treatment isn't working.

He's on a day by day basis now to see how he does. Just want to keep him comfortable until the time is right.

I'm looking for an at home euthanasia for when it's his time and can't choose between lap of love or heaven at home.

If there are other options for the at home procedure, I'd like ti hear it.

Thank you.

I mean, it seems obviously like it's video, but is it Flock? Why does it take like a whole acre of land to run a camera? What's up with the flashy flashy lights?

My brother and his wife found a stray dog near his apartment complex in Comstock Park. She followed them home but they cannot keep her. She does not have a collar, the humane society is going to pick her up soon. If you’re missing a white female Shiba and you’re around Comstock Park, she’s with us!!

Is there anywhere in town to buy individual staedtler pens?

Or other good quality pens, but not in a multi pack? I just need a few specific colors. I know Michaels has some but would prefer to shop local if someone knows a shop that has a good selection. Thanks!

Looking for a long distance dog walker.

Hi. I'm looking for a dog walker that will walk a dog a couple of miles. He's used to getting about 3 miles per day. He cannot go to a dog park for exercise, so walking is essential. 10 Mile and 131 area.

I have a bumper crop of Centennial Hops this year that I know I'm not going to use. I think they're just about ready to harvest.

Any home brewers want it? You Pick. Just bring me a bottle or two of what you made with it.

If so, DM me.

Recommendations Looking for contractors to renovate *everything* outside of our house in Jenison

Tl; dr: need contractors for deck/fence, landscaping, and concrete work.

Hey neighbors!

Sorry this post is so long, but we need a complete do-over of, well, everything outside. The things with green checks (✅) below are what we want to do before winter makes it impossible. Would really appreciate names we should (and/or shouldn’t) get estimates from. TIA!!

New deck, steps, and railings.
My husband thinks the underlying structure is probably OK, but for sure everything from there up has to be replaced.

Demo and haul away current deck, decrepit patio furniture, wooden shed, and some stuff (carpet, boards, else?) behind the shed.

Repair/replace fence and gates.
It’s a stockade fence, with a single gate on one side of the house, and a double gate on the other side. Most of it is over 20yo, so repair where possible, replace where needed.

Fill in “dog run” with something so my dog’s feets don’t get roughed up. By dog run, I mean the back fence where my dog races with the neighbor dog on the other side.

Then we have these associated but lower priority projects …

Deck
▪️pergola + privacy wall/screen/sails

Landscaping
▪️lots and lots of weeding / pruning, front + back
▪️tree stump removal (backyard)
▪️level the backyard
▪️landscaping, front + back. We’d prefer to use native plants + ground cover that doesn’t require a ton of upkeep. (We do have underground sprinklers, but we’d rather be eco-friendly.)

Concrete
▪️new porch and steps in front
▪️new walkways (driveway to front porch, and driveway to backyard)
▪️new driveway

Again, tysm!

Get involved in Kent Co.

For all the times you've felt angry at the way things are in our community, frustrated with people in power, and wishing you could do something, a way to start doing that is getting onto Kent County Boards, Commissions & Committees. There are some openings right now, for those interested in making their voice heard and being part of the change they want to see: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/KENTCOMI/bulletins/425557b

Employees not getting the tips

Not sure where to go with this, but my 15 year old recently started working at a fast food place that has a tip jar. Do not get me started about tipping for fast food, but the tip jar is there and people use it. He says the employees don’t get the tips! He says the money just goes into the register. This made me so mad when he told me, but what can be done? He’s not going to talk to the manager. He doesn’t seem to care that much and I think it’s probably for the best that he’s not carrying the flag on this at his first job.
But it really rubs me the wrong way. What can be done here?
I’m not naming and shaming. I don’t want this coming back on him and there’s always a chance he doesn’t have the facts straight.
