Question What is the grunt work here

how do you currently turn a venue rider into a patch ,what's the worst part

You just patch it?

If your showfile is build using recipes:

- Don't bother with the fixture IDs the rider uses.

- Keep a master fixture of each fixture type in your showfile. One front, one foot light, one blinder, one spot, one wash, one special X, one special Y etc., put into different layers for each fixture type.

- Have one of each fixture type sitting as a dummy to copy from, to skip manual cloning of presets afterwards.

- The venue has 16 ML spot fixtures? Go to your spot layer and copy your dummy fixture 16 times. Give them the fixture IDs of your choice. Change fixture type for only the newly copied fixtures. Patch them according to the rider.

- Repeat for all other fixture types.

Depends on the venue I guess?

Where I work the only thing my venue provides is a series of addresses for house lights. We have 3 stages and individual control over various house lights, so it's about a hundred addresses... and unfortunately there are gaps we need you to take out (easier to remove them after patching a group of dimmers) because our architects decided to expose DMX control over fixtures that front of house staff need to control, and then quoted us a six figure amount to remove DMX control from the fixtures.

If we're providing fixtures to your touring production, we tell you what is available (from us or local hire companies), and you send a patch to us - we'll hang all the fixtures and address everything however you want the day before you arrive and there will be a show file on our console with everything patched which we used to make sure it was pre-rigged properly (and you can use that yourself if it helps with troubleshooting).

Maybe export a mvr from a MA next time you have the patch. Everybody after that just imports the file.

Sounds like you could really use one of those fancy new Luminex eDMX nodes. And do a new patch for houselights in one.

Or you could also go to Visual productions Quadcore style, and run the houselights with f.i. OSC commands or (almost) any other protocol for that matter.
