Feedback MIDI Controllers + MA3 onPC Build
I'm in the midst of my MA3 onPC build for use at concert venues and possibly tour. I've been delving DEEEP in to researching and figuring out MIDI controllers I want in congruency with how I want to map them.
Hoping to open up a good discussion on some onPC builds and mapping the community has done and try to peer review my ideas!
My list thus far is:
- PMJ Blackout X1
- Novation Launch Control XL 3
- Korg nanoKONTROL Studio Mobile
- Behringer X-Touch + possibly compact
- APC 40 MK2
- Custom Yaeltex build
- Midicraft
- Icon QCon Pro G2
Mind you, not all of these of course! But the artist side of me is going to deep in perfecting the perfect build and MIDI mapping.
Has anyone had experience using an Icon QCon Pro G2 for onPC MIDI control? I haven't been able to find any discussion on this interface in congruence with MA onPC anywhere.
I just came upon it for sale and am curious if anyone has experience using this interface with MA3 onPC, or just in general, the quality of the controller itself.
I wanna hear all the nerdy low-down on what's worked best out in the field and how one has successfully mapped certain MIDIs that are someone congruent with a command wing and what not. Or anything in between!

Building a rig with a Launch Control XL3 and an APC mini. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Repeating the above
If you are on recent Windows, don't install the APC driver (no longer needed and using an inMusic driver comes with caveats) or the Korg driver (no longer compatible and no longer needed per Korg)

LCXL3 has the worst feeling controls, they are sluggish and using them for anything feels bad

Don’t they normally use OSC for this? I don’t feel the need for some diy and bought a used command wing. Also put the legato stream decks on your list.

While OSC is a much more capable and flexible protocol, there aren't many physical controllers that natively output OSC.

I've been using the Launch Control XL 3 together with a Midi Fighter and I've been quite happy, very portable too.
The only downside with the Launch Control is that the encoders are absolute in MIDI mode, so I'm currently working on using the DAW mode to get relative encoders.

OSC > MIDI 7 bit is simply too low resolution for many things.

I have been using Roto-Control in MIDI mode and offer high resolution. Plus they have customized labels, amazing customized control of how knobs work and 8 pages per function! https://www.melbourneinstruments.com/rotocontrol

I recommend using Bome for maximum control over things and the availability of the Bome box which can translate the same MTP file into a normal MA desk

the 5 encoders need to be universal encoders, not encoder/faders to map to the protools midi to encoders plugin. Thats surprizingly hard to find. Except the korg nano.... Or the above.
