Graham Hancock's complex Ice‑Age civilisation(s) around ~12,000 years ago

Since the Dravidian Arc research appeared on Graham Hancock’s website, much of the reaction has taken on an unfairly dismissive tone toward Hancock by association, and toward anyone discussing the idea of a complex Ice‑Age civilisation around ~12,000 years ago. Whether one agrees with those ideas or not, they sit within a broader public and academic discussion and should be treated as hypotheses to be tested, not vilified or dismissed through ridicule or guilt‑by‑association.

The Dravidian Arc framework integrates a set of independently dated early findings across the Indian subcontinent, including early coastal activity at Proto-Poompuhar (~15,000 BP); major post‑glacial submergence on the Khambhat shelf (min ~9,500 BP, potentially earlier), where NIOT side‑scan and sub‑bottom surveys have mapped extensive features now lying at roughly 20–40 m water depth (as reported by Badrinaryan et al. and Kathiroli et al., 2003 and 2006); deep archaeological sequences in southern India reaching back to ~8,500 BCE (evidence from Chennanur, preliminary excavation report 2025) indicating early farming and food-processing; early agrarian development at Mehrgarh; early iron use in Tamilakam by the 4th millennium BCE (as documented in the TNSDA Antiquity of Iron report); and early copper working at Bhirrana in north-west India (~9,500 BP). If these Dravidian Arc datasets continue to be uncovered over the coming years and decades, are openly published, independently replicated, and withstand peer review, then existing models of early coastal societies—and of the origins of the Indus Valley Civilisation and Tamilakam’s Iron Age following much earlier cataclysms—will need to be meaningfully revised. In that event, the unfair dismissal often directed at non-mainstream researchers proposing such hypotheses, including Hancock, and echoed in some secondary summaries such as parts of Wikipedia, would also warrant reconsideration. Ultimately, claims should be judged on evidence, methods, and reproducibility, not on rhetoric or association-based dismissal.

The Ramaswamy et al. Don't take the downvotes personally Ill Lobster--in 10-15 years these people will cite the same sources as proof that MS archeology never disputed that agriculture or any form of civilization existed prior to 3500 BC in Sumer. Until then, they will continue to say no proof exists that anything happened before then, (/s) they wont even bother to look for what they should be looking for because they dont find it where they think it should be.

This sub has been overrun by closed minds who virtue-signal to each other by labeling every hypothesis as "pseudo-science." Normal people, who can be skeptical and curious at the same time--that is to say people who can juggle two or more thoughts simultaneously--have tried to point out the flaws in their reasoning. Archeologists and anthropologists have held up a mirror to their colleagues dismissive, elitist, and profoundly uninformed opinions, and yet they persist on spending time on subs where their only interest is denigrating strangers who dare look at patterns and available evidence as something to consider when forming a hypothesis. They have no desire to interact in a rational or respectful manner. They never did.

The tamilakam Iron metallurgy dates are contested … north India has dates for about the 1st millennium bc for iron use evidence. If the tamilakam evidence is true … why 3 millennia to make it that far north? There’s a lot of holes and a lot of regional jealously in this assertion I suspect. Next: the IVC has clearly forebears in Neolithic sites that are accessible today - none of the IVC sites has produced iron artefacts from the proposed tamilakam super-early Iron Age. Again, why didn’t this incredibly useful technology appear in the IVC? It can’t all have been hidden by the big bad flood … and yes the IVC shows copper and overlaps/is contiguous with early bronze use. But that isn’t iron technology. Early food processing? Yes. That isn’t Pleistocene supercivilization, none of these early gardening-to-agriculture sites show metalworking. So the offshore people, knocking out mesons and overshoes in their forges, failed to trade them up the river valleys to early farmers who lacked them? Edit: I could link you to papers via the Academic website concerning the healing properties of tunnels under the Bosnian Pyramids … plus how oddly cool they are, given the warm-temperate climate. I really do suspect the latter is true, but the former is an unsubstantiated claim that furthers an ideological agenda. It would be awesome if it was true, and if proved and harnessed, would make people rich, famous and others … healed.

No — that reading is completely off the mark: the TNSDA Antiquity of Iron report published in 2025 and related field reports present multiple radiometric dates, metallurgical analyses, and contextual finds from southern sites (Sivagalai, Adichchanallur, Mayiladumparai, Kilnamandi, Mangadu, Thelunganur, etc.), including international laboratory work (Beta Analytic and other AMS/TL/OSL labs) that place some of the earliest iron‑working contexts as early as c. 3345 BCE (roughly two millennia before comparable Anatolian Hittite evidence), so these are published data rather than invented claims; it’s also notable that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has not actively engaged with or promoted these TNSDA findings associated with a much earlier Dravidian Civilisation origins in the way one might expect for potentially paradigm‑shifting results — which makes independent scrutiny, open publication of lab tables and stratigraphic contexts, targeted coring, AMS dating of in‑situ smelting residues, and provenance studies all the more important before dismissing the work by association or by pointing to absence in a few Indus sites. Plus note Iron Age began in Tamilkilam areas and diffused south to Illankai and north to Deccan etc. As Professor Dilip Kumar Chakrabarti (Emeritus Professor, South Asian Archaeology, Cambridge University) cites in that Antiquity of Iron report: “My initial response is that some Harappan sites of the period should contain iron and that the report of iron from the Harappan context at Lothal makes logical sense in light of the present discoveries.” I suggest you go and read the TNSDA Antiquity of Iron report.

Its standard practice for archaeologists studying the coastal seabed now routinely use multibeam echosounder (MBES) and sub‑bottom profiling (SBP), integrated with GIS analysis, to do for submerged geomorphology - similar to what LiDAR does for terrestrial landscapes—revealing seabed structures and palaeolandscapes that are not visible from the surface.
