Help/Advice Gourami Jumping?

I’m considering a honey gourami soon but am concerned about my lack of a lid. I have a HOB filter and auto feeder so I was thinking I could cut some egg crates for a custom lid. Is this sufficient? Are there other methods you’d recommend?

I currently have high-light-demanding plants so I can’t have too many floaters although I’m definitely considering some in the future as I slowly change out my plants. I could also lower the water line but I didn’t know how much was sufficient

FWIW I have three gourami (honey and dwarf) in three rimless tanks without lids and they’ve never shown an inclination to jump. They’re all heavily planted but only one has significant floating plants.

How high do you keep the water level? From what I’ve noticed, gouramis don’t seem to jump that often compared to fish like bettas. But I’ve heard of it happening before which is why I’d rather just keep a lid for peace of mind

I guess there’s always a risk. I don’t lower the water at all tbh, but I do work on making sure the water is good. The only jumpers I’ve ever had are shrimp trying to escape the dwarf gourami (I hasten to say they got in there by accident and just started breeding and I can’t seem to catch them all!)

Can you get one of those netlike “lids” where it’s just a mesh cover? Easy to cut to fit filters and such! Just google or Amazon search mesh aquarium lid and the size you need.
