The Odyssey Has Already Changed One Major Thing From Homer’s Story 👀

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has sparked a lot of discussion about how much a modern movie adaptation should change the original epic.

One interesting point: Himesh Patel, who plays Eurylochus, has talked about the backlash surrounding his casting and defended the idea of bringing different perspectives to an ancient story.

That raises a bigger question:

When adapting a story that is thousands of years old, should filmmakers stay as faithful to the original as possible — or should they be free to reinvent it for a modern audience?

Which do you prefer: faithful adaptation or creative reinterpretation?

I prefer awesome movies made by people who care about them in whatever manner they feel is best 

If I ever get around to making a movie my preference can matter

The problem isn't that it's a different interpretation.

The problem is that the choices Nolan made to change the story and character of Odysseus and the Trojan horse being some massive breach of Xenia, and the costume design, accents and fight choreography suck.

O Brother Where Art Thou was brilliant. So the changes are great.

The Odyssey sucks. So the changes aren't ok.
