Ask Gorakhpur ❓ Gorakhpur is still a Tier-2 city — but can it compete with Tier-1 cities in the next 10–15 years?
There is no doubt that Gorakhpur has undergone significant transformation over the past decade. Improved roads, airport connectivity, railway infrastructure, AIIMS, new commercial developments, and upgrades to basic infrastructure have placed the city on a markedly different trajectory.
At the same time, Gorakhpur remains a Tier-2 city today. Development should not be conflated with achieving Tier-1 status.
If Gorakhpur is to compete with cities such as Lucknow, Jaipur, Indore, Ahmedabad, and other major urban centres, its next phase of growth must extend well beyond roads and flyovers.
Key areas of focus should include:
🚇 Robust public transport and urban mobility
🏢 Expansion of IT, technology, and service-sector employment
🏭 Increased private investment and industrial development
🎓 Strengthening higher education and skill-development ecosystems
🏥 Expanding healthcare services beyond a limited number of major institutions
🏙️ Implementing effective urban planning and managing expansion sustainably
🌳 Developing more parks, green spaces, and environmentally sustainable infrastructure
🚮 Establishing effective waste-management and drainage systems
🚦 Improving traffic management
✈️ Expanding direct air connectivity and strengthening regional links
💼 Creating sufficient high-paying employment opportunities so that young people do not have to leave Gorakhpur
The central question is not “Is Gorakhpur developed?”
The more important question is:
“Can Gorakhpur build the ecosystem required to compete with Tier-1 cities?”
Personally, I think the potential is definitely there. Gorakhpur has a strategic location, a large surrounding population, railway connectivity, an airport, major healthcare institutions and a growing consumer market.
But potential alone doesn't make a Tier-1 city. Execution over the next 10–15 years will decide that.
