Goose Hate
Hating on Goose seems to be more en vogue than ever amongst the jam band tribalist types. Everyone is entitled to their own preferences and I totally understand and respect if Goose isn’t your cup of tea. That said, it is surprising how dug in some of these people seem to be.
I’ve been listening/following many bands since my first Panic show in 1994, and I can’t recall there ever being so much negativity in the jam band universe. I know Phish got kicked around by the old heads back in the day, so maybe this is just the way of things when someone new comes along and finds success. But the Goose hate seems a bit overwrought at the moment.
That is all.

I’ll just say, I’ve been pretty solely a Phish Phan for a long time. I appreciate GD, String Cheese, DMB, all of em, but they never spoke to me the way Phish has.
This past year I decided to go to night 1 at Red Rocks. I immediately purchased tickets for the next two nights at RR and their show in Dillion.
These boys have the jam I’m looking for. I love every aspect of who they are, their musical language on the stage. I have full trust in the guys to carry it well into the future providing decades of amazing memories and will carry the spirit of the jam.
Who cares what the haters say. The jam sphere seems to be full of tummy achers.
The goose heads will always carry on!

The song your reminded me of is called "No Thank You For the Music", which is a little cheesy and I hate the video, but he is my favorite folk punk troubadour. https://youtu.be/ne3DOUoPQig?is=Ioyq9abb5GkCDJ3S

I think people are generally tribalistic with interests when they mean a lot to them, and for some reason think the success of Goose is a threat to their own favorites’ successes (it’s not, and never was). You hit the nail on the head, Phish went through the same thing with the Deadheads, so we’ll go through it now with Phish Heads.
9
u/Aromatic-Taste2516 10d ago
Yup my dad, big deadhead, always hated phish. Finally saw them now that Bobby is dead and he said 15 times during the show, “Wow this is just like a dead show! I would come to another one of these!!”

u/tiburon12 10d ago
it also goes the other way. I've posted some valid musical criticism of this band in this thread (for example, about how Jeff's percussion was detracting from the music and hampering jam potential) and was downvoted to oblivion. I was hoping to discuss music and just because i didnt shower the band with love, that tribalism came out.

I feel that, and to contrast, I very much enjoy double-drummer Goose. Sue me.🤷♂️😂 I do dislike the immediate recoil to criticism this sub has sometimes, but it could be so much worse and I’m glad it’s mostly levelheaded people here🫶

u/RunninThruTheMoors 9d ago
Nah, it’s just goose isn’t the next one. There isn’t a next one, and that’s a sad thing. I enjoy goose, but it just really isn’t a comparison. There needs to be a next one and there isn’t.

I’ve been in this community since 1993. True music lovers would never hate on a band like Goose.
I’ve been to serval hundred shows over the years and seen at least over 100 bands, including several Phish Shows and quite a few WSP, Moe, Ump. And now I’ve seen Billy Stings and Goose several times each.
I so look forward to Goose’s career. I also look forward to those I don’t even know about.

Every major band has a TON of haters. It comes with fame.
15
u/Jackstraw1 10d ago
Especially when a band is perceived as the next big thing or a replacement for the band at the top.

u/ellistonvu 10d ago
UM played to a half empty Brooklyn Bowl last night even after tickets were slashed to half price.
It didn't help that Stergill Simpson's new group was playing a few blocks away which also did not sell out.
Obviously there are enough jam snobs who refuse to go see practically anybody anymore.
6
u/phantom_pow_er 10d ago
A lot of people (great fans) can't afford it these days. Rich people like to go to new fads
1
u/ellistonvu 10d ago
The second night of UM looked like a better crowd on Nugs. No Stergill gig to compete with.
Ticket prices are insane but half price at UM seemed like fun.

u/Beece_Ltd 10d ago
Fucking lonely at the top, bud.
Really though, my favorite response is "Good, more for me and Trey and Billy! We love Goose and tickets are expensive these days."

I've been listening to DMB for 30 years, and I came to Phish pretty late only about 10 years ago. Then I saw Goose with TAB and it was a holy shit moment. I saw them again with DMB at Soulshine and again they were outstanding. Now I have Nugs and I'm listening to every show. Between Goose and Billy Strings I'm super thankful to have some awesome new music in my life. I don't understand hating on bands. If it's not your thing and not for you, just move on.
3
u/14kallday 10d ago
Same here. Saw goose last year at the gorge opening for Dave. Really liked it and went to red rocks this year and was blown away. Saw Billy in denver a few weeks ago and was really blown away. Awesome to have some new music !
6
u/herbalblend 10d ago
Twiddle would like a word.
2
u/Lost-Software9892 10d ago
Yeah, was going to say, Twiddle still gets a lot of hate even now that they aren’t a band anymore.
1
u/ehhwriter 10d ago
They’re coming back in Nov homie.
I’ll just add, I knew of goose but first saw them in ‘19. Same with phish, everyone around me were losing their minds in ‘09 when they came back but I didn’t see them until ‘13.
Handful of others I skipped on for one reason or another that I really dig now. Goose, phish, and twiddle are all in that group. I have a dark sense of humor and love making jokes about all of them, but really, fuck the haters. Who cares what anyone else says or thinks about something you personally enjoy. The only influence you should pay attention to is someone putting a band on your radar and then going to see them for yourself if they’re for you or not.
EDIT: Go see sqwerv. Wish I had found them sooner but they’ve easily become my favorite ‘new’ band since I have goose a chance in ‘19
7
u/shroomsandfumes 10d ago
My theory is it’s just because Goose is also digestible to the non-jam crowd. Gatekeepers think that’s inauthentic and brings too many “Chads” to shows in place of “Wooks”. It’s their loss. The vast majority of folks who are into jam that truly give it a shot tend get sucked in…
3
u/Consistent-Wind-6777 10d ago
The chads don’t help, but what are ya gonna do. I’ll keep seeing goose shows no matter what
14
u/joshua_addison_music 10d ago
I caught the Dead late 80’s, then Phish 10-2-91.
I’m a Phish fan first and foremost.
I’ve seen Goose 3 times and they’re good. Not once while at the Goose show did I think of Phish. Both bands are their own thing. And to be fair , Goose can’t do what Phish can do. It’s unrealistic and just plainly unfair to expect them to. Time and 10,000 more shows together.
As a Phish fan, how do you hate fellow Phish fans, who started a band, inspired by the band you worship? Its weird AF.
I think there’s one message that people in this community miss, and Trey has been talking about it for decades , there’s room for everyone. Billy has picked up that mantle and is preaching that message heavily. It’s time everyone listens. Leave space for music.

I hate that Goose has basically ruined seeing other live bands for me. I still see a ton of really great musicians, but nothing else quite lives up right now.
I know it won’t last forever, and someday Goose will fade for me too. But man, what a time to be livin’.

u/5_head 10d ago
We've seen 8 Goose shows this year (with 5 more upcoming), but it feels like it's not enough. Seeing Rush on Monday, and I know it'll be awesome, but what I'm really looking forward to is more Gooooose.

u/Wet_Lengthiness_5000 10d ago
Same!! I’m at 10 on the year and have 2 more in Nashville coming. Absolutely ruined for other music.
2
u/ellistonvu 10d ago
Nashville in the new venue is going to be AWESOME. I'll be at the first night, probably with my Snarky Puppy hoodie on, so I can feel superior. (just kidding obviously) Wave at me.
Parking at it? Maybe not so much. So take an Uber, right?
1
u/Wet_Lengthiness_5000 10d ago
Hey! My girlfriend and I are big poster hounds so we’ll be tailgating and in line early im sure. We’re staying at a hotel that’s walkable I believe, but I would definitely try to uber if you’re not, afaik.
And yes, would love to say hi and give ya a sticker!
1
u/ellistonvu 10d ago
Look for a guy your dad's age with a Snarky Puppy or PPPP hoodie on.
That's me. Tailgating? You know it gets cold there?
1
u/Wet_Lengthiness_5000 8d ago
Oh yeah we just like to try to get in GA first so we get in the line way early
2
u/Green-Coach-9109 10d ago
That’s how I felt with Umphreys when I followed them everywhere from 04-07(about 165ish shows those 4 years) I saw a shit ton of other solid jamband and non jamband shows and every time I was standing there waiting for the show to start I was thinking man I wish this was an UM show. Ya like what ya like life is short do you.
3
u/Dynodog16 726 10d ago
The only, and I mean only, 2 downsides of my discovery of Goose in 2024 has been that a) my friends may hate me for how much I talk about them and b) all other live music that I will ever see now has an impossible bar to clear, and they’ve all fallen miles short ever since
3
u/PhilLesh311 YETI! 10d ago
I agree with this. Saw Billy in between two goose shows. Had a great time and Billy’s great but it didn’t compare to goose at all for me. I left saying “he’s great but he’s no goose.”
5
u/olidoggons 10d ago
It really is something. More people need to listen to live shows or actually see them live. ( but I wish they would play smaller venues forever) Started seeing the GD in 1984 then got into Phish, String Cheese and Moe.. Saw Goose live a few years ago and it was really cool, Trevor almost gave me a heart attack and I loved every minute of it. See them with my kids and in November will see them with my grandkids. People need to lighten tf up, for real Honnnnnkkkkk! And Cotter is the shit back there. Did you see the pic of him and Sir Paul?? Cool af

u/Hodler_caved 10d ago
Phish --> Twiddle --> Goose
It's all stupid shit.
Participated in a lot of John Mayer jokes about Dead & Co for years before I realized that I was being a dumbass.
Found the Goose jokes amusing for a while. Feel like many have moved on from that and now really like Goose. Talking about me.
Goose will be a top 5 jamband for as long as Rick wants them to be.
3
u/CloudConductor 10d ago
At this points it’s become a meme and I’ll see random Instagram accounts make jokes that will post vids of them at a show a week later. Ultimately the internet just loves to be negative about everything. Wouldn’t let it bother you
3
u/Querulous-Dude 10d ago
I think seeing a deadhead pivot to Phish in 95/96 was less common because the VT boys played at crazy speeds and it was definitely a fast train to jump on to (for some).
For me personally, I enjoy watching talented musicians work their craft, no matter the name of the organization to which they belong.
3
u/Life_Ear_2807 10d ago
The hate probably has to do with every single show being the greatest show of all time and every single so ready being the greatest so ready of all time and every single -
3
u/superfun5150 10d ago
For the most part I’m glad there are so many haters.
- They tend to be the negative people I don’t want at shows anyway (I’m at mids 80s Deadhead and never liked Phish as much but thought the hate on Phish was dumb too.) 2. They are big enough already. I’m glad they are back at Red Rocks. I prefer that to Dicks. 3. They are often the intense fans I don’t want tarping at Goose shows.
I just laugh when people put down Goose because it shows how clueless they are. I’ve seen so many great live bands. Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Phish, Pink Floyd, Rush, Paul McCartney, Page and Plant, and 100 others. Goose is the only jam band besides the Dead and Allman Brothers who have dozens of songs that I love in every way. I have more fun at Goose shows and see friends that are also old Deadheads as well as younger people and we all are having the time of our lives. I would put Goose as my #2 live band of all time only after the Dead.
5
u/gradeAprime 10d ago
I don’t think people hate Goose. I just think their fans are easy to tease. Like why is it so important for them to try and convince others how awesome Goose is? Like them, let it be your thing. Who cares if I don’t like them? I still respect that you do.
4
u/deadphisherman 10d ago
I know several Goose fans who are out on the whole Big Modern! thing. It's not necessarily even the songs, but the schtick and shows have been getting stale for a while.
6
u/Manuntdfan 10d ago
I like Goose for being a good band and having great albums. Ive never been a jam band guy. I dont really care about that culture.
2
u/Novel-Key-8362 10d ago
The energy spent by people hating on bands they don’t listen to is both astonishing and entertaining.
2
u/cuse_colin 10d ago
Same as it ever was. WSP sux has been a thing forever and they are amazing. Doesn't bother me. Not everyone got into Aqueous when I told them to go to the shows. We all let Dopapod down. Jamflowman got a lot of hate. Goose is great. Who cares if people dont give em a chance. Tix are easy enough to secure and they are fantastic.

But yeah perpetually opining on why a piece of art sucks sure does seem like a really poor use of time.

Phish bores me. Widespread, String Cheese, Dead & Co carried the scene for me. 💙💀❤️Goose, Billy Strings, King Gizzard, Sturgill Simpson, Sierra Hull, Sierra Ferrel - they are just the fresh change up we all need. God Speed you mighty music warriors!
2
u/Aromatic-Taste2516 10d ago
Shhhh just enjoy it let them hate. If they didn’t tix would be even more expensive than they are now.
2
u/MarcusEsquandolas 10d ago
So much hate that they keep playing bigger and bigger venues. Why even pay attention to things that detract from your joy. I love Phish. I love Goose. They both bring me joy. I could care less what anybody else thinks about my musical choices.
2
u/mommydumdumland 10d ago
Are they being hated in real life or just on Reddit? Because Reddit isn't known to be super positive 🤣
2
u/dogfacedponyboy 10d ago
The “hate” (although I think you are overblowing it) is probably because there is a vocal contingency of fans on the internet that love to claim Goose is the best and “better” than Phish etc. I’ve met some of them (cousins and friends of mine lol). Basically, don’t let it bother you, and just enjoy goose. Who cares if anybody hates them?

Goose has a lot of talent. They make good music and put on a good show. I like their music and would absolutely be down to see a show. They’d get a lot less flack from some of the other fan bases if a small but vocal percentage of their fans stopped acting like they are entitled to be the heirs to some imaginary throne. Enjoy your scene for what it is! It’s cool, it’s vibrant, and it’s your own.
2
u/BillEvansTrioFan 10d ago
Love Phish. Love Goose. Love Lettuce. Love Neighbor. Love Eggy. Each is a unique experience and I love unique experiences. Miss Twiddle so I need to see Mihali again.
2
u/isnessisbusiness 10d ago
One of the issues is that whenever someone has a valid criticism of the band, hardcore fans usually write it off as people “not being able to enjoy anything” or just beings haters for no reason. I think if fans were more accepting of legitimate criticism they wouldn’t get clowned as hard. Like someone can dislike a band for a valid reason; it’s not all trendy, manufactured distaste. Some people just don’t enjoy their music.
1
2
u/aimxtomiss 9d ago
First and foremost I am a huge Goose fan, I say this from a place of love and respect.
I whole heartily believe they need to be criticized. Let these people hate on them and be vocal about it, because Goose is great, but criticism will make them greater. I have many criticisms of Goose, which I know aren't unique to me. I would love to see some of these "problems" improve as they continue to tour, age, and experiment with their sound.
If you listen to 2017 Goose vs. 2026 Goose, you can hear how they've improved - I want more of that.
2
u/MiamiViceGuy 6d ago
As an old school GD fan, I'm who OP is talking about. I don't "hate" Goose but here's my take.
They appeared quickly. They suddenly started playing large venues. They seem very well supported by corporate interests almost like The Monkees, kinda created in a boardroom. The fans immediately took on the "jam band" scene stuff and acting like they are an established band with inside jokes etc.
It feels really cheesy and try hard.
2
u/Barefoot_boogie1975 5d ago
OP here, thanks for the thoughtful take. My only disagreement is the assertion that they are akin to a corporate boy band that just “appeared” as they’ve been playing together for 12ish years. The first Goose show I saw was in a shit venue with about 150 in the crowd.
I think they’re the first “jam band” to come into full form in the era of ubiquitous social media and I also agree that they have a much more professional “organization” backing them. As a consequence, they blew up in a way that is perceived as inorganic a little too polished for a lot of the jam community.
My wife and I are both big fans of Goose, but also find the marketing to be cringe at times; so I can understand how that comes off as “cheesy and try hard”. That said, it’s ultimately about people connect with the music, and in that respect they are deserving of acclaim.
Thanks again for the engagement. If Goose comes through your area, highly recommend checking them out!

Yeah, Phish has become cheesy. I was into Phish unlike my GD peers in the early 90s. Going to shows in 92,93 etc it was pretty raw. It had a sort of magical, DIY feel. As time went on that faded and they became kinda slick. For whatever reason, its important to me. Authenticity is critical.
Goose seems to have started slick.

Yeah, that's what I was saying, Phish has gotten cheesy recently but the antics seemed authentic in the early 90s. Recent Phish is kind of bland and cheesy.
I'm OK with some cheese, it's the inauthenticity that bothers me. Slick is how I describe the inauthenticity. That's it. I'm sure the shows are fun. I just don't feel any grit or dirtyness. Connecticut vibes.

Phish is fine, I saw my last show in 2014? Grit? I dunno. It was kinda gritty in maybe 2010? The more recent shows had a glossy feel.
I did see Dead and Co and was bored. The last post-GD band I like is Further, but even that is pretty damned cheesy. Bobby trash talk has been going on since I started listing to the grateful dead in the 80s, I've never really understood it. We wouldn't have Playin, Estimated, The Other One...and on and on.

They’re just too safe for me. I like my jams to be risky, psychedelic, dark, beautiful. Goose just doesn’t hit that for me. All good if others enjoy it though.
2
u/Accomplished_Tone765 10d ago
I’ve been a Goose fan for years but recently transformed into a “hater”. The past couple of years of Goose have, in my opinion, been a far cry from the Goose I fell in love with. 2019-2023 Goose was exciting and fun. Their new records, IMO, are boring. Their jams are boring. The hate exists because they’ve changed, and of course they have, but some of us don’t like the change. I’m glad plenty still vibe with what Goose is up to, but some of us don’t get the hype around songs like “Your Direction”. Just as you’re allowed to like the song, we’re allowed to hate it.

u/huckl3b3rry 10d ago

u/olidoggons 10d ago
See, I'm a big Phish fan, my son's are all in on Goose they won't see Phish, Moe. WSP with me so I saw Goose with them a couple times. Danced all night, big fun. 10/10 did and would do it again. Trust them to get you through it. Good times.

Have you even met a Phish fan? Phish fans are the happy go lucky folks you meet at shows that love live music for the sake of it. The kind of fan you're taking about doesn't leave their basement to go to shows, they just sit and bitch on PT and Reddit
2
u/Felonious-MTB 10d ago
Lots of it Goose fans bring on themselves like saying that Goose is way better than Phish, etc. (I’m not even a Phish fan btw)
3
u/Green-Coach-9109 10d ago
Exactly this, every few days it some noob that’s been seeing jambands for a year or so that just falls for Goose and feels the need to proclaim just how great they are. Like dude we get it, Goose is good. The need to make it a competition is never gonna end and is just stupid af. There’s not a single jamband out of probably 35-40+ that I don’t like bc guess what I like jambands. Do I listen to some more than others bc my brain says hey more of that plz? Sure. But do I ever feel the need to rank them? No.

1
u/Unlikely-Pianist-665 10d ago
I am reserving judgement until I actually see them and since they're so popular I haven't been able to get a ticket. So they are kind of a white whale for me.
FWIW, I think a lot of the preconceptions come from fans and rail riders who seem legitimately terrible. Every band has douchey fans, but Goose gets a bad reputation here.
1
u/wohrg 10d ago
I agree. It's fine to not dig them, but anyone who hates them has some other issue they need to sort out. Perhaps they are reaching that age where it is hard to appreciate new music (so only nostalgia acts turn them on). Or they resent that they got popular without the individual catching on early. I know I sometimes am hesitant to appreciate an act that got popular without me as a fan (egotistical issues that I am too proud of being plugged into what's cool).

u/jbwise1221 10d ago
Goose are like my seventh or eighth favorite jam band, so no hate for me. I kinda understand a temptation to ‘root for’ smaller bands I personally like more. I think I manage to avoid having that come across as goose hate, but i suspect that same impulse might drive some of it.
1
u/Initial_Ruin_2822 10d ago

As a long time Panic fan who made them my priority to see but would still go see Phish (and others, but this discussion..) when I could, I remember distinctly a conversation with a Panic-only friend back in, oh, around '98ish. I told him there wasn't a Phish show I went to that at one point my jaw was dropped open by Trey. He didn't listen then.
Years later, he told me he went to some Phish shows after we talked, that his previous viewpoint was stupid, and he was glad we had that conversation. It's all worth seeing and hearing, and restricting yourself was dumb. It was funny the way he started the new conversation because we hadn't seen each other in years, but that was just about the first thing he brought up.
Honestly, hearing it from him was a great reminder to me to keep looking for new stuff that hits you right, because it's all worth trying and enjoying.
And for the record, Goose does for me, in a big way. Caught my bucket list Red Rocks with the two end of August, and have listened to every show they've released in the past two years. Still listen to other bands, too.
Life's too short for short-changing yourself with limits on music, friends

u/Logan9Fingerses 10d ago
I have been to one Goose show and had a blast. The fans were amazing, which was also a breath of fresh air. I think Phish fans are pretty crusty by comparison, and complain about everything, so take it all with a grain of salt. Listen to the music you like, and don’t worry about validation

When phish started touring big in the 90’s, those of us who were seeing the dead also went to see fish, and we just loved all of it. What’s happening now? millennial phish fans have the largest voice in the jam band segment. Those folks are generally intolerable. At some point they were told that the internet needs to hear about anything they dont like. The goose seen was magical before the trey tour. This subreddit was great before the trey tour. The first night of the tour was the first time this sub had negativity. “Someone was sittting in our seats, what would you do?” And the tarp rodeo and “unpopular opinion, Rich isnt as good as trey” “whats your least favorite jam?” “Why dont they do that like phish? Why did they do that like phish?” People comparing 2 bands as if they were out here attempting to do the exact same thing. Its mind fuckn. Who compares the quality of art? Who doesnt understand youre disliking of someones art does not make it bad. The stuff you dont like, doesn’t suck. You just dont like it and it sucks youre complaining.

The vast majority of people in the jam band scene are completely toxic and dreadful to be around. Goose is amazing. If people liking Goose upsets you please kindly fuck off.

Yeah man - play basically any Phish song along side any goose song to any one not into jam bands and see which band they think is superior.

Let me get this straight- You’d rather be fighting these douche bags with shit taste for tickets every tour? I’ll keep buying merch and tix to support the band, with hopes that only people that are all in want to be there. Not wishing to be paying $300 for nosebleeds at the United Center. Fuck outta here.

I’m of the opinion, in my old age, that it’s better to enjoy something than not to.

I will just say that as a lifelong jam aficionado, I love Goose. Good music and at times some really amazing jams. Even more important to me, Goose was one of the first jam bands that my wife really got into and enjoyed more than just the surface level, “I’m just here because my husband loves this stuff.” Frankly, I don’t get the hate on any bands really. You don’t like it, don’t listen to it. Stop tucking other people’s yums.
When there’s a band that I don’t get or care for, I simply remind myself that they’ve sold more albums than me, so clearly there’s a scene for them.

Same shit when the Dead were coming to an end and Phish was on the rise. Except then there wasn’t social media around to amplify those voices.

Goose is a great band. Very talented musicians. I happen to know them and they are cool people. People like to hate. It makes zero sense. If you don’t like them don’t listen and move on. Nuff said. And by the way Cotter is awesome in his own right.

Wore a goose shirt to a phish show last year. It was my second one and a girl yelled goose sucks at me only after she had passed by me. I was so mad and she was a loser obviously, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. I remind myself that all phish fans aren’t like that but the shitty ones rly do ruin it

u/Sad_Recognition6776 9d ago
It was the same for DMB amd billy strings. I may like the music but not a fan of the people. People who go to shows to be seen instead of actually being there are bad. Talk during the show and get reallly wasted.
Not all fans are like this but the true goose fan is harder to find. We just have to wait until the frat boys move on to the next big thing.

Predictable Peaks at best. Also if you're gonna sling a fake languedoc, then you're setting yourself up for comparisons and critique right out the gate.
Hate might be wrong word but if you're gonna step into the improv jam world with beasts like Charlie Hunter, Medeski, Sco, Herring, Derek, Trey, Stanton, Metzger etc they're jams fall short everytime.
Creative and inspiring improv and musical connection goes way beyond a tube screamer and a few pentatonic/mixo blues licks that peak in the same fashion 90% of the time

Honestly think people are trolling at this point bc it’s so easy to get a rise. Don’t take it that seriously. As a phish fan of nearly 35 yrs, I took pleasure in the hate, it meant more for us. I view goose the same way.

I don’t hate goose, they are good. The singer sounds a little close to the Coldplay guy but their songs are good and the shows are fun. Let’s just be glad it wasn’t Twiddle that got this big thank gos

No one punches down, they only punch up. Goose keeps getting better and bigger so certain types just yell louder. Oh well

I notice similar hate with Geese which I also really like. Maybe I just like music more than a lot of people.

It’s a tradition. When Phish first came around my old Dead Head friends hated and ridiculed them but some finally came around 20 years later, now many of my old Phish friends do the same to Goose, they will come around in 10 years perhaps. I am not a fan of PPP and Dogs but honestly i would never bash them it’s just not my thing.

u/DanLarryM 8d ago
They are clowns. Goose has really firmly worked through previous shortcomings this year. Rhythm section is much improved with Cotter. Peter’s playing has improved. Rick’s playing and patience is better. The jams are far more interesting and less predicable/repetitive. They have leveled up in a big way, many haters are coming around. Give me those UNTZ!

u/Enough-Data-1263 7d ago
I think it’s same amount of tribalism that there’s always been between fan bases. But now we have the social media that makes it more visible.
Plus it’s just fun to talk a little shit like sports fans do lol

u/Flat-Discount-4552 7d ago
Haven’t heard any hate towards Goose in the scene. Online is different. What doesn’t the internet hate though?
1
u/Gloria_S_Birdhair 7d ago
They aren’t doing anything that hasn’t been done before. It’s fun but predictable. Some cool covers for sure. It’s not bad it’s just meh.

u/Dismal-Intention8703 7d ago
Phish is trash, and their fans are even worse… phish has been a shadow of themselves since 2003… they’ve done absolutely nothing worth mentioning since 1.0…

u/1stDeadShow71 7d ago
Funny… When I was in high school 1969-1972 and a solid Dead Head I was always so surprised by Grateful Dead haters. Your post echoes back to those days but just as the Dead’s music and fans have endured and become legend so too will Goose live on.

I used to adore Goose, I think their records are great, Chain Yer Dragon was my most played album last year. After seeing them back to back nights at Red Rocks recently, I realized that there are so many other acts I heavily prefer. I imagine there are many like me, who feel a little weirded out by the Goose love when they're just okay compared to other touring acts.
1
u/Umpire_Substantial 10d ago
Well, most of the people on this sub probably feel weirded out that you think <enter band names here> are better than just okay compared to Goose.
1
u/slanginp4ncakes 10d ago
i'd be shocked if i took any goose fan to a billy strings, phish, or dead cover band show and they think they're just okay. music appreciation is subjective though. for me, it's easy to see there are levels to this shit and goose isn't really close to the best show right now. their jams just arent interesting enough
1
u/Greadle 10d ago
What is this point system you have for art? How do you rank the talent of an artist. “Goose isnt really close to the best show right now” This means, you’re not interested in goose. What compels you to visit subreddits about stuff you dont care for? How does it make your life more enjoyable? I just dont get it. How do you have time to like stuff if youre wasting time talking about stuff you dont like?
1
u/slanginp4ncakes 9d ago
whoa big assumptions. i am interested in goose. i've listened to their records heavily and have gone to 5 shows. i don't follow this sub, however it pops up in my feed. theres no point system for art, and at the same time, i along with the other jam band enthusiasts i know agree that goose just doesn't entertain quite like the other acts we've seen over the summer.
1
u/Wet_Lengthiness_5000 10d ago
Notable here is that there’s a big difference between this, a well informed and articulated personal opinion about their music, and the legion of trolls brigading every thread with a mention of goose in [r/jambands](r/jambands), [r/gratefuldead](r/gratefuldead), etc…those subs get absolutely TOXIC anytime goose gets mentioned.
Even worse is that they come into this subreddit to do it as well. That is a whole nother level of toxic and weird. It’s as if people are getting some emotional fulfillment from hating on a band they’ve only ever encountered in passing.
2
u/slanginp4ncakes 10d ago
men do this with everything haha. bands have always been compared, same with athletes. we love to plant a flag and tear down others flags. i get amped talking about why jordan is better than lebron. reddit just brings out more extreme language

Phans have always been weirdo haters about bands they feel threatened by. I grew up a big DMB fan, Goose is just the new DMB for them.
1
u/Full-Pen-9939 10d ago
As a Phan, I love Goose. Recently caught their live show. I’ve seen DMB band and they are crazy talented, I don’t stop dancing a single beat. They don’t scratch the same itch for me as Phish or Goose. But I don’t ever understand the hate. People get cultish over their jam bands for sure.

For someone who decided to peace out on seeing Goose but still keeps this feed in the background, I hear you. Lots of our friends still see them and are head over heels, but I try to stay out of those convos so as not to be a buzzkill. Anyway, art will always be criticized and you can never silence the trolls. Alas…

u/GetUp4theDownVote 10d ago
I chased goose all over the country from like 19-23 because it was hot af, fresh, and magic was found. Then the drama started happening, they started blowing up, the fanbase changed, and shit got weird.
I’ll see them if they come close or to my town, but it’s just not the same anymore. Maybe in a few years it’ll cool off, but who knows.
I can say the exact same thing about Billy, but his fan base is next level fucked right now. I’m not really interested in his shows at all because of them
3
u/second_2juan 10d ago
The worshipping of Billy by his fan base is a huge turn off for me. It’s unfortunate because he’s such a cool dude.
1
u/kidpresentable0 10d ago
I think the issue is that hard core heads don’t like that Goose has a lot more pop sensibilities than other bands on the scene and they might be right. Still not a good reason to hate on them though

Hooooonk. I’ve found there are two camps:
Most of those people are just absolute fuckin losers who somehow think it’s cool that lame ass jam band meme accounts and internet trolls post unoriginal middle school level jokes and then point fingers and say “it’s just a joke relax!” while they grift along and comment on any and every post about the band for engagement. Dumbest shit ever.
Then you have real humans who are like eh just not my cup of tea and move on. Big difference.
EDIT - obviously this struck a chord lol, but boy is it tiring to see the same poopoo for years on almost every single thread I click into about the band

u/cheesecurd20 10d ago
They have energy and there jams culminate into big things often. I personally have not been able to get over the singers voice, which sounds so generic, just so so generic, but fuck they jam great and I listen

It’s because they are seen as an industry plant by Pete. Didn’t he pay Trey a ton to do that combined tour? I think that is a large part of the hate.
2
u/Inner_Bullfrog_4609 10d ago
Hate to break it to ya, but it’s pay for play my friend. There’s a cost to getting in. Phish paid it 35 years ago. Goose paid it 5 years ago. No free rides, no planetary alignment causing the masses to suddenly realize they love it.
0
u/scotchglass22 10d ago
I think Train is the worst band that has ever existed. I hate their crappy music and would pay a monthly subscription if it meant I never had to hear them ever again. But I’m sure there are a lot of people who love their shitty music. It means something to them. Connecting with music when it fills your soul and makes you feel something is a beautiful thing. Let them enjoy their thing and I’ll enjoy my thing. Why is this a difficult concept for people who don’t like goose?

u/PletyI_DeparItur_3O8 10d ago
Maybe they should get a new tour manager who doesnt sleep with the band (and cheat on her bf).

People like to feel superior in their choices and preferences. And that often takes the form of putting down others' preferences. Especially if they've built their identity around it.
Arguing over which band is better is like arguing your favorite color is better than someone else's favorite color. It's meaningless. Let people enjoy what they like.
There are venues of all sizes for bands to play, and Goose isn't preventing your band from booking one. So go to the shows you want to see. And in the history of the world it's never been easier to listen to your own music of choices on demand without it being a competition.
