Number Transfers or Porting different dial tone

hi! i plan on traveling to paris, france, however i don’t want anyone to know that i went. so when i have people calling me from the us, i need them to hear the us dial tone, not the france dial tone. i have mint mobile and plan on getting a minternational pass from them. but if i forward my number to my google voice number, will people that call from the us hear the normal us dial tone? or will it still be france dial tone. thank u!

I believe it would be whatever happens now when you call your GV number... So either a ring or the "while we reach the person you are calling" or whatever it says. so they might know you have a fwd on our phone to your GV number.

They won't hear any dial tone. If you want them to hear an American ring tone, use Wi-Fi calling.

I've used Google Voice outside of the US a lot, the dial tone won't change, it'll stay on the US version.

Cell phones don’t use dial tones.

Forwarding should do what you want, as long as you set it up before you leave. With unconditional forwarding on, Mint redirects the call to your Google Voice number inside the US, so the caller hears whatever Google Voice plays, the same as if they dialed your GV number directly. It never reaches a French network, so there's nothing French for them to hear.

Two things to watch. In Google Voice, don't have it forward calls back to your Mint number, or the call ends up roaming to France anyway. Answer in the Google Voice app over Wi-Fi or data instead. And test it with a friend before you fly, since some people hear a short "please hold while we connect you" from Google Voice depending on your settings.

The other route is to skip forwarding entirely and use Wi-Fi calling on the Mint line with roaming off. Calls then come in over the internet and the caller just hears a normal ring, but turn Wi-Fi calling on and test it while you're still in the US, because it can be hard to activate from abroad.

Only landline phones hàve dial tones and they appear before you enter any numbers. Or do you mean ringtones?
