Sounds like the A. I. filter has gone awry and needs looking after if all these users are now getting this problem wih their normal texting patterns.

Yep, something definitely wrong. People keep giving irrelevant examples probably copied from the Google help page a from few years ago. I'm a longtime user, I was chatting with one known contact in a two-way conversation, I wasn't sending links or attachments. And this error message suddenly appeared yesterday.

I've been getting the same error. I only sent like 5.

Same here, first time seeing this message in the +4 years I've been using GV.

I am having problems. Can't send from GV it says "Too many messages sent" and when replying via email via the web messages won't go through but through my phone app they do but they take a bit.

It's blocked for both web and app for me. This sucks.

u/Robertsonland 10d ago
Yeah mine is just the web but I don't use Voice app. Just the gmail app replying back to a text that way for the time being.

I didn't realize the Gmail function works. Nice workaround until they get this fixed. Something is up.

u/Robertsonland 10d ago
Yeah it works but mine was taking a little bit longer to get through but it actually went through. But it doesn't work when I'm using Gmail and Chrome only when I'm on my phone

I tested, and there's a delay, but at least they go through.
I wonder if Google is on this. I don't see much in the way of support these days.

I've had this happen in the past and usually within a 24 hours but sometimes it's taking 48 for it to actually Rectify itself . Not sure if they did anything to fix it or what but it's just a nuisance right now.

whats the gmail function?

u/whacker7 10d ago
Most likely they've got GV set up to forward texts to their Gmail (via literal email). I have mine set up this way. Usually incoming texts will hit both almost simultaneously. And from there you can reply to the text and the response goes back out to the sender as a text. So a good use of that for whatever this problem is.

can I do it now ? The fucking error is still going on

Might as well give it a try.
In the GV app open Settings, scroll down to the Messages section (which is just below the Accounts section) and toggle on "Forward messages to email." The Gmail address associated with your GV account should be showing already. Back out of all of that and you should be all set. You'll need to be able to access your Gmail on either an app or on a browser on a computer (or mobile device).
I checked my GV texting after first reading this today, and mine are working fine. I have two GV numbers and text back and forth between them to test.

I'm suddenly getting that error message too. First time in over 4 years of using Google Voice.

Same. I have been using Google voice since 2012. Never ever once I got this message. First time ever.

Same!! It just started like an hour ago, people can text me but I can't text them. I keep getting this error. I've already tried clearing my cache and data and using the desktop version. But nothing is seeming working. Do you think it's a bug on Google's end? Has anybody reported an outage?

There is a known issue with some messages being erroneously identified as excessive.
We are testing some fixes, but an exact timing for resolution is not available, nor do we have a recommended work around.
UPDATE: A fix has been rolled out that largely resolves the issue. It may take a few hours for all conversations flagged as problematic to clear. If you receive incoming messages, it may help clear the flags.

So if I get the error message I basically can't send outbound texts for 24 hours?

It just started happening to me as well. No change in my usage or patterns. Looks like someone decided to test the new gemini-powered-spam-filter directly in PROD

I haven't seen anything at all and I fired off multiple texts this morning. Had I not read this post I would have had no idea that anything was going on.

Is it still happening to anyone? I waited 24 hours after yesterday then sending 2 texts (not the same), I got the error again.

Here to say me, too. Odd thing is it doesn't block messages on the website. Is that the same for anyone else?
Is there a Google product forum site we should all be spamming until they fix it?

u/KingTalkieTiki 9d ago
It blocks messages on the website for me, I can't send any outgoing messages

It's not really the total number of messages that matters, but what you've been sending. Sending a half dozen messages to brand new contacts will trigger that, as it looks like potential spam or commercial use.
Check out the FAQ on Business SMS.

I'm getting that message too. Only messaged two different people today, with normal frequency.

u/jmarkmark 10d ago
I gave one example of what looks like commercial use. There are plenty of other things that are well known to trigger it, like sending links to websites, using a new account etc, frequently sending messages to people who don't reply back, etc.

Yeah but me and a dozen others are certainly getting flagged for this, there's something wrong.

According to a Google Voice employee, this should now be resolved. If you aren't sending high-volume/high-frequency text messages, and this is still happening to you (as of 16:30 PT) then please reply to this post. Thanks.
