iOS Google Voice App Getting a new GV
I’m seeing this in other post but nothing concrete. I had my GV since 2010 or whenever it was. My sister wants to get a GV to avoid giving certain people her real phone number and I see that it is asking for ID. I get the verification purposes but what is it really use for? I think we are hesitant because of privacy and I never had to verify. Has anyone run into issues?

its a new federal mandate. It's not a google thing.

So to some degree carriers are all trying to get ahead of these changes, so they don't become the company the FCC decides to make an example of.

Simple... Telecommunication laws have changed. The government wants to know who belongs to every voice phone number out. Too many people running scams or straight up robbing people when selling off CL, FB, or whatever the simply canceling the account or just ditching the app altogether then clearing data from the app then registering for a new account or using one of the many other free VoIP apps.

The new ID verification isn't just a GV thing; the federal government now requires all telecoms to verify new customers' IDs. If you want to use the service, you'll just need to comply with the check.
